Gerald B. Wurts Jr. (1955-2008)

Gerald B. Wurts Jr., beloved son of Ann Wurts and the late Gerald B. Wurts Sr., passed away Monday, April 5, 2008, in the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Huntington, W.Va.

He was born March 19, 1955, in Boyd County, Ky.

Survivors include brothers Bruce Wurts and Bill Wurts and wife Tammy, all of Ashland, Ky.; sister Jo Ellen Lyons of Ashland; a daughter, Shelby Wurts of Ashland; a son, Chris Yingling and wife Donna of Palm Springs, Calif.; grandchildren Jadyn Rojas of Ashland, Christopher, Christina and Matthew Yingling, all of Palm Springs, and Gerald B. Wurts III of Columbia, Ga.; and nephews Brandon Wurts and Rikki Wurts, both of Ashland. Also surviving are Dee Wurts of Ashland.

A memorial will be for friends and family at the home of Bill and Tammy Wurts at 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 7.



Kathleen Sue “Snooky” Shelton (1938-2008)

Kathleen Sue “Snooky” Shelton, 69, of Westwood, wife of Brady Shelton, died Sunday afternoon in King’s Daughters Medical Center following an extended illness.

Snooky was born June 9, 1938, in Ashland, Ky., a daughter of the late Ivan and Leota Lewis Robbins.

She was also preceded in death by a sister, Mary Carroll.

She was of the Baptist faith and enjoyed get-togethers with family and friends and playing Bunko.

Surviving, in addition to her husband, are two sons, Charles Ray Shelton and wife Pamela of Westwood and Brady Lee Shelton and Marty of Westwood; a daughter, Michelle Rene and husband Randall Spears of Westwood; two sisters, Shirley Terry and husband Vernon of Ashland and Rita Caskey and husband Linville of Summit; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; and two stepgreat-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Preston Family Funeral Home in Ashland by Brother Tim Holmes. Interment will be in Dixon Cemetery in Westwood.

Visitation will be after noon Wednesday at the funeral home.

Dr. Charles R. “Doc” Conley (1922-2008)

Dr. Charles R. “Doc” Conley, 84, of Greenup, Ky., started his new life with our creator on Monday, May 5, 2008, in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland, Ky.

He was born Dec. 12, 1922, in Salyersville, Ky., a son of the late Charles F. and Grace Barnett Conley.

Doc came to Greenup in 1956 as a graduate of the Chicago School of Osteopathic Medicine. He practiced family medicine 51 years. He was named physician of the year by the KOMA and received many recognitions from the medical community for his outstanding service and compassion for his patients. He worked as a physician for the Greenup Health Department and the Greenup County Detention Center. Since coming to Greenup he was a member of Greenup First United Methodist Church, where he served as a Sunday school teacher, was chairman of the board and sang in the choir. He enjoyed monthly meetings and frying hamburgers for the Greenup Lions Club, where he received the Melvin Jones Fellow award. He was a member of the Paintsville chapter of the Masons. He was a volunteer ringside physician for Golden Gloves boxing and a World War II Air Force veteran.

He was preceded in death by a wife, Kathryn “Kitty” Sargent Conley; a daughter-in-law, Phyllis Simmons Conley; a granddaughter, Amy Callihan Young; a grandson, Michael Casey Zank; and his best friend and loyal dog, Hugo.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia Salyers Conley of Greenup; three sons, Dr. Charles L. “Butch” Conley of Brandenburg, Ky., Greg Adams of Wurtland, Ky., and Gary Adams of Greenup; three daughters, Cathy (Burton) Young of Murray, Ky., Gail (Ed) Gullett of Augusta, Ga., and Greta (Tim) Holmes of Westwood, Ky.; nine grandchildren, Dr. Charles L. “Chip” (Melissa) Conley of Ashland, Stephanie (Chad) Woolsey and Ryan (Kellie) Conley, both of Brandenburg, Amanda Adams of South Shore, Ky., Charlsie Young of Murray, Cassie Zank of Augusta and Abby Holmes, Gracie Holmes and Nate Holmes, all of Westwood; six great-grandchildren, Noell Conley, Shelby Conley, Andee Conley and Walker Conley, all of Ashland, and Awsten Gillum and Jarid Gillum, both of South Shore, Ky.; a special stepdaughter, Mona (Robert) Maranville of Lexington, Ky.; and a stepgrandson, Vince Maranville of Lexington.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 8, 2008, at Greenup First United Methodist Church by his son-in-law, Pastor Tim Holmes. Burial will be in Bellefonte Memorial Gardens in Flatwoods, Ky.

