Ella Mae Rice

Ella Mae Rice, 88, of 12436 Kelly Drive, Ashland, Ky., was born in Greenup County, Ky., to the late Thomas Jefferson and Cindy Lou Crisp.

She was married to the late Everett Ross and together they had a daughter, the late Brenda Spears. Later, she married the late Martin L. Rice and they had two daughters by whom she is survived, Yvonne Bell (Bob) of Ashland and Sylvia Negrete (the late Philip Negrete) of Tampa, Fla. For the past 24 years, she made her home with her daughter, Yvonne, and her family. Mother shared with her family many wonderful memories of growing up in Greenup County during the 1920s and 1930s. Included in these memories was attending school and being a student of the well-known author, Jesse Stuart. During the late 1940s and 1950s, she was employed at KDMC as a nurse’s aide. As her family grew, she worked as a saleslady for Amana Freezers and received national recognition for top sales lady of the year. She and her late husband, Martin Rice, also owned their own business of sewing machine and vacuum cleaner sales and repairs. During her life, she was a devoted mother and grandmother, her family being her primary focus. She was baptized in 1986 by the Rev. Walter Wilcox and attended Trace Wesleyan Methodist Church.

Also preceding her in death were three brothers, Orville, Alden and Bascom Crisp, and a sister, Imogene Crisp.

She is survived by seven siblings, Ada Rucker and Sarah Hutchinson and Dennie, Edgar and Arthur Crisp, all of Ashland, and Thelma Jenkins and Belvia Jennings, both of Beavercreek, Ohio. Grandchildren include Althea Elliott, Aaron and Andrei Spears, Gary Chaney, Justin Bell, Michael and Ryan Davis, Latosha Negrete and Maureen Negrete Brinkman; and great-grandchildren are Annmarie Elliott, Cole, Brett and Brice Chaney, Mike, Christian, Nathan, Josh, Tristin and Cameron Davis and Heather, Megan and Kayte Brinkman.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today, May 13, at Lazear Funeral Home, 1632 Central Ave., Ashland. Funeral services will be officiated by the Rev. Walter Wilcox at noon Wednesday, May 14 at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Ella Mae’s grandchildren, Michael, Ryan, Gary, Justin, Aaron and Latosha. Honorary pallbearers will be George Spears and Steve Elliott.

Interment will be in Rose Hill Burial Park.

In addition to flowers, donations may be made to Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland.



Edna B. Kouns - 1919-2008

Edna B. Kouns, 88, of Ashland, Ky., died Saturday afternoon, May 10, 2008, in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland.

She was born July 15, 1919, in Decatur, Ill., the daughter of the late Andrew and Ida Mae Silvus Mitchell. She was the wife of the late Cecil Willard Kouns.

She was of the Nazarene faith and a devoted homemaker.

Surviving are three sons, Charles Robert Kouns and his wife, Debra Lynn, Cecil Edward Kouns and his wife, Glema, and Gerald Wayne Kouns and his wife, Betty, all of Ashland; two daughter, Norma Jean Barker and her husband, Clarence Elwood, and Ida Rose Bostick and her husband, Gary, all of Ashland; 14 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. today, May 13, 2008, at Steen Funeral Home-Marshall Steen Chapel in Ashland by Pastor Donny McKenzie. Burial will be in Kouns Family Cemetery.

Mildred Gibson Jackson - 1927-2008

Mildred Gibson Jackson, 81, of Westwood, passed away Monday, May 12 in King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland.

Mrs. Jackson was born May 12, 1927, in Fultz, Ky., a daughter of the late Joe and Ruth Gibson. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence E. Jackson Sr., in 2003 and her brother, Joe Paul Gibson.

She was a resident of Westwood for 56 years, an employee of the Fairview Independent School District for 26 years and loved to quilt, listen to country music and spend time with her beloved grandchildren.

She is survived by three sons, Lawrence E. Jr. (Sandy) Jackson of Ashland, Keith D. Jackson of Evansville, Ind., and Kevin M. (Niona) Jackson of Russell; two daughters, Mary Lou (Mike) Childers of Winchester and Carla D. (Allen) Thomas of Ashland; a sister, Geneva (George) Mayberry of Winchester; two brothers, John C. (Sue) Gibson of Grayson and Charles E. (Laverne) Gibson of Flatwoods; a sister-in-law, Anna Gibson of Flatwoods; seven grandchildren, Nikki (Roger) Crossnoe, Tara (Rob) Kersey, Jami (Mark) Rogers, Kevin (Laura) Childers and Jessica, Brad and Allen Thomas Jr.; and eight great-grandchildren; Nathan Crossnoe, Gracyn Rogers, Quenton and Brodie Kersey, Robbie Jr. and Dalton Kersey and Tanner and Mackenzie Thomas.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 15 at Sparks Funeral Home in Grayson. Burial will be in Littleton-Carroll Cemetery at Fultz.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, May 14 at the funeral home.

Lawrence Denver Porter - 1933-2008

Lawrence Denver Porter, 75, of Hitchins, Ky., passed away on Sunday, May 11, 2008, in King’s Daughters Medical Center.

