M.E. Sandridge - 1916-2008

M.E. “Pitt” Sandridge, 91, of Fishersville, Va., and formerly of Charlottesville, Va., and Ashland, Ky., died on Friday, May 23, 2008 in the Shenandoah Nursing Home in Fishersville.

Born Dec. 16, 1916, in Mechums River, Va., he was the son of the late E.A. Sandridge and Lelia Baber Sandridge. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Minnie Dorrier Sandridge, the mother of his son, Gene; and a sister, Garnett Lee Sandridge.

Pitt retired from the C & O Railroad as trainmaster with over forty years of service. He was a member of Hinton Avenue United Methodist Church and a former member of the Elks.

Surviving him are his wife, Barbara Sandridge of Charlottesville; his son, Gene A. Sandridge and his wife, Judy, of Fishersville; three grandchildren, Angela Tederick and her husband, David, Jeffrey Sandridge and his wife, Amy, and Matthew Sandridge; and six great-grandchildren, R. J., Darlene, Clayton, Kyle, Natalie and Zachary.

A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Monday, May 26, 2008, in the Hill and Wood Funeral Home with the Rev. Edward A. Hopkins officiating. Interment will follow in the Monticello Memory Gardens.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Sunday, May 25, 2008 in the funeral home.

The family suggests that any desired memorial contributions be made to Hinton Avenue United Methodist Church, 750 Hinton Avenue, Charlottesville, VA 22902.

Virginia Franz - 1923-2008

Virginia “Jenny” Maggard Franz, 85, of Flatwoods died Friday, May 23, 2008, in Chinnville. She was born Jan. 11, 1923, in Chinnville, the daughter of the late Alfred and Bessie Braden Maggard. She was the wife of the late Howard Lee Franz. She was a homemaker and attended 13th Street Baptist Church in Ashland.

She also was preceded in death by one son, David Leslie Franz; two brothers, Jim Maggard and Robert “Tootie” Maggard; and four sisters, Kay Ussery, Dean Morrison, Shirley Stith and Freda Henson.

Survivors include one son, Howard Gene Franz of Flatwoods; two daughters, Jenny and Don Ratliff of Russell and Nina Franz of Flatwoods; two grandchildren, Mickey and Diane Ratliff of Indiana, and Tony and Terri Ratliff of Russell; and five great-grandchildren, Dylan and Lennon Ratliff and Kristen, Camryn and Jessica Ratliff.

Graveside service will be 2:30 p.m. today at Bellefonte Memorial Gardens in Flatwoods, with Pastor Bill Parker officiating.

Visitation will be from noon to 2 p.m. today at Carman Funeral Home in Flatwoods.

Memorials may be made to Community Hospice Care Center, 1538 Central Avenue, Ashland, Ky. 41101.



Baby Angel Grace Gullett

Baby Angel Grace Gullett went to be with the Lord May 21, 2008, in Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital in Russell, Ky.

She is the daughter of Bill Gullett and Shanda Weeks of Greenup, Ky.

She is survived by one sister, Nevaeh Lynn Gullett, at home; paternal grandparents, John H. and Bonnie Gullett of Greenup; paternal great-grandmother, Vonda Gullett of Greenup; maternal grandparents, Thomas and Angie Fritz of Greenup; maternal great-grandmother, Louise Gunaca of Greenup; four uncles, John H. Gullett Jr., Tommy Fritz, Shane Fritz, and David Johnson, all of Greenup; and three aunts, Felicia L. Fritz and Candy L. Johnson, both of Greenup and Jodie Gullett of Wheelersburg, Ohio.

Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. today, at Gullett Cemetery on Whittier Road, Greenup by Bishop Kevin Whitt.

Arrangements are by Reed Funeral Home in Greenup.



Thomas McCoy - 1932-2008

Thomas Ray “Tom” McCoy, 76, of Louisa died Friday, May 23, 2008, in Three Rivers Medical Center in Louisa. He was born Jan. 11, 1932, in Matewan, W.Va., the son of Hazel Fluty McCoy of Inez, who survives and the late Tracy McCoy. He was the husband of Mary Copley McCoy, who survives. They were married for 56 years. He was a machine operator for Norfolk & Southern Railroad for over 46 years. He was a member of the New Friendship United Baptist Church and the Aperson Lodge 195 F&AM.

He also was preceded in death by a son, Russell David McCoy; two brothers, Paul McCoy and Claude McCoy; and one sister, Betty Short.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two sons, Thomas Ray McCoy Jr. of Catlettsburg and Freddie McCoy of Louisa; six sisters, Peggy Fannin of Inez, Wanda Hatfield of Columbus, Ohio, Violet Miller of Inez, Jean Belcher of Columbus, Pat Fitch of Inez and Edith Davis of Wheelersburg; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; five brothers, Ernest McCoy of Inez, Ed McCoy of Louisa, Clyde McCoy of Wheelersburg, Floyd McCoy of Inez and Roger McCoy of Columbus.

Funeral will be 1 p.m. Monday at Young Funeral Home Chapel in Louisa, with Doug Kelly and John Goble officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery in Louisa.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.



Samuel Luke

Samuel Lester Luke, 86, of Hazard, formerly of Pomeroyton, died Friday at Eastern Kentucky Veterans Center in Hazard.

Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Mt. Orab Cemetery in Mt. Orab, Ohio.

Menifee Home for Funerals is in charge of the arrangements.



David Lawson

David Lawson, 77, of Frenchburg died Friday at Edgewood Estates Nursing Home in Frenchburg.

Funeral will be 1 p.m. Monday at Menifee Home for Funerals in Frenchburg. Burial will be in Powers Cemetery in Frenchburg.

Visitation will be after 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.



Tim Craft

Tim Craft, 57, of Meally, died Friday at Highland Regional Medical Center in Prestonsburg.

He was born Nov. 29, 1950, in Johnson County.

His wife, Virginia Craft, preceded him in death.

Funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday at Jones-Preston Funeral Home in Paintsville, with Ronnie Spriggs officiating. Burial will be in Craft Family Cemetery on Preston Branch in Meally.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.



Jessie Wagoner

Jessie Wagoner, 45, of Isonville died Saturday in Elliott County.

Arrangements are pending at Waddell & Whitt Funeral Home in Sandy Hook.



Robert Sloan - 1925-2008

Robert Sloan, 82, of Muncie, Ind., died Wednesday at his home.

He was born June 3, 1925.

His wife, Marjorie Martt Sloan, preceded him in death.

Funeral will be 4 p.m. Tuesday at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals in Morehead. Burial will be in Stewart Cemetery in Clearfield.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.



May Pennington

May Walter Pennington, 83, of Ironton died Friday at King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland.

Arrangements are pending at O’Keefe-Baker funeral Home in Ironton.



Karen Lewis - 1942-2008

Karen Quarles Lewis, 65, of Tallahassee, Fla., formerly of Ironton, died Tuesday at her home.

She was born Oct. 1, 1942, in Ironton.

Her husband, Thomas H. Lewis, survives.

Graveside service was 11 a.m. Saturday at Woodland Cemetery in Ironton.

There will be no visitation.

Tracy Brammer Funeral Home in Ironton is in charge of the arrangements.



Gary Neal

Gary Neal, 74, of Ironton died Saturday at his home.
