Bonnie Lou McDowell Davis - 1967-2008
Bonnie Lou McDowell Davis, 41, of Ashland, Ky., died May 18, 2008, in King’s Daughters Medical Center.
She was born Feb. 17, 1967, in Ashland, a daughter of the late James Monroe McDowell and Ina Mae Tackett McDowell.
Also preceding her in death were a brother-in-law, Dallace Hill.
She was a former employee of Jack’s South Ashland Market, a graduate of Boyd County High School and attended Second Freewill Baptist Church.
Surviving are her husband, Danny Joe Davis of Ashland; two sons, Henry E. “Trey” Withrow III and wife Ashley and James Tyler Withrow, all of Ashland; stepdaughters Holly Elizabeth Carey and husband Shane and Emily Suzanne Davis, both of Ashland; brothers Buddy James McDowell of Catlettsburg, Jerry Lee McDowell and wife Gina of Chillicothe, Ohio, Jonathan Ricky McDowell and wife Lillian of Catlettsburg, Michael Edward McDowell and wife Angel of Catlettsburg, Donald Ray McDowell and wife Michelle of Ashland and Frankie Short and wife Tina of Ashland; a sister, Vickie Lynn McDowell Hill of Ashland; a stepgrandchild, Alexis Brooke Davis; mother-in-law and father-in-law Bobby and Millateen Davis of Ashland; brother-in-law Jeff Davis and wife Teresa of Olive Hill, Ky.; sister-in-law Pam and Chuck Mauk of Ashland; special aunt Linda Madden and husband Walter; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. today, May 21, 2008, at Steen Funeral Home-Central Avenue Chapel in Ashland by the Rev. Randy Skaggs. Burial will be in Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Jerry McDowell, Jonathan McDowell, Michael McDowell, Donald McDowell, Frankie Short, Chuck Mauk, Berry Mauk and Garland Alexander. Honorary pallbearers will be James Frankie McDowell and Charles “Boo” McDowell.

Joseph Andrew Kearns - 1914-2008
Joseph Andrew Kearns, 94, of Ashland, passed away Friday, May 9, 2008, in Hillspring Nursing Home in Springboro, Ohio, after an extended illness.
He was born on May 5, 1914, in Rowlesburg, W.Va., the fifth of eight children of Joseph Peter Kearns and Elizabeth Flanigan, both deceased.
He was also preceded in death by his siblings, Mary Kearns, Margaret Carrico, William Kearns, Claire Kearns, Helen Kearns, John Kearns and Betty Kearns, and his wife, Jeanne Bullock Kearns.
He is survived by his son, Matthew Kearns of Los Angeles, Calif.; his daughter, Brigid Paley; his son-in-law, Dr. Kevin Paley; and grandchildren Nicholas and Julia Paley of Dayton, Ohio.
After service in the Army during World War II, he graduated from West Virginia University and moved to Ashland, where he worked as a pharmaceutical representative for the Upjohn Co. for 35 years, covering the entire Tri-State region. He additionally served in the Kentucky National Guard and retired from military duty as a lieutenant colonel. His retirement years in Ashland were spent as a tireless volunteer for the Boyd County Public Library and the American Red Cross.
A funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 24, 2008, at Holy Family Church in Ashland. His cremains will be available for viewing for 30 minutes before the Mass. Burial will be private.

