Jack B. Hanks (1930-2008)
Jack B. Hanks, age 78, of Ashland passed away Friday, May 16, 2008, at Boyd Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, with his family by his side.
He was born May 6, 1930, in Russell to the late John C. and Flores Fleming Hanks. He was raised in Willard and graduated from Hitchins High School. He proudly served in the U.S. Army and graduated from Frazier Institute of Barbering in Louisville. He was employed by Osborne’s Barber Shop before starting Jack’s Barber Shop in 1955. He later became co-owner of Roffler of Ashland with his present business partner, Buck Mullins, of 47 years. He helped pioneer hair replacement in the Tri-State area when starting Jack Hanks Hair Replacement in 1969. He was a former distributor for New Man Hair Replacement and franchise owner of HRS hair replacement.
He loved his family, the Lord and his church. He enjoyed fishing, boating, vacationing with his family, walking, relaxing outdoors and working. He was a member of Ashland Plaza church of the Nazarene and a former board member. He was a former bluegrass musician and loved southern gospel music.
Surviving are his wife, Geneva Kitchen Hanks; a daughter, Debbie Jennings of Ashland and her son, Brandon Nabors, of Nashville, Tenn.; son, Jack D. Hanks and his wife, Tina, and their son, Isaiah of Ashland; siblings, Howard Hanks of Ashland, Tom Hanks of Columbus, sister, Shirley Seagraves of Johns Run and many nieces, nephews and friends too numerous to list.
He also was preceded in death by a brother, the Rev. Clyde Hanks of Columbus.
He will be sadly missed and forever in our hearts.
In honor of Jack, visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at Steen Funeral Home, Marshall Steen Chapel, 3409 13th St.
Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Monday, May 19, at Ashland Plaza Church of the Nazarene, with Pastor Kevin Campbell and Pastor Rob Hale officiating. Final resting place will be in Rose Hill Mausoleum in Ashland.
He will lie in state from noon to 1 p.m. before the services at the church.

Frances Parsons (1942-2008)
Frances Jeanette Bruce Parsons, of Ashland, passed away Friday, May 16, 2008, at her home.
Mrs. Parsons was 66 years of age, born January 23, 1942, a daughter of the late Robert and Helen Farrell Bruce. She was employed in accounts receivable with Dealers Auto Auction, customer service with Giovanni’s, a member of the Humane Society and ASPCA, working diligently at anything related to saving animals. Her leisure time was spent crocheting and going to garage sales.
Sadly Fran leaves behind her loving husband of 44 years, Joel Douglas Parsons; her adoring children, Robert Parsons of Ashland, Suzanne Jeanette Parsons and her fiancé John Michael St. Angelo of Jacksonville, Fla., Jesse Douglas Parsons and his companion Carla Estep of Ashland, Joel Patrick Parsons and his companion Susan Flyzik of Fort Worth, Texas; a step-son, Joel Douglas Curtis and his wife Trisha Curtis of Midlothian, Texas; a step-daughter, Kathy Cross and her husband Carl Cross of Florida; one brother, Robert Gerald Bruce and his wife Noreen Frances Bruce of Hanover, Mass.; her sister-in-law, Betty Mae Bruce of Braintree, Mass.; seven precious grandchildren, Chris Wilson, Joel Cary Bishop, Jessica Paige Bishop, Jesse Garrett Parsons, MacKenzie Nicole Parsons, Tanner Hurst Parsons, Cole Douglas Parsons; two step-grandsons, Brian Parsons and Grant Parsons; many nieces and nephews; and two special furry friends, Molly and Sigma.
As well as her parents, she is preceded in death by a brother, Richard James Bruce; and a step-grandson, Brent Douglas Curtis.
A Catholic Scripture Service will be at 10 a.m. Monday, May 19, 2008, at Holy Family Church with Father John Noe officiating. A Protestant funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Neal Funeral Home on Center Street in Catlettsburg. Words of comfort and inspiration will be offered by her brother-in-law, Pastor Bruce Pickard. Final rest follows a committal at Ashland Cemetery.
Visitation for family and friends will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Maxie Riley, 91, died Saturday at Oakmont Manor Nursing Home in Ashland.

Melinda Cornette
Melinda Cornette, 51, died Saturday at her home.
Arrangements are pending at Steen Funeral Home, Central Avenue Chapel, in Ashland.

Jayda Hensley
Baby Jayda Reece Hensley, daughter of Dale and Stephanie McDavid Hensley, was stillborn Friday in Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington.
Arrangements are pending at Malone Funeral Home in Grayson.

Richard Preston (1938-2008)
Richard Dencil Preston, 69, of Van Lear died Friday at his home.
He was born Aug. 22, 1938, in Floyd County.
His wife, Patricia Keen Preston, survives.
Funeral will be 1 p.m. Monday at Jones-Preston Funeral Home Chapel in Paintsville. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery in Staffordsville.
Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Thelma Pelfrey
Thelma Ruth Cable Pelfrey, 77, of Campton died Thursday in Beattyville.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. today at Herald & Stewart & Halsey Chapel in West Liberty. Burial will be in Cable-Pelfrey Cemetery in Campton.

Virginia Gillenwater (1926-2008)
Virginia Ann Gillenwater, 81, of Johnson City, Tenn., formerly of Ironton, Ohio, died Friday at her home.
She was born Nov. 16, 1926, in Ironton.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Phillips Funeral Home in Ironton. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery in Ironton.
Visitation will be after 1 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Kenneth Patrick (1929-2008)
Kenneth E. Patrick, 79, of Ironton, formerly of South Point, died Thursday at King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland.
He was born Feb. 7, 1929, in Ironton.
His wife, Sue Pierson Patrick, survives.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Tracy Brammer Funeral Home in Ironton. Burial will be in Highland Memorial Gardens in South Point.
Visitation will be one hour before the services at the funeral home.

Billy Frazier (1937-2008)
Billy Frazier, 70, of Kermit, W.Va., died Saturday in Kermit.
He was born June 13, 1937, in Ft. Gay, W.Va.
His wife, Helen Marie Web Frazier, preceded him in death.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Oak Grove Church in Ft. Gay. Burial will be in Robertson Cemetery in Ft. Gay.
Visitation will be after noon Monday at the church.
Young Funeral Home in Louisa is in charge of the arrangements.