He was born March 14, 1933, at Dobbins in Elliott County, Ky., a son of the late John “Willy” and Marjorie Faye Fraiser Porter.

He was retired from General Refractories in Hitchins.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Aaron Porter; a sister, Mrytle Jean Johnson; and two brothers, Ward Porter and Royce Porter.

His survivors include his wife of 52 years, Dolly Marshall Porter of Hitchins; children Paul (Linda) Porter of Grayson, Ky., Ruth Ann Martin of Clearwater, Fla., Mike (Denise) Porter of Grayson, Rick (Teresa) Porter of Ashland, Ky., Andy (Veronica) Porter of Grayson and Gary (Tammy) Porter of Fallsburg, Ky.; three sisters, Wanda (Tommy) Wells of Vermillion, Ohio, Christine Cooper of Grayson and Joyce (Milton) Ratcliff of Willard; two brothers, Rex (Mary Karen) Porter and John “Trigger” (Sandy) Porter, both of Willard, Ky.; grandchildren Marcus, Cassandra, Dustin, Travis, Katyn, Abby, Hope, Caleb, Cody, Whitney, Blake, Josh, Alli, Chrissy and Trevor; great-grandchildren Matthew, Jade, Austin, Dean, Brittani and Tabby; and a host of family and friends who will mourn his passing.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 14, 2008, at Malone Funeral Home in Grayson by Rick Porter and Tim Hall, ministers. Burial will be in Porter Family Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today and after 9 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

George Eldridge - 1925-2008

George Eldridge, 82, of Ashland, Ky., formerly of Elliott County, passed away Sunday, May 11, 2008, in King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland.

He was born Aug. 5, 1925, in Elliott County, the son of the late Frank and Lissie Gilliam Eldridge. He was also preceded in death by brothers and sisters Delphia Keeton, Jay Eldridge, Belle Lewis and Doc Con Eldridge.

He was of the Baptist faith and a former foundry operator at the Dalton Foundry in Warsaw, Ind.

He is survived by a sister, Arlene Gilliam of Louisa, Ky., and a host of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Lewis & Ferguson Funeral Home in Sandy Hook. Burial will be in Elliott County Memory Gardens.

Friends may call after 6 p.m. today at the funeral home.



James Queen

James Roger Queen, 64, of West Portsmouth, Obhio, died Monday in Hospice of Southern Ohio Medical Center in Portsmouth, Ohio.

Gertie Dickison

Gertie Dickison, of New Carlisle, Ohio, died Sunday at her residence.

Oney-Henderson Funeral Home in Olive Hill is in charge of arrangements, which are pending.



Golda DeRossett - 1929-2008

Golda Mae Jones DeRossett, 79, of Grethel, died Friday in Pikeville.

She was born April 7, 1929, in Pikeville.

The funeral will be at noon today at Hall Funeral Home in Martin. Burial will be in Davidson Memorial Gardens in Ivel.



Harry Crace

Harry Wilson Crace, 86, of Oil Springs, died Sunday.

His wife, Veva Mae Crace, survives.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. today at Oil Springs United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Highland Memorial Park in Staffordsville, with military rites by Disabled American Veterans Chapter 18 of Auxier.

Friends may call after 9 a.m. today at Paintsville Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the church.



Kathleen Bailey - 1974-2008

Kathleen Lynn Bailey, 33, of Carlisle, died Friday in Nicholas County.

She was born July 30, 1974, in Johnson County.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Magoffin County Funeral Home in Salyersville. Burial will be in Bailey Cemetery in Salt Lick.

Mortie Shepherd - 1910-2008

Mortie Shepherd, 97, of Claypool, Ind., died Sunday at his residence.

He was born July 26, 1910, in David.

His wife, Lola Allen Shepherd, died in 1987.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Hall Funeral Home in Martin. Burial will be in Richmond Memorial Park in Prestonsburg.

Ruby Salyer

Ruby Salyer, 73, of Flatgap, died Saturday.

Her husband, Hobert Salyer, survives.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. today at Flatgap Baptist Church. Burial will be in Sparks Cemetery in Sitka.

William “Bill” Runnels Jr. - 1933-2008

William Pierce “Bill” Runnels Jr., 74, of Prestonsburg, died Saturday in University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington.

He was born May 31, 1933.

His wife, Ruth Joy Runnels, survives.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Carter Funeral Home in Prestonsburg. Burial will be in Davidson Memorial Gardens in Ivel.

Walter Coleman

Walter R. Coleman, 59, of Pikeville, died Wednesday.

Dollie Blevins Dennis, 86, of Fairborn, Ohio, formerly of West Liberty, died Sunday in Fairborn.

Her husband, Jasper Dennis, preceded her in death.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Herald & Stewart & Halsey Funeral Home in West Liberty. Burial will be in Elam Cemetery in West Liberty.

Louise Green - 1929-2008

Louise Green, 78, of Franklin Furnace, died Saturday in Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus.

She was born May 15, 1929, in Lawrence County.

Her husband, William Green, preceded her in death.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Brown Funeral Chapel in Ironton. Burial will be in Haverhill Cemetery in Franklin Furnace.
