John Paul Vincent (1920-2008)
John Paul Vincent, 87, of Lexington, Ohio, died May 26, 2008, in Lexington Court Care Center. He was known by many and loved by all who had the pleasure to know him in both Ohio and Kentucky.
He was born June 8, 1920, in Hitchins, Ky., a very small town near Ashland. After graduating from Hitchins High School in 1938, he attended Morehead State University for two years and then enlisted in the Army because of World War II. He was assigned duty in the Pacific arena from 1940 to 1945, spending his years each at Okinawa, Guadalcanal and Biak, with short duties at New Caledonia.
Upon his return home from the war, John continued earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Dayton and his master’s degree from George Peabody College, Vanderbilt University. He dedicated his life and career to public education. He was a vocational teacher of typing, recordkeeping, shorthand and business procedures at Norwood High School near Cincinnati for more than 30 years.
He married his beloved wife of 53 years, Adele Glass Vincent, in 1946. She preceded him in death in 1999. He was also preceded in death by his oldest son, John Paul Vincent Jr., in 1994.
He is survived by his youngest son, Dan Vincent, also of Lexington, along with his daughter-in-law, Vicki Vincent, and his three grandchildren, Hannah, age 10, Abby, age 8 and Michael, age 5, whom he adored. He was a member of Lexington United Methodist Church of the Cross.
John and Adele were married in February 1946 at her parent’s farmhouse in Grayson, Ky. They spent wonderful, happy years raising their two sons in Norwood, Ohio, where both were involved in school work. John was a life member of the Ohio Retired Teachers Association. He had resided with his son in Lexington since his wife passed away in 1999.
Visitation for John Vincent will be at 11 a.m. Friday, May 30 at Caniff Funeral Home, 528 Wheatley Road, Westwood, Ashland, KY 41101 at 11 a.m., followed by the funeral at 1 p.m. Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park in Ashland.

Cecil M. Hinton (1917-2008)
Cecil M. Hinton passed away Monday, May 26 in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland, Ky.
Mr. Hinton was born Jan. 21, 1917, in Lewis County, Ky., a son of the late Charles and Elsie Himes Hinton. He was also preceded in death by an infant daughter, Dianne Hinton, a brother, Douglas Hinton, and a sister, Alice Gardner.
He was a member for 60 years of First Baptist Church of Ashland, where he served as a deacon and trustee. He was a director of the former Third National Bank.
Mr. Hinton was a 1939 graduate of the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture and the recipient of that school’s Distinguished Alumni Award in 1976. Throughout his life, he served on many advisory committees for UK’s College of Agriculture in the animal and poultry science departments.
Mr. Hinton came to Ashland in 1948 and established Hinton Hatcheries Inc., which he operated until his retirement in 1984. Other businesses he operated in the Ashland area included Valley Poultry Farms and Hyland Co.
Mr. Hinton was one of the founding members of the American Egg Board. He served as president of the Kentucky Poultry Improvement Federation. He served for 30 years as a member of the Boyd County Extension Council, with three consecutive terms as president.
He served on the FIVCO Area Development Council Advisory Board. He was also involved in work with the Ashland Area Chamber of Commerce. He was instrumental in the expansion of 4-H projects locally and across the state of Kentucky.
Mr. Hinton is survived by his wife of 67 years, Mary Agnes Russell Hinton; three daughters, Barbara Jean Hinton, Patty Hinton Kidd and her husband, Terry, and Janet Hinton Chatfield and her husband, Charlie, all of Ashland; four grandchildren, Matthew Hinton and his wife, Sarah, of Louisville, Ky., Courtney Chatfield of Huntington, W.Va., Amanda Holbrook of Lexington, Ky., and April Gillespie and her husband, Brian, of Ashland; and a great-granddaughter, Holly Jane Hinton. He is also survived by four nieces and two nephews.
The funeral service for Mr. Hinton will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Steen Funeral Home-Marshall Steen Chapel in Ashland by Dr. Scott Kilgore and the Rev. Harold Moore. Burial will be in Ashland Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. today, May 28.

Sarah Ann (Crisp) Hutchinson (1917-2008)
Sarah Ann Crisp Hutchinson, 90, of Ashland, Ky., died on May 26, 2008 in Kingsbrook Life Care Center.
She was born Nov. 4, 1917, in Greenup, Ky., to Thomas Jacob and Lucinda Lou Moore Crisp, and was one of 12 children.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Lloyd “Edd” Hutchinson, and two sons, Joe Edgar and Elvis Dennie. Siblings who preceded her in death were brothers Orville, Alden and Bascum and sisters Betty Imogene and Ella Mae Rice.
Surviving are her sons, Randel (Kathryn), James Arthur (Midge), Lee Roy, Ralph R. (Barbara), Harry S. Truman and Harold K. (Shirley); and her daughters, Jessie M. Thomas (Curtis), Arvilla Davis (Ronnie), Deloris McGlone (Joseph), Belvia Haywood, Wilma L. Blevins, Wanda Kay Blevins and Jacqueline Hutchinson. Also surviving are 25 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.
Surviving siblings are James Arthur Crisp, Ada Rucker, Edgar Crisp, Thelma Jenkins, Belvia Marie Jannings and Dennie Alford Crisp. She also leaves behind many nephews and nieces.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, May 30, 2008, at Steen Funeral Home-Marshall Steen Chapel, 3409 13th St., Ashland, with J.W. Holcomb officiating. Burial will be in East Carter Memorial Gardens in Grayson, Ky.
Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Edna Ison Fritz (1930-2008)
Edna Ison Fritz, 77, of Wurtland, Ky., died Monday, May 26, 2008, in King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland, Ky.
She was born Oct. 10, 1930, in Greenup County, Ky., a daughter of the late John and Essie Braden Ison.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harlan Fritz Jr., on April 20, 2006; a brother, Ralph Ison; and a sister, Louise Ison Melvin.
She attended South Fork Old Regular Baptist Church in Worthington, Ky.
She is survived by a son, Bruce Anthony Fritz of Wurtland; a daughter, Peggy Leigh Hayhurst and her husband, Tom, of Pleasanton, Calif.; a granddaughter, Amber Dawn Fritz Hall; three grandsons, Micah Thomas Hayhurst, Jansen Fritz Hayhurst and Kyle Jonathan Hayhurst; four great-grandchildren, Sarah Rane Hall, Michael Alexander Grayson Hall, Haley Madison Hall and Morgan Taylor Hayhurst; and two brothers, Leonard Ison of Wurtland and Stanley Ison of Flatwoods, Ky.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday, May 30, 2008, at South Fork Old Regular Baptist Church in Worthington by Elders Gary Blevins and Willis Tolliver. Burial will be in Bellefonte Memorial Gardens in Flatwoods.

