Gladys Lake - 1025-2008
Gladys M. Lake, 82, of Ashland, died Sunday, May 4, 2008, in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland.
She was born Aug. 4, 1925, in Van Lear, the daughter of the late Roy and Georgia Murray. She was the wife of the late Thomas A. Lake, who passed away on Aug. 27, 1985.
She was employed by the C.H. Parsons Co. as a credit manager and was a 1943 graduate of Ashland High School.
She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Richard Murray and Roy Murray Jr.
Survivors include a son, Patrick Roy Lake of Henderson; a daughter-in-law, Sally Lake of Newburgh, Ind.; a daughter, Andrea Dean Lake of Ashland; two grandchildren, Erin Beth Weibert of Evansville, Ind., and Ryan Lake of Nashville, Tenn.; three great-grandchildren, John, Benjamin and Katie Weibert; and a sister, Hazel Murray Castle of Paintsville.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Ashland Cemetery by Pastor Perry Young.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Lazear Funeral Home in Ashland.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, the American Red Cross, Hospice Community Services, the American Heart Association or South Ashland United Methodist Church.
Earmlie Archey - 1933-2008
Earmlie Gamble Archey, 74, went to be with her Lord and Savior on May 3, 2008, after a long illness.
Born Aug. 1, 1933, in Hitchins, she was the beloved youngest child of William J. “Jimmie” Gamble and Stella Jackson Gamble. She graduated from Thomas R. Brown High School with the Class of 1951. Earmlie’s stories of her childhood adventures and misadventures were well known and greatly enjoyed by her family.
On July 3, 1954, she married Fred L. Archey, her husband of 40 years and the love of her life. He preceded her in death on May 18, 1995. She counted her greatest life accomplishment as being a devoted and loving wife and mother. Together, she and her family embarked on numerous vacation trips throughout the United States and several foreign countries.
Earmlie was a devout Christian and an inspired church worker. For many years, she was a Sunday school teacher and was heavily involved with vacation Bible school. She was a volunteer at Camp Caleb near Prestonsburg.
She was a talented seamstress who sewed everything from wedding gowns to prize-winning quilts. She was a creative crafter. Family and friends all highly prized the hand-crafted items they received from her, especially the Christmas ornaments. Earmlie also happily taught others how they too could make things of beauty. She was truly an inspiration to all.
Left to cherish her memory are two sons, U.S. Navy Capt. Richard Archey, his wife, Wilma, and their son, Jeremy; Mark Archey, his wife, Hsiao Feng, and their children, Matthew, Sharon, Charlotte and Timothy of Taipei, Taiwan; a sister, Delores “Tommy” Baker, and her husband, William, of Ashland; a brother, Donald “Bood” Gamble, and his wife, Dorothy “Midge” of Frenchburg; three brothers-in-law, Kenneth Archey of Washington and Gene T. Archey and James Archey, both of Greenup; and a sister-in-law, Anna Hill of Houston, Texas. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews and their families, all of whom she loved as much as if they were her own children.
The family would like to acknowledge the wonderful care provided by the doctors and other health-care professionals during Earmlie’s long illness. The family is also appreciative of her friends and church family who were always there for her.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 6, 2008, at New Buckley Road Freewill Baptist Church by the Rev. Bill Smith, the Rev. Charles Powers and the Rev. Kenny Ball. Burial will be in Bellefonte Memorial Gardens in Flatwoods.
Family will receive friends and visitors from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Steen Funeral Home-Marshall Steen Chapel and after noon Tuesday at the church.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Camp Caleb. Checks can be mailed to 804 James St., Flatwoods, KY 41139.

Charles Meeks - 1941-2008
Charles Franklin Meeks, 66, of Palmetto, Fla., formerly of Ashland, passed away Friday, May 2, 2008, at his home.
Charles was born Oct. 2, 1941, in Boyd County, the son of the late Chester and Sarah Huffman Meeks.
Charles was a veteran who served his country proudly in the U.S. Army. He was a welder with National Mine Service Co., retiring in 1986 after 20 years of service.
Charles is survived by his loving wife of 39 years, Bonnie Grayson Meeks of Palmetto; a son, Charles Franklin Meeks Jr., and his wife, Marisel, of Bradenton, Fla.; four brothers, Raymond Meeks, David Meeks and Richard Meeks, all of Ashland, and Timothy Gene Meeks of Bradenton; a sister, Roseann DeLong of Pedro, Ohio; a grandson, Ronnie Meeks; numerous nieces and nephews; and extended family and friends.
Funeral services will be at 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 6, 2008, at Caniff Funeral Home in Westwood by Bill Dillon, minister. Burial will be in Grayson Cemetery.

