Dorothy Johns - 1933-2008
Dorothy Mildred “Dee Dee” Stewart Johns, 75, of Ashland, passed away Tuesday afternoon, May 20, 2008, in Community Hospice Care Center.
Dorothy was born May 13, 1933, in Carter County, Ky., a daughter of the late Greenville and Nora McKinney Stewart.
Dorothy formerly worked for Hewlett Packard in the electronics department. She was a member of Gospel Tabernacle Church and a Kentucky colonel.
In addition to her parents, Dorothy was preceded in death by her loving husband of 55 years, George Milton Johns Sr., and a sister, Lola Mae Morrisey.
Dorothy is survived by a son, George Milton “Bud” (Kaye) Johns Jr. of Catlettsburg, Ky.; three daughters, Joanna (Tom) Robinson of Troy, Texas, Jetta (the late Bob) Townsend of Gallatin, Tenn., and Kiva Johns (Jeff) Adkins of Georgetown, Ky.; three brothers, Bob (Marge) Stewart of Paintsville, Ky., Lowell Green (Lois) Stewart of Ashland, Ky., and Gary (Marilyn) Stewart of Ruskin, Fla; two sisters, Mary (Tommy) Williams of Ashland and Loretta Curtis (Dean) Maddox of Jacksonville, Fla.; five grandchildren, Melissa Bohanan, Tessa Johnston, Ashleigh Adkins, Christopher Michael Johns and Kyle Adkins; and five great-grandchildren, Tristan Johnston, Samantha Brown, Cody Bohanan, Nicholas Brown and Conner James Johns.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 24, 2008, at Caniff Funeral Home in Westwood by Kenneth Vaughn, minister.
Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday and an hour before services Saturday at the funeral home.

Ellena Elizabeth West Armstrong - 1921-2008
Ellena Elizabeth West Armstrong, 86, of Summit, went home to be with the Lord on May 21, 2008, in Woodland Oaks Health Care Facility.
She was born July 28, 1921, in South Point, Ohio, a daughter of the late George Thomas West and Mary Cook Hughes West.
In addition, she was preceded in death by her husband, Orville Armstrong, in 1980; a son, Curtis Armstrong; two stepsons, Okey Armstrong and Robert Armstrong; two brothers, Ernest West and George Hughes; and three sisters, Sarah Cecelia West Castle, Myrtle Hess and Nina Otto.
She was a homemaker and of the Methodist faith.
Surviving are four sons, Carroll Armstrong and wife Jeanie of Bakersfield, Calif., Calvin Armstrong and wife Gay of Summit, Jimmy Armstrong and wife Penny of Summit and Keith Armstrong and wife Debbie of Flatwoods; a stepson, Cecil Armstrong and wife Phyllis; stapdaughters Shirley Armstrong Murnahan and husband Paul and Phyllis Armstrong Hutchinson and husband Charlie; 15 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; a very special niece, Linda Castle Evans; and several other nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday, May 23, 2008, at Steen Funeral Home-Marshall Steen Chapel in Ashland by the Rev. Jimmy Morrison. Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park.

Albert Ferguson - 1919-2008
Albert Ferguson, 88, of Worthington, Ky., died May 17, 2008, in Huntington, W.Va.
He was born Sept. 18, 1919, in Huntington, a son of the late James A. and Betty Webb Ferguson and the late Elizabeth Howerton Ferguson.
He was also preceded in death by his wives, Jean Jones Ferguson and Juanita Scott Ferguson; brothers Ernest Ferguson, Billy Ferguson, Donald Ferguson, Eddie Ferguson and James Ferguson; and a sister, Audrey Nickell.
He was a retired maintenance supervisor with CSX Railroad, a member of Antioch Christian Church in Greenup, Ky., and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
Surviving are a son, Kent Taylor of Nashville, Ind.; a daughter, Janice A. Seymour of Cincinnati, Ohio; grandchildren Julie Taylor, Anna Johnson and Andrew Seymour; and a sister, Ruby Williams of Wurtland.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday, May 23 at Carman Funeral Home in Flatwoods, Ky., by the Rev. Kail Ruffner. Burial will be in Bellefonte Memorial Gardens in Flatwoods, with military rites by VFW Post 8850 of Ironton, Ohio.

Caleb Joseph Nolen - 2001-2008
Caleb Joseph Nolen, 6, of Flatwoods, Ky., died May 19, 2008, at his residence.
He was born Aug. 30, 2001 in Ashland, Ky., the only child of Donald James Akers and Randi Nolen of Flatwoods.
He attended Raceland First Assembly of God and was a student at Russell Primary School.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Sherwyn Nolen.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by aunts Carrie (David) Stephens and Becky (John) Hall of Grayson, Ky.; maternal grandfather Randy Nolen of Grayson; paternal grandparents Jim and Donna Akers of Greenup, Ky., and Donna Scaggs; maternal stepgrandfather Franklin Borland of Greenup; and aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
Caleb was no ordinary 6-year-old. He was wise beyond his years and had an insight into life that most adults never fully achieve. He was so special and his death was so unexpected, so sudden.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday, May 23, at Raceland First Assembly of God by Pastor James E. Wells. Burial will be in Pettit Cemetery in Greenup, Ky.

Bunice Burgess - 1929-2008
Bunice Burgess, 78, of Pensacola, Fla., formerly of Elliott County, passed away Sunday, May 18, 2008, in the Health Center of Pensacola.
She was born Sept. 15, 1929, in Elliott County, the daughter of the late Lewis and Etta Adkins Mayse. She was also preceded in death by a son, Morris Riley.
She was a homemaker.
She is survived by a daughter, Diana K. and husband John Duty of Pensacola; a sister, Eileen and husband Gray White of Sandy Hook, Ky.; four grandchildren, James, Chad, Stephanie and Jhonda; and 11 great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. today, May 22, 2008, at Elliott County Memory Gardens.

Jettie A. Moore - 1923-2008
Jettie A. Moore, 85, formerly of Ky. 1, Louisa, Ky., died May 20, 2008, in Boyd County Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Ashland, Ky.
Mrs. Moore was born Feb. 6, 1923, in Charley, Ky., a daughter of the late Julis and Cosbey McGrannahan Swann.
Her husband, Augustus “Buzzie” Moore, died in 1999.
She was a housewife and member of Charley Freewill Baptist Church at Charley.
Surviving are two daughters, Nola Jean Davis and Julia Lee Mork, both of Ashland; a sister, Goldie Mooney of Columbus, Ohio; a brother, South Swann of Oak Hill, Ohio; two grandchildren, Jennifer Lynn Minigh and Christy Michelle Lyon; and a great-grandchild, Julia Marie Minigh.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday, May 23, 2008, at Charley Freewill Baptist Church by the Rev. Willie Gene Hayes and the Rev. Jimmie Bevins. Burial will be in Hayes Cemetery in Louisa.
