Irene C. Earls - 1923 - 2008

Irene C. Earls, 85, of Ashland, died Sunday at her home following a short illness.

She was born Jan. 5, 1923, in Carter County, a daughter of the late Sylvester and Dora Belle Forrest McDowell. Irene was of the Baptist faith.

She also was preceded in death by her first husband, Robert Moore, and second husband, Ernest Earls; a great-grandchild; seven brothers; and three sisters.

Survivors include two sons, Greg Earls and Randy McDowell, both of Ashland; six sisters, Sandy Yates, Sharon Hall, Diane Kitchen and Debbie Maddix, all of Ashland, Dee Layne of Grayson and Tery Abbott of Russell; 16 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Preston Family Funeral Home in Ashland by Pastor Mable Johnson, with music by Brother Ron May. Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park in Ashland.

Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Gene Daniel Jr. - 1948-2008

Gene S. “Butch” Daniel Jr., 60, of Ashland, died Saturday, May 31, 2008, in the VA Medical center in Huntington, W.Va.

He was born Feb. 1, 1948, in Ashland, the son of Rosa Rae Cox Brooks of Ashland and the late Gene S. Daniel Sr. He was a U.S. Army veteran and a former member of the National Guard.

He was also preceded in death by a son, Vincent Daniel, and his stepfather, Carl Brooks.

Survivors, in addition to his mother, include three sons, Randall Daniel of Vero Beach, Fla., Joshua B. Daniel of Sherman, Texas, and Robert P. Daniel of New Hampshire; a brother, Terry R. Daniel and his wife, Brenda, of Worthington; a sister, Sally Virgin and her husband, Russ, of Sebastian, Fla., an aunt, Gwen Estep of Ashland; an uncle, Willie F. Cox of Fort Pierce, Fla.; a special friend, Ruth Robinette of Ashland; four nephews; and a niece.

The funeral will be 1:30 p.m. today at Miller Funeral Home in Ashland by Pastor Kenneth Vaughn. Burial will be in Bellefonte Memorial Gardens in Flatwoods, with military graveside rites by Kenova American Legion Post 93.

Friends may call after 11:30 a.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Beech Street Christian Church Building Fund, 1672 Beech St., Ashland, KY 41101.



Bess Griffith - 1908-2008

Bess Griffith, 99, of Greenup died Monday at Oakmont Manor in Flatwoods. She was born July 13, 1908, in Elliott County, the daughter of the late Linzie Elwood and Nancy Creech Pennington.

Mrs. Griffith attended Morehead State Teachers’ College and taught for several years in the Greenup County School District. She was later employed in the Greenup County Tax Commissioner’s Office. She loved gardening and enjoyed her daily long walks well into her senior years. She was an avid Cincinnati Reds and Kentucky Wildcats basketball fan.

Bess was preceded in death by her husband, Orville Griffith; and three sisters, Virgie Sturgill, Mae Porter Fellows and Norma Jean Darnell.

She is survived by two sisters, Ruby Burkhardt of Albuquerque, N.M., and Marie Hardymon (Artty) of Greenup, and numerous nieces and nephews.

A private memorial service will be at a later date.

There will be no visitation.

Reed Funeral Home in Greenup is in charge of arrangements.

James Adkins - 1965-2008

James Willard “Jim” Adkins, 43, of South Shore, died Sunday in Scioto County, Ohio.

He was born March 21, 1965, in Neubrucke, Germany, the son of James Willard Adkins of Corbin and Joyce Tackett Fortner of Greenup. He was the husband of Sherry L. Fine Adkins, who survives. He was a materials handler for Progress Rail in Raceland and a retired first sergeant with the U.S. Army. He was a member of Disabled American Veterans.

Survivors, in addition to his parents and wife, include two daughters, Jennifer Lynne Brown (Stephen) of Vine Grove and Kimberly Michelle Adkins (Matt Jarrell) of South Shore; two brothers, Josh Fortner and Daniel Fortner, both of Greenup; four sisters, Lisa Nichols (Kevin) of Greenup, Mary Thompson of Columbus, Stephanie Niswonger and Chantal Spears (Ralph), both of Lloyd; father-in-law Michael Fine of Rush; mother-in-law Myrna Fine of Rush; and two brothers-in-law, David Fine (Cristy) of Minnesota and Larry Fine of Florida.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Wright’s Funeral Home in Greenup by Brothers Kenny Martin and Roger Bonzo. Burial will be in Siloam Cemetery in South Shore, with military graveside rites by South Shore American Legion and a detachment from Fort Knox.