Ray Gorden Conley - 1932-2008
Ray Gorden Conley died Monday, May 19, 2008, in King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland, Ky., following a brave battle with cancer.
He was born in Boyd County, Ky., on Oct. 6, 1932, the second son of the late Golda Belle Hicks Conley and Gaylord Leo Conley. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Patricia Burns Conley, and his younger brother, Carl Edmond Conley. Gorden graduated from Boyd County High School with the Class of 1951. He received Jesus as his Savior in February 2007 and was baptized at Fairview Baptist Church.
Following the death of his wife in 1999, he began a monthly breakfast meeting with his classmates from BCHS, and for the following 10 years never missed a breakfast with them. He also met daily for breakfast with his friends at JJ Restaurant on Monday through Saturday and Dairy Queen on Sunday mornings. He never met a stranger and was a friend to everyone he came into contact with.
Gorden began working immediately following high school, driving a truck for Charlie Yates. After that, he worked for Zane Grey, installing gas pumps for service stations around the area. He began his career at Armco Steel as a laborer and then transferred to crane operator, where he stayed until his retirement in 1993. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and trapping in his young years and during his retirement.
Survivors include his daughter, Vicky Conley Crump, and her husband, Preston, of Ashland; his son, Greg Conley, and wife Kathy of Lexington; granddaughters Stacy Crump and Jennifer Messer of Ashland; grandsons Ryan and Tate Martin of Lexington; great-grandsons Braydon Ray and Konner Gregory Messer of Ashland; brother Ronald Conley and wife Flossie of Catlettsburg; his sister-in-law, Betty Ann Burns Craft of Ashland; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 22, 2008, at Fairview Baptist Church by the Rev. Michael Rice. Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today, May 21, 2008, at Steen Funeral Home-Central Avenue Chapel in Ashland.

Dorothy Johns - 1933-2008
Dorothy Mildred “Dee Dee” Stewart Johns, 75, of Ashland, passed away Tuesday afternoon, May 20, 2008, in Community Hospice Care Center.
Dorothy was born May 13, 1933, in Carter County, Ky., a daughter of the late Lowell Green and Nora McKinney Stewart.
Dorothy formerly worked for Hewlett Packard in the electronics department. She was a member of Gospel Tabernacle Church and a Kentucky colonel.
In addition to her parents, Dorothy was preceded in death by her loving husband of 55 years, George Milton Johns Sr., and a sister, Lola Mae Massey.
Dorothy is survived by a son, George Milton “Bud” (Kaye) Johns Jr. of Catlettsburg, Ky.; three daughters, Joanna (Tom) Robinson of Troy, Texas, Jetta (the late Bob) Townsend of Gallatin, Tenn., and Kiva Johns (Jeff) Adkins of Georgetown, Ky.; three brothers, Bob (Marge) Stewart of Paintsville, Ky., L.G. (Lois) Stewart of Ashland, Ky., and Gary (Marilyn) Stewart of Ruskin, Fla; two sisters, Mary (Tommy) Williams of Ashland and Loretta Curtis (Dean) Maddox of Jacksonville, Fla.; five grandchildren, Melissa Bohanan, Tessa Johnston, Ashleigh Adkins, Christopher Michael Johns and Kyle Adkins; and five great-grandchildren, Tristan Johnston, Samantha Johnston Brown, Cody Bohanan, Nicholas Brown and Conner James Johns.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 24, 2008, at Caniff Funeral Home in Westwood by Chaplain Lee Gussler.

Bernice Lewis - 1928-2008
Bernice Alice Johnson Lewis, 80, of Ashland, passed away Tuesday morning, May 20, 2008, in King’s Daughters Medical Center.
Bernice was born March 21, 1928, in Boyd County, Ky., a daughter of the late Alfred “Lit” and Martha Sturgill Johnson.
Bernice was a secretary for the Fairview Independent School District for many years, attended Westwood United Baptist Church, volunteered at the Paramount Arts Center and was a former member of TOPS.
In addition to her parents, Bernice was preceded in death by her husband, William McKinley Lewis Jr.; a son, William Alfred Lewis; and a sister, Joan Holmes.
She is survived by a son, Jeffrey Dale (Sherri) Lewis of Ashland, Ky.; two brothers, Ronald (Joyce) Johnson of Westwood and Alfred (Helen) Johnson of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; three sisters, Sandra Payne of Plainfield, Ill., Joy (Jim) McGehee of Hurricane, W.Va., and Janet (Jack) Marushi of Westwood; a grandchild, Jeremy (Rachel) Lewis of Ashland; two stepgrandchildren, Jennifer Riggs of Flatwoods and David (Amy) Henderson of Ashland; a great-grandchild, William K. Lewis; and three stepgreat-grandchildren, Kayleigh Adkins and Bryan and Olivia Riggs.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, May 23, 2008, at Caniff Funeral Home in Westwood. Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park. Grandsons and nephews will serve as pallbearers.

