Lawrence G. Walker Jr.

Lawrence G. Walker Jr., 64, of Westerville, Ohio, formerly of Ashland, passed away Saturday, May 10, 2008, in St. Ann’s Hospital in Westerville.

He retired from Huntington National Bank and was a 1967 graduate of the University of Kentucky. He was an avid photographer and enjoyed gardening. He was a member of Westbridge Camera Club and a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War.

Preceding him in death were his parents, L. Gordon and Martha Ann Walker.

Surviving are his wife, Bernae Walker; a brother, David (Lynn) Walker of Fayetteville, Ohio; a sister, Jane Bailey of Lexington, Ky.; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and good friends.

Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 17, 2008, at Burkhart Chapel, First Community Church, 1320 Cambridge Blvd., Grandview, Ohio, by the Rev. James L. Long. There will be private interment.

Arrangements are by Moreland Funeral Home in Westerville.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Inniswood Garden Society, 940 S. Hempstead Road, Westerville, OH 43081 or the American Cancer Society.



Randy J. “Joe” Ratliff - 1965-2008

Randy J. “Joe” Ratliff, 42, of Ashland, Ky., died Tuesday, May 13, 2008, at his residence.

He was born June 18, 1965, in Wyandotte, Mich., a son of Bobby Gene and Peggy Lou Kouns Ratliff of Ashland.

Additional survivors include his wife, Tracy Sammons Ratliff of Ashland; two sons, James Ratliff and Rusty Ratliff, both at home; a daughter, Courtney Ratliff at home; and two sisters, Bobbie Most of Ashland and Teri (David) Stringer of Raceland, Ky.

The funeral will be at noon Friday, May 16, 2008, at Lazear Funeral Home in Ashland by Pastor Dennis Miles. Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park.

Friends may call after 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Lazear Funeral Home to help with funeral expenses.



Talmadge Walker Jr. - 1925-2008

Talmadge Walker Jr., 83, of Ashland, Ky., went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, May 14, 2008, in Cabell Huntington Hospital in Huntington, W.Va.

Mr. Walker was born March 12, 1925, in Raceland, Ky., a son of the late Talmadge Sr. and Oma Hearld Walker. He was also preceded in death by an infant daughter, Ruth Ann Walker, and several brothers and sisters.

He was a retired employee of Wheeler Williams in Ashland, attended Brush Creek Freewill Baptist Church and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

Surviving are his loving wife of 60 years, Geneva Riggs Walker; a daughter and her husband, Carolyn and Dale Webb of Naples, Ky.; a son, Talmadge Eugene Walker of Bowling Green, Ky.; seven grandchildren, Aurora, Eric, Nathan, Meredith, Megan, Leanna and Natalie; and seven great-grandchildren, Aria, Nicholas, Cameron, Macie, Erin, Jayden and Marshall “Ty.”

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 17, 2008, at Evans Funeral Home in Raceland, Ky., by Pastor David Webb. Burial will be in Riggs Family Cemetery at Grahn, Ky.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.



Tandy Callihan - 1919-2008

Tandy Callihan, 88, of Flatwoods, Ky., went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, May 13, 2008, in Oakmont Manor Nursing Home in Flatwoods.

Mr. Callihan was born Aug. 21, 1919, in Oldtown, Ky., a son of the late Hamilton and Elizabeth Potters Callihan. He was also preceded in death by one son, James “Buddy” Callihan, and several brothers and sisters.

He was a retired heavy-equipment operator for Operators and Engineers Local 181 and a member of Kenwood Baptist Church in Russell.

Surviving are his loving wife, Betty Hamilton Callihan; a daughter and her husband, Joyce and Ed Freeman of Flatwoods; a son and his wife, Dennis and Claudia Callihan of Flatwoods; a grandson whom he reared, Michael “Mike” Caudill and his wife, Tammy, of Flatwoods; and a granddaughter, Erin Brooke Freeman of Lexington, Ky.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, May 16, 2008, at Evans Funeral Home in Raceland, Ky., by the Rev. Dallas Sutton, Dr. Tom Melvin and Brother Clyde Newman. Burial will be in Bellefonte Memorial Gardens in Flatwoods.

Friends may call after 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.



Virginia “Jenny” Phillips - 1936-2008

Virginia “Jenny” Phillips, 71, of Grayson, Ky., went to be with her Lord on Tuesday, May 13, 2008, in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland, Ky.

She was born Aug. 13, 1936, in Carter County, Ky., a daughter of the late John Curtis and Bertie Alice Williams Kees.

She was employed with Everman’s Cleaners for more than 30 years and was of the Christian faith.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Mary A. Seagraves, and two brothers, Gearld G. Kees and James Kees.

Her survivors include her husband, Walter C. Phillips of Grayson; her children, Robin (Brent) Bledsoe and Bryan C. Kees Sr., all of Grayson, and Louie W. (Wendi) Phillips of Union, Ky.; her grandchildren, Jennifer (Jacob) Dickerson of South Point, Ohio, Stephen Ryan Bledsoe and Bryan C. Kees Jr., both of Grayson, and Amber D. Phillips of Union; a sister, Carolyn J. Bush of Grayson; and three brothers, Percy (Linda) Kees of Grayson, Charles S. (Pat) Kees of Ashland and Kenny Kees of Grayson.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, May 16, 2008, at Malone Funeral Home in Grayson by Tom Gemeinhart and Bill Thomas. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today, May 15 and after 9 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Ronnie Wallace, Bill Thomas, Tommy Fyffe, Owen Phillips, Ershel Stephens and Marvin McHenry.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Community Hospice Care Center, 2330 Pollard Road, Ashland, KY 41101.