Iola Stamper Sexton (1912-2008)
Iola Stamper Sexton, 95, of Grayson, Ky., passed away Monday, May 26 at her home.
Mrs. Sexton was born Aug. 10, 1912, in Eby, Ky., a daughter of the late Elmer and Anna McGlone Stamper. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Walter Sherman Sexton; three sisters, Edna Smith, Mae Leeson and Ada Adkins; a brother, Raymond Stamper; a half sister, Betty Lou Thompson; and a half brother, Stanley Stamper.
She was a resident of Grayson for 30 years and also resided in Columbus and Cleveland, Ohio. She was a retired beautician who operated her own beauty shop. She was a member of the Church of Christ in Columbus.
Iola is survived by a stepson, Gary (Karen) Sexton of Mooresville, N.C.; two sisters, Lillian (Earl) Greer and Leatha Nolty, both of Grayson; a half brother, Everett Stamper of Garrison; two grandchildren, Mike and Shelley; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 29, at Sparks Funeral Home in Grayson. Burial will be in Richardson Cemetery in Lewis County, Ky.
Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. today, May 28 at the funeral home.
Serving as pallbearers will be Claude E. Nolty, Monroe Burton, Garry Sexton, Donnie Stamper, William Greer and Oscar Lewis.

Lillian Kendall Kirkland
Lillian Kendall Kirkland, 90, of Columbus, Ohio, was granted peace by her Savior on Saturday, May 24, 2008, at her home at Friendship Village of Columbus.
Valedictorian of her high school class, Lillian later received both her B.A. and master’s degrees in literature. She was a professor of literature at Katharine Gibbs School, New York University, Greenvale University and North Idaho College. Later, after her teaching career, Lillian was a longtime employee of Ashland Chemical Co. She was an active and dedicated member of the PEO Sisterhood and a former member of the University Women’s Club. Lillian is preceded in death by her beloved husband and companion, Robert J. Kirkland Jr.
She is survived by her daughter, Kathy (John) Jakubowski, and granddaughter, Tara Jakubowski, all of Schaumberg, Ill.; a grandson, Erik (Johanna) Jakubowski of Huntley, Ill.; and many, many friends.
Family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Rutherford-Corbin Funeral Home, Worthington Chapel, 515 High St., Worthington, OH 43085, (614) 885-4006.
Funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Worthington Presbyterian Church, 773 High St., Worthington, where family will receive friends immediately before and after the service. A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Olive Hill Memorial Park in Olive Hill, Ky.
In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to consider memorial contributions to Mount Carmel/St. Ann’s Hospice, 793 W. State St., Columbus, OH 43222-9988 or to HARPS/Elite Health Services in Lillian’s memory.

Ollie “Pete” Ritchea Jr. (1928-2008)
Ollie “Pete” Ritchea Jr., 80, of Ironton, passed away Sunday, May 25, 2008, at his residence in Rock Hollow, where he had resided for the past 57 years, after an extended illness.
The Moundsville, W.Va., native was born March 1, 1928, the son of the late Ollie Ritchea Sr. and the late Helen Lilly Ritchea. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Alfreda Haynes Ritchea, who passed away on May 1, 2006.
Mr. Ritchea was a graduate of Moundsville High School and attended Storms Creek Missionary Baptist Church in Ironton and Hanging Rock Church of the Nazarene. He was a U.S. Army Korean War veteran and a former employee of Allied Chemical Semet Solvay as a river dock operator.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Marvin “Buck” Ritchea and Bobby Ritchea.
He is survived by two daughters, Vickie Lynn Blevins and Debra Dianna Gannon, both of Ironton; a grandson, Todd Linn Ritchea of Ironton; a granddaughter, Alisha Rae Gannon McKnight of Coal Grove; great-grandsons Jacob Ritchea and Jerry Kyle McKnight; great-granddaughter Mya Grace Ritchea; sisters Martha “Toots” DeGarmo of Pennsylvania and Betty Piersal of West Virginia; and brothers John Ritchea of Ohio and Ray Ritchea of California.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 29, 2008, at Phillips Funeral Home, 1004 S. Seventh St., Ironton, Ohio, with the Rev. Clell Elliott officiating. Burial will be in Sugar Creek Cemetery, with military rites by VFW Post 8850.

Gladys Parish Evans, 88, of Morehead, died Tuesday at her residence.
Her husband, Woodrow Evans, survives.

Walter Chudley (1930-2008)
Walter W. Chudley, 77, of Pedro, died Monday in King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland, Ky.
He was born April 24, 1930, in Denville, N.J.
His wife, Iris L. Smith Chudley, survives.
The funeral will be at 8 p.m. Friday at Tracy Brammer Funeral Home in Ironton.
