James Dunbar

James Edwin Dunbar of Lexington, Mich., passed away on May 13, 2008. Jim and his wife, Sheila, are proprietors of the Lexington Booksmith and Gallery in Lexington.

Jim graduated from Morehead State University in 1967. There he met his wife, Sheila Collins Dunbar, the daughter of the Rev. Powell and Arretta Billiter Collins of Boyd County, Ky.

Jim began his teaching career at Coles Junior High School in 1967. From there he went to Boyd County High School, where he taught art and was a leader for a local Boy Scout troop.

After the couple moved to Michigan in 1969, Jim taught art and was a teachers’ computer consultant for Warren Consolidated Schools in Warren, Mich. He also taught in the TAPP program for the gifted and talented.

His students admired “Mr. Dunbar,” and after graduation often returned to visit him. The dramatic productions that were presented during his time with TAPP were wonderful learning experiences for his “kids” as well as enjoyable life experiences for Jim.

During the last few years of Jim's career at Warren Consolidated, he created a Web site for the school system, one of the best in the state for its time.

Post retirement, Jim found a beautiful piece of land, north of Lexington in Sanilac County, Mich., where he and Sheila had a home built. After moving to Lexington, they joined the Black River Art Club, whose members welcomed them and introduced them to the “thumb area’s” art community. In appreciation, Jim created a beautiful Web site for the club and included histories and photographs. His creativity never slackened.

In the summer of 2007, Jim and Sheila opened the Lexington Booksmith and Gallery in Lexington. Jim loved books, art and people. He enjoyed talking with readers and authors as well as artists who visited the shop.

The Booksmith was visited by people from all over the world during the summer season and they each received the warmest of welcomes by the quaint shop’s “booksmith.” He was in his element. Lexington has lost a treasure with Jim's passing.

James Edwin Dunbar is the son of the late Mary Elizabeth Reigle Dunbar and Morris W. Dunbar of Monroe, Mich.

Jim and Sheila celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary this year. They met at Morehead State University in Morehead, Ky., where they attended college and received his teaching degree there. When they met, Jim was reading his own poetry creations in a coffee house. Sheila was in the audience. They met and fell in love so deeply that the next 40 years flew by, filled with good memories and lots of laughter.

Jim is survived by his wife, Sheila; two sons; two daughters-in-law; and four grandchildren.

There will be a private memorial service on May 26, 2008.