Albert Ferguson - 1919-2008
Albert Ferguson, 88, of Worthington, Ky., died May 17, 2008, at his residence.
Mr. Ferguson was born Sept. 18, 1919, in Huntington, W.Va., a son of the late James A. and Betty Webb Ferguson.
Also preceding him in death were his wife, Juanita Scott Ferguson; brothers Ernest Ferguson, Billy Ferguson, Donald Ferguson and Eddie Ferguson; and sister Audrey Nichel.
He was a retired maintenance supervisor with CSX Railroad, a member of Antioch Christian Church in Greenup, Ky., and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
Surviving are a stepson, Kent Taylor of Nashville, Ind., and a daughter, Janice A. Seymour of Cincinnati.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday, May 23 at Carman Funeral Home in Flatwoods, Ky., by the Rev. Kail Ruffner. Burial will be in Bellefonte Memorial Gardens in Flatwoods, with military rites by Ironton VFW Post 8850.

Caleb Joseph Nolen - 2001-2008
Caleb Joseph Nolen, 6, of Flatwoods, died May 19, 2008, at his residence.
He was born Aug. 30, 2001, in Ashland, Ky., and is the son of Donald James Akers and Randi Nolen of Flatwoods, Ky.
He attended Raceland First Assembly of God and was a student at Russell Primary School.
Additional survivors include sisters Carrie Stephens and Becky Hall of Grayson, Ky.; maternal grandfather Randy Nolen of Grayson; paternal grandparents Jim and Donna Akers of Greenup; and maternal stepgrandfather Franklin Borland of Greenup.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday, May 23, at Raceland First Assembly of God by Pastor James E. Wells. Burial will be in Pettit Cemetery in Greenup.

Misty Jackson Rucker - 1976-2008
Misty Jackson Rucker, 31, of Rush, Ky., died Tuesday in Cabell Huntington Hospital following an automobile accident.
She was born Oct. 1, 1976, in Ashland, Ky., a daughter of Michael “Mick” and Robin Steele Jackson. She was a member of Stinson Church of Christ and office manager for American Health Center.
In addition to her parents, her survivors include her husband, Adam Wesley Rucker of Rush; a son, Aden Rucker, and a daughter, Larissa James, both of Rush; a brother, Matthew Jackson of Grayson; her mother-in-law and father-in-law, Danny and Vicky Rucker of Rush; and her maternal grandmother, Dorothy Ann Kiser Steele of Grayson.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Malone Funeral Home in Grayson by Bill Dillon, minister.
Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today and after 9 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Saundra Bradley Leach, 63, of Olive Hill, died Monday in St. Claire Regional Medical Center in Morehead.
She was born Aug. 17, 1944, in Carter County.
Her husband, Raymond Leach, survives.

William Little - 1946-2008
William R. Little, 62, of Drift, died Monday in McDowell Appalachian Regional Hospital.
He was born Feb. 27, 1946, in Melvin.
His wife, Linda Howell Little, survives.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Hall Funeral Home in Martin. Burial will be in Lucy Hall Cemetery in McDowell.
Lizzie Webb - 1923-2008
Lizzie B. Webb, 84, of Oil Springs, died Monday at her residence.
She was born June 6, 1923, in Magoffin County.
Her husband, Robert Webb, died in 2005.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Jones-Preston Funeral Home in Paintsville. Burial will be in Blanton Family Cemetery in Oil Springs.

Karen Quarles Lewis, 65, of Tallahassee, Fla., formerly of Ironton, died Tuesday at her residence.