Gary Edward Hall - 1945-2008

Gary Edward Hall, 62, of Grayson, Ky., died Tuesday, May 13, at his residence.

Gary was born Dec. 1, 1945, a son of the late George Sherman Hall and the late Nannalee Evans Hall.

He was a member of Wolf Creek Baptist Church. He was employed as a blender with Marathon. His interests/hobbies were his church, reading and travel.

Gary is survived by his wife, Molly Jean; two children: a son, Brian Patton (Sherry) Hall of Arlington, Va., and a daughter, Leigh Suzanne Hall of Mooresville, N.C.; two grandchildren, Alexander Reilly Hall and Dylan Connor Hall; four sisters, Grace (Hobert) Rogers of Ashland, Allene (Hack) Walker of Mansfield, Ohio, Laura Miller of South Shore and Lillian (Bert) Blevins of Olive Hill; and two brothers, Dean Mullins of Florida and Alva Buck (Annie) Mullins of Ashland.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four sisters, Donna Gilliam, Ethel Looney, Nadine Leadingham and Imogene Hall; and three brothers, Mitchell Hall, Woodrow Hall and Tracy Hall.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, May 16, at Sparks Funeral Home in Grayson by Dan Russell, minister.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. today, May 15 at the funeral home.

Burial will be in East Carter County Memory Gardens in Grayson.

Dixie Brown Pelfrey -1920-2008

Dixie Brown Pelfrey, 87, went home to be with the Lord and her husband, John Pelfrey, whom she lost nine weeks ago.

She was born Aug. 10, 1920, in Morgan County, the daughter of the late Frank and Margaret Wallin Brown.

Besides her husband, she was also preceded in death by brothers and sisters Marvin and Emerson Brown, Goldie Speis and Maxine Swain.

She was a loving mother and grandmother, a homemaker and a member of Paint Valley Enterprise Baptist Church in Morgan County.

She is survived by three children, Carol and John Wetzel Triplett of Webbville, Ky., Johnny and Vickie Pelfrey of Lancaster, Ohio, and Ron and Beverly Pelfrey of Winchester, Ky.; seven grandchildren, Teresa and Mark Lewis of Sandy Hook, Ky., Rodney and Tiffney Triplett of Staffordsville, Ky., Lorie and Rick Tillis of Jacksonville, Fla., Mark and Angela Pelfrey of Pataskala, Ohio, and Savannah, Monee and Caroline Pelfrey, all of Winchester; and seven great-grandchildren, Andrew, Noah, Logan, Kortnee, Natalie, Kaylee and Emily Grace.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. today, May 15, 2008, at Lewis & Ferguson Funeral Home in Sandy Hook. Burial will be in Yatesville Memorial Park.

Friends may call after 9 a.m. today at the funeral home.



Melvin Duerk - 1921-2008

Melvin Duerk, 86, of Russell, died Tuesday in Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital.

He was born Oct. 12, 1921.

His wife, June Miller Duerk, survives.

A graveside service will be at 10 a.m. today at Bellefonte Memorial Gardens in Flatwoodsm with military rites by the Ironton VFW.

There will be no visitation.

Evans Funeral Home in Raceland is in charge of arrangements.



Lillian Rice

Lillian James Rice, 80, of Olive Hill, died Wednesday at her residence.

Her husband, Donald Carl Rice, preceded her in death.

Globe Funeral Chapel in Olive Hill is in charge of arrangements, which are pending.



Darrell Black - 1969-2008

Darrell Keith Black, 39, of Owingsville, died Monday in St. Claire Regional Medical Center in Morehead.

He was born April 30, 1969.

The funeral was at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals in Morehead. Burial was in Black Cemetery.

Delma Austin - 1915-2008

Delma Gertrude Cline Jones Austin, 92, of Lafayette, Calif., died Oct. 26.

She was born May 11, 1915. Two husbands, Ottis Woodrow Jones and Herman Austin, preceded her in death.

The funeral will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Cranston Cemetery.

There will be no visitation.

Marion Kinsel - 1923-2008

Marion D. Kinsel, 85, of Vanceburg, died Tuesday in King’s Daughters Medical Center.

She was born Jan. 19, 1923, in Logan, W.Va.

Her husband, Louis Kinsel, died in 1979.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at Gaydos Funeral Home in Vanceburg. Burial will be in Waring Cemetery in Garrison.

Friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday and after 8 a.m. Sunday at the funeral home.



Robert Holbrook - 1920-2008

Robert B. Holbrook, 87, of South Point, died Tuesday at his residence.

He was born Sept. 23, 1920, in Sciotoville.

His wife, June Legg Holbrook, survives.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Tracy Brammer Funeral Home in Ironton. Burial will be in Buckeye Cemetery in Scioto County, with military rites by VFW Post 8850.

Friends may call an hour before services at the funeral home.

Lillie Shepherd - 1922-2008

Lillie Shepherd, 85, of West Portsmouth, died Wednesday in Golden Years Convalescent Center.

She was born June 7, 1922, in West Portsmouth.

Her husband, Dinges Shepherd, preceded her in death.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Roger W. Davis Funeral Home in West Portsmouth. Burial will be in Sunset Gardens.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday and an hour before services Saturday at the funeral home.