Hazel Allen - 1918-2008
The family of Hazel Marie Grubb (Burcham) Allen wish to celebrate her life upon her passage to another world.
She was born on Dec. 29, 1918, at Catlettsburg, and died on May 3, 2008, in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland. She was the daughter of the late Silas Franklin Grubb and the late Nancy Ann Crank Grubb.
Hazel was also preceded in death by two husbands, Paul Allen of Catlettsburg and Ollie Burcham of Huntington, W.Va.; a daughter, Sherian Ann Allen; and two brothers, Alfred F. Grubb and Clare Junion Yazel.
Hazel is survived by her son, Paul Thomas Allen Jr., and his wife, Carol K. Allen; five grandchildren, Michelle Dawn McClain and her husband, Danny McClain, Alicia Renee Clay and her husband, Michael Clay, Rebekkah Colleen Fagnano and her husband, Enrico Fagnano, Paul Thomas Allen III, and his wife, Monica Diez, and Sean Aaron Allen and his wife, Amanda Allen; nine great-grandchildren, Amber Lynn McClain, Andrew William McClain, Joseph Christopher McClain, Heather Rose McClain, Bradley Michael McClain, Mikey Allen Clay, Cody Allen Clay, Sharian Nicole Fagnano and Ethan Ryan Fagnano.
She is also survived by a stepson, James Milton Allen, his wife, Carol Faye Stith Allen, and their children, Debra Lynn Pauley and her husband, Warren, LaDonna Sue Wheeler and her husband, Charles, James Milton Allen Jr. and his wife, Jessica, Mark Anthony Allen and Jonda Lee Allen and their descendants.
Ms. Allen is also survived by a brother, John C. Grubb and his wife, Margaret, and their descendants. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Hazel was affectionately known by her family as Mamma. She was a woman whose capacity for love was unlimited. She never saw a child who she did not love nor a soul she did not heal. With her passage from this life, she has moved on to care for those children who may need her in her future world. Although there may be mothers in this and her new world, she was, is and will always be something special, a mommy.
With the dedication of her burial site at Catlettsburg Cemetery by her minister from the Catlettsburg Church of God, her physical body may be at rest in holy ground, but her life is enshrined in the hearts, minds, lives and souls of those who knew and loved her.
A committal service will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 6, 2008, at Catlettsburg Cemetery by Pastor Steve Mays.
Kilgore & Collier Funeral Home in Catlettsburg is in charge of arrangements.
Ola Reynolds - 1925-2008
Ola Middleton Reynolds, 82, of Olive Hill, passed away Friday, May 2, 2008, in St. Claire Regional Medical Center in Morehead.
She was born Sept. 3, 1925, in Elliott County, the daughter of the late Robert and Anna Stevens Middleton.
Surviving are her three sons, Fearl Reynolds, Larry (Teresa) Reynolds and Wesley Reynolds, all of Olive Hill; three daughters, Earlene Gollihue of Olive Hill, Sharon (David) Young of Chester, W.Va., and Brenda Reynolds of Olive Hill; two brothers, Gene (Ester) Middleton and Cledith (Helen) Middleton, both of Olive Hill; four sisters, Sellar Offill, Minnie Barker, Nola Clark and Monnie (Wayne) Mabry; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; a special family member, Stacy Caudill; and an honorary granddaughter, Kimber Rayburn.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Reynolds was preceded in death by her husband, Clifford Reynolds; four daughters, Linda Reynolds, Joyce Richmond and infants Sheila and Janet Reynolds; two brothers, Lloyd Middleton and Arnold Middleton; a sister, Ella Adkins; and a grandson, Chris Richmond.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Oney-Henderson Funeral Home in Olive Hill by Eury Barker, J.D. Riggs, Clayton Marshall and James Bawcum. Burial will be in Binion Cemetery.
Friends may call after 9 a.m. today at the funeral home.
Kathleen “Snooky” Shelton - 1938-2008
Kathleen Sue “Snooky” Shelton, 69, of Westwood, died Sunday in King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland.

Richard Reese - 1921-2008
Richard Leroy Reese, 86, of Greenup, died Saturday at his residence.
He was born Oct. 6, 1921, in Dixon, Ill.
There will be no funeral services.

Orville Eugene “Gene” Brown, 67, of Olive Hill, died Sunday at the residence of his son.

Edna Everman, 69, of Ashland, died Saturday at her residence.
She was born June 22, 1938, in Vanceburg.

Thurman Tackett
Thurman Tackett, 65, of Staffordsville, died Friday in Paul B. Hall Regional Medical Center.
His wife, Jerri Blevins Tackett, survives.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. today at Jones-Preston Funeral Chapel in Paintsville. Burial will be in Highland Memorial Park in Staffordsville.

Karl Kegley - 1919-2008
Karl Kegley, 88, of Lewis County, died Saturday in Southern Ohio Medical Center in Portsmouth.
He was born July 22, 1919, in Stricklett.
