Bette A. Long (1911-2008)
Bette A. Long, 97, of Ashland, died May 29, 2008, in Woodland Oaks Health Care Facility.
Mrs. Long was born Jan. 18, 1911, in Elliott County, a daughter of the late Edward and Pearl Rose Cox.
Her husband, J.B. Long, preceded her in death.
She was a member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Ashland.
Surviving is a sister, Marie Shaw of Richmond.
As per her request, there will be no funeral service. Her body has been donated for research to the Marshall University Medical School in Huntington, W.Va.

Willie Smith Sr. (1927-2008)
Willie Smith, 81, husband of Mary Smith of Flatwoods, passed away Wednesday, May 28, 2008, in King’s Daughters Medical Center.
Willie was born April 20, 1927, in Boyd County, one of 14 children born to the late Berry Sr. and Mattie Williams Smith. He was retired from the West Processing Division of Armco Steel and was a Christian.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Ronnie Smith; a stepson, Richard Hall; seven brothers, Arthur Charlie Smith, Tennessee Smith, Donald Smith, Henry Lee Smith, Harrison Smith, Cortney Smith and George Smith; and three sisters, Myrtle Wright, Hattie Mae Smith and Betty Lou Smith.
He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Mary Menshouse Smith of Flatwoods; three sons, Willie Smith Jr. and his wife, Gwen, Carl Smith and his wife, Nancy, and Anthony Smith and his wife, Juanita, all of Flatwoods; a daughter, Barbara Dixon and her husband, Charles Leroy, of Flatwoods; two brothers, Berry Smith Jr. of Grayson and Paul Smith of Jacksonville, Fla.; a sister, Polly Ann Smith of Wilmington, N.C.; 12 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 31, 2008, at Caniff Funeral Home in Westwood by the Rev. Greg Wells. Burial will be in Bellefonte Memorial Gardens in Flatwoods.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today and an hour before services Saturday at the funeral home.
Viola Clark (1923-2008)
Viola Clark, 85, of Flatwoods, Ky., died May 28, 2008, in King’s Daughters Medical Center.
Mrs. Clark was born Jan. 28, 1923, in Flatwoods, a daughter of the late John A. and Minerva Kirk Short. In addition, she was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Robert Edward Clark; brothers Marvin Dallas Short and Ernie Lee Short and sisters Lulie Sexton and Christine Leadingham.
She was a homemaker and a member of 39th Street Pentecostal Church of Christ in Ashland, Ky. She was a Sunday school teacher of the primary class for many years and loved doing crafts.
Surviving are a daughter, Lorain Darby (Forest) of Russell, Ky.; two grandchildren, Randal (and Lisa) Darby of Russell and Marcia (and Dave) Wilks of Catlettsburg, Ky.; five great-grandchildren, Mason and Sidney Darby, and Chase, Hannah and Andrew Wilks; a brother, Winston Short of Grayson, Ky.; and sisters Mary Carte and Louise Salyers, both of Flatwoods, Elfreda Hensley of Argillite, Ky., and Frances Adams of Flatwoods. She loved all her family.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 1 at Carman Funeral Home in Flatwoods by the Rev. Cline McCallister. Burial will be in White Oak Cemetery in Russell, Ky.

