Heskie Mullins, Jr. - 1924-2008
Heskie Rowland Mullins, Jr., 84, husband of Jessie Mullins of Westwood passed away June 2, 2008, following a brief illness.
Heskie was born March 31, 1924, in Pine Grove, Ohio, to the late Heskie Sr. and Louise Mae Holbrook Mullins. He proudly served his country during World War II in the U.S. Army and was a retired Steelworker at Armco Steel. He was a member and former deacon of Westwood Christian Church.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a stepdaughter, Pamela Reaper; a brother, Virgil Lee Mullins; and a sister, Chloe Bernadine Jackson.
He is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Jessie Hamburg Mullins; a brother, James William Mullins of Nicholasville; a sister, Ida Maxine Meade of Ashland; several nieces and nephews; and a host of extended family and friends.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Westwood Christian Church by Ministers Dean Jackson and Tim Ingram. Burial will be in Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens in Ashland. Military rites will be conducted by Kenova American Legion Post 93.
Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. today, June 4, 2008, at Caniff Funeral Home in Westwood and an hour before services Thursday at the church.

Betty Brown - 1934-2008
Betty Jo Harris Brown, 73, of Westwood, passed away Monday, June 2, 2008, in King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland.
She was born Oct. 12, 1934, in Boyd County, to the late Robert Earl and Frankie Alberta Blevins Harris. Betty was a long-standing, faithful member of Faith Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Jay Brown; and a brother, James Kenneth Harris.
Survivors include a son, Brady Brown and his wife, Tracey, of South Point, Ohio; two daughters, Billie Jo Broughton and Susie Hunt, both of Westwood; two grandchildren, Kailey Brown and Beth Ann Brown; and a brother, Herb Harris of Ashville, Ohio.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Caniff Funeral Home in Westwood by Pastor Brian Steele. Burial will be in Ashland Cemetery.
Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. today and an hour before services Thursday at the funeral home.

Irene C. Earls - 1923-2008
Irene C. Earls, 85, of Ashland, died Sunday at her home following a short illness.
She was born Jan. 5, 1923, in Carter County, a daughter of the late Sylvester and Dora Belle Forrest McDowell. Irene was of the Baptist faith.
She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Robert Moore, and her second husband, Ernest Earls; a great-grandchild; seven brothers; and three sisters.
Survivors include two sons, Greg Earls and Randy McDowell, both of Ashland; six daughters, Sandy Yates, Sharon Hall, Diane Kitchen and Debbie Maddix, all of Ashland, Dee Layne of Grayson and Tery Abbott of Russell; 16 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Preston Family Funeral Home in Ashland by Pastor Mable Johnson, with music by Brother Ron May. Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park in Ashland.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Jackie Deloris Rice - 1930-2008
Jackie Deloris Rice, 77, of Ashland, died Thursday in Woodland Oaks Health Care Facility in Ashland.
She was born Aug. 20, 1930, in Ashland.
Her husband, Leonard Rice, survives.
A memorial service will be at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Moore Street Tabernacle, 2608 Moore St., Ashland.

Michael Eugene Johnson, 39, of Ashland, died Saturday in Fort Pierce, Fla.

Fred D. Maddix Jr. - 1927-2008
Fred D. “Buddy-Screek” Maddix Jr., 80, of Ashland, died Monday in Matthews, N.C.
He was born Nov. 8, 1927, in Ashland.
His wife, Fern Barker Maddis, preceded him in death.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Miller Funeral Home in Ashland. Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park in Ashland.

Mary Magdalene Castle, 56, of Lowmansville, died Monday in Highlands Regional Medical Center in Prestonsburg.
She was born Aug. 27, 1951, on Cave Fork.
Her husband, Joe Castle, survives.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Walnut Grove Freewill Baptist Church. Burial will be in Nord Castle Cemetery in Lowmansville.

Clarence Edmand King, 78, of Staffordsville, died Monday at his residence.
He was born Aug. 24, 1929, in Johnson County.
His wife, Emma Jean Lemaster King, survives.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Cold Springs United Baptist Church. Burial will be in the family cemetery on Blanton Branch in Staffordsville.

He was born July 5, 1911, in Carter County.
His wife, Lorena Plank Pendland, preceded him in death.
