Claude C. Hazelett

Claude C. Hazelett, M.D., 71, died Tuesday, May 26, 2009, in Louisville, Ky.

He was a family practice physician and a graduate of UK and the Bowman Gray School of Medicine at Wake Forest University. He began his Louisville practice in 1968 after three years of military service in the Army. He was a member of Buechel Park Baptist Church, American Legion Highland Post 201, Preston Masonic Lodge 281, the Scottish Rite and Kosair Shrine.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Tina Caudill Hazelett.

He is survived by his wife, Thomissa; a daughter, Claudia Kay (Kenny); and grandchildren Derek Anthony and Alexa Jordan Kay.

The funeral will be at 9 a.m. today at Buechel Park Baptist Church, 2403 Hikes Lane, Louisville, Ky. Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park in Ashland, Ky.

Fern Creek Funeral Home, 5406 Bardstown Road, Louisville, Ky., is in charge of arrangements.

Memorial gifts may be made to his church or Hosparus.



Dorothy K. Wilson (1929-2009)

Dorothy K. Wilson, 79, of Ashland, passed away Thursday, May 21, 2009, in Woodland Oaks Health Care Facility in Ashland.

Dorothy was born Sept. 2, 1929, in Ashland, a daughter of the late Robert Louis and Mary D. Hills Kahne.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, James Wilson, and is survived by her first husband, Robert Doll.

Dorothy was a graduate of Ashland High School and the University of Kentucky with a degree in communications. She and her first husband, Robert, had a radio morning talk show in Frankfort, Ky., for many years.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Robert “Bob” and Ronny Doll of San Diego, Calif.; a daughter, Dee Anne Bryll and her husband, Ed Cohen, of Cincinnati, Ohio; a brother, Louis Kahne of Ashland; and a sister and brother-in-law, Roberta Dee and Fletcher T. Wolfe of Wake Forest, N.C. Dorothy also leaves behind several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 30, 2009, at Ashland Cemetery Mausoleum Chapel by Dr. Lee Gussler.

Visitation will be from 10:30 to 11 a.m. at the mausoleum chapel.

Arrangements are under the direction of Steen Funeral Home-Central Avenue Chapel.

Jerry Benton “J.B.” Dowdy (1933-2009)

Jerry Benton “J.B.” Dowdy, 76, of Flatwoods, Ky., formerly of Cannonsburg, Ky., died Wednesday afternoon, May 27, 2009, at his residence.

He was born March 21, 1933, in Enterprise, Ky., a son of the late John Kenneth and Ethel Ellen Barker Dowdy.

In addition, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Nancy Hale Dowdy, and brothers Paul, Ralph and Harold Dowdy.

He was retired from CSX with 41 years of service and was a U.S. Navy veteran. He was a member of First Church of God in Ashland and the 101 Club at the University of Kentucky. He was an avid Kentucky sports fan and a former member of the Masonic lodge in Proctorville, Ohio.

Surviving are his wife, Joyce Boggs Gartin Dowdy of Flatwoods; two sons, Jerry Scott “Bucky” Dowdy and wife Pauline of Pueblo, Colo., and Joel Randall “Randy” Dowdy of Ashland, Ky.; two stepsons, Michael G. Gartin and wife Joan of Lexington, Ky., and Schiem Lee Gartin of Ashland; a daughter, Giselle “Gigi” Love and husband Denver of Proctorville, Ohio; a sister, Ernestine Whitt and husband Wayne of Ashland; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, May 30, 2009, at Steen Funeral Home-13th Street Chapel in Ashland by Pastor Steve Harris. Burial will be in Ashland Cemetery.

Friends may call after 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Brian Zachary Meenach, 15, of South Shore, died Thursday from injuries he received in an automobile accident on Interstate 64 in Carter County.

He was born June 16, 1993.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at First Christian Church in South Shore. Burial will be in Bennett’s Chapel Cemetery.

Clara Porter, 72, of Grayson, died Wednesday at her residence.

She was the wife of Burl Porter.

A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Grayson Memorial Burial Park.

James David Hayslett, 44, of Lexington, died Tuesday in Fayette County.

He was born July 20, 1964, in Johnson County.

His wife, Veronica Hayslett, survives.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Jones-Preston Funeral Home in Paintsville. Burial will be in Highland Memorial Park in Staffordsville.

Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and until time of services Saturday at the funeral home.

Julice Taylor (1935-2009)

Julice Donald Taylor, 73, of Prestonsburg, husband of Ruth Ann Toombs Taylor, died Wednesday in Cabell Huntington Hospital in Huntington, W.Va.

He was born Nov. 11, 1935, at McCombs.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at Hall Funeral Home in Martin. Burial will be in Gethsemane Gardens in Prestonsburg.

Mary Newsome (1924-2009)

Mary Newsome, 84, of Ligon, died Wednesday in Highlands Regional Medical Center in Prestonsburg.

She was born Aug. 18, 1924, in Boyd County.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Ligon Church of God of Prophecy in Ligon. Burial will be in Burton Cemetery in Ligon.

Donald “Crud” Turner (1951-2009)

Donald “Crud” Lee Turner, 58, of Lexington, formerly of McDowell, died Thursday in the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington.

He was born Feb. 28, 1951, at Drift.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Old Beaver Regular Baptist Church at Minnie. Burial will be in Lucy Hall Cemetery at McDowell.

James “Jamie” Harper

James “Jamie” David Harper, 40, of Grassy Creek, died Wednesday in King’s Daughters Medical Center.

His wife, Jane Christine Dunn Harper, survives.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at Herald & Stewart & Halsey Funeral Home in West Liberty.

His wife, Gretchen White Flick, survives.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Phillips Funeral Home in Ironton. Burial will be in Sugar Creek Cemetery.

He was born June 7, 1913, in Fort Gay.

He was preceded in death by his wives, Mary Ann Roe and Margaret Milam.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church of Louisa. Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery in Napoleon, Ohio.

Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Young Funeral Home in Louisa.