Friends may call from 4 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and an hour before services Thursday at the church..

Ruby Marcum (1935-2008)

Ruby Marcum, 72, of Grayson, Ky., went to be with her Lord on Sunday, May 4, 2008, in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland, Ky.

She was born May 19, 1935, in Hitchins, Ky., a daughter of the late Steve and Julia Mae Grizzell Sagraves.

She was a homemaker and a born-again Christian.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Margaret Todd.

Her survivors include her husband, Fred S. Marcum Sr. of Grayson; two sons and daughters-in-law, Fred “Butch” Jr. and Vickie Marcum and Kevin and Joyce Marcum, all of Grayson; two sisters, Avenel Harper and Juanita Lindsey of Grayson; four brothers, Joe Sagraves, Paul Seagraves, Don Seagraves and Harlan Seagraves, all of Grayson; three grandchildren, Heather Wages, Justin Marcum and Summer Marcum, all of Grayson; and a great-grandson, Tyler Wages.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 7, 2008, at Malone Funeral Home in Grayson by Terry Dean and Russell Griffith, ministers. Burial will be in East Carter County Memory Gardens.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today and after 9 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Lillie Opal Robertson Haney

Lillie Opal Robertson Haney, 71, of Carter City, departed this life on May 5, 2008, after an extended illness.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Arch and Lillie Robertson; husbands Tillman Haney and Clyde Haney; her brothers, Clifford, Raymond, Walter, Arch Jr., Harold, James and Delbert Robertson and Wilson Moore; and a sister, Minnie Inice Robertson.

She is survived, besides her beloved Jim Hall, by her brothers, Ewing Robertson of Upper Sandusky, Ohio, Earnest Robertson of Okeechobee, Fla., and Edgar Robertson of Phoenix, Ariz.; her sisters, Emma Rhoden of Florida, Margaret McBride of Linden, Tenn., Christine Schenk of Upper Sandusky and Meretia Wolf of Greenup, Ky.; three sons, Edward (Tammy) Haney, Richard Haney and Kevin (Selena) Haney, all of Carter City; two daughters, Lillie (Ronnie) Hall of Hitchins, Ky., and Gail (John) Caudill of Carter City; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was a member of Maranatha Bible Church in Webbville, Ky.

Viewing will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, May 7 at Malone Funeral Home in Grayson, Ky. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 8 at Maranatha Bible Church by Jesse Fyffe and Steve Owen.

Viewing will begin at 11 a.m. Thursday at the church. Burial will be in Marantha Bible Church Cemetery to await the Resurrection.



William Ratliff

William C. Ratliff, 85, of South Shore, died Monday in Southern Ohio Medical Center in Portsmouth, Ohio.

Ruth Dixon (1925-2008)

Ruth Whoberry Dixon, 82, of Portsmouth, died Monday in Hempstead Manor in Portsmouth.

She was born Dec. 8, 1925, in Bloomington, Ind.

Her husband, George Dixon, died in 1997.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Roberson Funeral Home in South Shore. Burial will be in Mount Zion Cemetery in South Shore.

Friends may call after 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.



Orville “Gene” Brown (1941-2008)

Orville Eugene “Gene” Brown, 67, of Olive Hill, died Sunday.

He was born March 20, 1941, in Carter County.

Rosella “Babe” Conn Fitzpatrick, 82, of Morehead, died Monday in St. Claire Regional Medical Center in Morehead.

She was born March 19, 1926.

Her husband, Dave Fitzpatrick, preceded her in death.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. today at Herald & Stewart & Halsey Funeral Home in West Liberty. Burial will be in Joe Amos Smith Cemetery in West Liberty.



Kermit Day (1934-2008)

Kermit B. Day, 73, of West Liberty, died Monday in Morgan County Appalachian Regional Hospital in West Liberty.

He was born Sept. 12, 1934, in West Liberty.

His wife, Emma Johnson Day, preceded him in death.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Potter Funeral Home in West Liberty. Burial will be in Johnson Cemetery in West Liberty.

Ruby Cooper

Ruby F. Cooper, of Cincinnati, formerly of Morehead, died Sunday in Mercy Hospital-Mount Airy in Cincinnati.

Her husband, David Malone, preceded her in death.