Alice Annette Morgan (1918-2008)
Alice Annette Morgan, 89, of Grayson, Ky., went to be with her Lord on Wednesday, May 28, 2008, in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland, Ky.
She was born June 26, 1918, in Russell, Ky., a daughter of the late William Mannie and Jeanetta Nichols Morgan.
She was a retired professor at Kentucky Christian University and a member of First Church of Christ in Grayson.
Miss Morgan graduated from Christian Normal Institute in 1941 and earned her master’s degree at Marshall University. She started teaching English, American literature and biology at Kentucky Christian College in 1941 and continued to teach there for more than 50 years. She also served as a registrar for Kentucky Christian College for several years and continued to be an ambassador for the university.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four sisters, Grace Nolan, Faye Williams, Nellie Bates and Edith Jacqueline Bates, and two brothers, William P. Morgan and Charles R. Morgan.
Her survivors include nine nieces, Grace Morgan, Barbara Morgan, Linda Morgan, Donna Sue Williams, Alice Karen Bates, Patty Hartman, Sandra Clemens, Mary Bates and Jennifer Dale Baker; 10 nephews, Thomas Morgan, Timothy Morgan, Fred R. Williams, Michael Bates, Steven Bates, Paul Bates, Jerry Bates, Mark Bates, Jimbo Bates and Charles Eric Morgan; and several great-nieces and great-nephews and great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.
Funeral services for Miss Morgan will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 3, 2008, at First Church of Christ in Grayson by Tim Nischan and John Dundon. Burial will be in Bellefonte Memorial Gardens.
Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Monday, June 2 at Malone Funeral Home in Grayson and after 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church.
Her nephews will serve as pallbearers.

Mary Madeline Coleman DeHart (1917-2008)
Mrs. Mary Madeline Coleman DeHart, 90, of Hydreco Village in Olive Hill, Ky., passed away Thursday morning, May 29, 2008, in King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland, Ky.
Mrs. DeHart was born July 17, 1917, in Carter County, Ky., to the late Guy and Rebecca Edison Coleman.
Mary was a homemaker, devoted mother, grandmother, sister and friend to all who knew her. She retired from the Carter County School District after working there 14 years. She was a member of Olive Hill Wesleyan Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 40 years, Jay DeHart; a sister, Opal Hensley; brothers Harry Coleman, Charlie Coleman, Lloyd Coleman, Guy Coleman Jr. and Ercel Coleman.
She is survived by a daughter, Rebecca Stewart of Olive Hill, Ky.; two sisters, Lillian Lewis of Oregon and Betty Cameron of Olive Hill; two granddaughters, Shelly Steiner of Grayson, Ky., and Kelly Bennett of Ripley, Ohio; and three great-granddaughters, Laura Beth Steiner, Shayla Henderson and Karea Henderson. She also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, other family members, neighbors and friends who will sadly mourn her passing.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 31, 2008, at Globe Funeral Chapel in Olive Hill by Brother Leonard Gollihue and Brother Allen Wells. Burial will be in DeHart Cemetery on Square Lick Road, Olive Hill.
Friends may call after 6 p.m. today and until time of services Saturday at the funeral home.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
Robert A. Toothman (1921-2008)
Robert A. Toothman, 86, of Huntington, died Thursday, May 29, 2008, in Cabell Huntington Hospital.
He was born Dec. 20, 1921, in Fairmont, W.Va., a son of the late Charles and Nellie King Toothman. He was a World War II veteran who served in the U.S. Navy and continued in the Naval Reserves after the war, retiring as a captain. He retired also as a CPA from S S Logan. He was a member of Fifth Avenue Baptist Church and Huntington Lodge 53, AF&AM, and 32nd degree Huntington Scottish Rite Bodies.
He was also preceded in death by two wives, Carolyn E. Toothman and Dolores Toothman, and a brother.
He is survived by two sons, C. Robert Toothman of North Palm Beach, Fla., and R. Michael Toothman and his wife, Patricia Morris, of Herndon, Va.; three grandchildren, Wendy Carolyn Toothman of North Palm Beach, Brian Michael Toothman of Raleigh, N.C., and Richard Patrick Toothman of Reston, Va.; and five great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, May 31, 2008, at Klingel-Carpenter Mortuary in Huntington by the Rev. Hubert Harvey. Interment will be in Woodmere Memorial Park.
Expressions of sympathy may be made to Fifth Avenue Baptist Church.

His wife, Alma M. Ramey, died in 2001.

Martha Susan “Missy” Maggard, 54, died Saturday in Smyrna, Ga.
She was born in Fort Valley, Ga.

A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Oakland Cemetery in Carter County.