Friends may call after 6 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Hazel Webb - 1923-2008

Hazel Clark Webb of Flatwoods passed away Sunday, June 1, 2008, inCommunity Hospice Care Center in Ashland.

She was born Aug. 21, 1923, in Glen Ferris, W.Va., the daughter of the late Harry and Celia Bibbee Clark Sr.

She was a homemaker and was known for her homemade candies. She was a member of Bridges Christian Church (Russell Christian Church) Builders Memorial Sunday school class and the Sonshiners Senior Ministry.

She was also preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Julian Webb; brothers Edward, Charles, Lloyd and Arthur Ray Clark; and sisters Catherine Clark, Lucille Norford, Dorthea Kinser, Carolyn Brenda, Mildred Propps and Elizabeth Martin.

Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law Richard and Sandy Webb of Boyd County and John and Vicky Webb of Raceland; daughters and sons-in-law Ruthie Webb and Jim Plummer of Flatwoods and Kay and Mike Gambardella of Suffolk, Va.; brothers Harry Clark Jr. and Franklin Clark, both of Kanawha Falls, W.Va., and sisters Imogene Jones of Boonville, N.C., and Sue Kirby of Kanawha Falls; grandchildren Richard A. Webb, Travis, Matt and Lance Kokas, Eric and Jessica Gambardella, Natalie and Jenna Webb; and a great-granddaughter, Audrey Jo Webb.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Carman Funeral Home in Flatwoods by the Rev. Mark McKinney. Burial will be in Bellefonte Memorial Gardens in Flatwoods.

Larry Riddle

Larry Gene Riddle, 65, of Ceredo, W.Va., husband of Bonnie Lou Wells Riddle, passed away on Thursday, May 29, 2008.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a retired maintenance worker at King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his mother, Louise Michaels of Clarkston, Mich., three daughters, Sherry Boling of Westmoreland, W.Va., Wendy (Trent) Griffith of Hickory, N.C., and Tonya (Kevin) Zimmerman of Huntington, W.Va.; five grandchildren, Aaron, Ethan, Austin, Evan and Payton; and five brothers and sisters, Tammy (John) Linder and Gary (Kathy) Norman of Clarkson, Mich., Kirk and Terry Norman of Travis City, Mich., and Sue (Keith) Mueller of Michigan.

A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Ceredo-Kenova Funeral Home.

Mike Johnson, 36, of Westwood died Sunday in Fort Pierce, Fla.

Tammy Nickels - 1957-2008

Tammy Sue Stockham Nickels, 50, of South Shore, died Sunday.

She was born Dec. 14, 1957.

Her husband, Rickey Nickels, survives.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Morton Funeral Home in South Shore. Burial will be in Siloam Cemetery in South Shore.

Alene Blankenship - 1913-2008

Alene Blankenship Engle, 95, of Jeffersonville, formerly of Morehead, died Sunday.

She was born Jan. 10, 1913.

Her husband, Robert Boyd Engle, preceded her in death.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals in Morehead. Burial will be in Callihan-Lewis Cemetery in Morgan County.

Ilko Cybriwsky, 91, of Paintsville, died Friday at his residence.

He was born Aug. 19, 1916, in Pidsosniv, Ukraine.

His wife, Olba Woloshyn, preceded him in death.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Michaels Catholic Church. Burial will be in Cave Hill Cemetery in Louisville.

Donald Lee Bunch, 55, of Fort Gay, W.Va., died Sunday at his residence.

He was born Jan. 31, 1953, in Washington Court House, Ohio.

His wife, Brenda Spaulding Bunch, survives.

The funeral will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Wilson Funeral Home in Louisa. Burial will be in Webb Cemetery in Webb, W.Va.
