William “Hugh” Overcash (1926-2009)

William “Hugh” Overcash, 83, of Knoxville, Tenn., and a resident of Hillcrest West Nursing Home, passed away Saturday, May 2, 2009.

Hugh was born on Feb. 7, 1926, on a “mill hill” in Troutman, N.C., to the late Jettie Lippard Overcash Gunnell and William Franklin Overcash. He grew up in the Troutman-Statesville area of North Carolina and graduated from Troutman High School.

During World War II he joined the United States Navy at the age of 17 with his mother authorizing his early enlistment. He trained as a radio operator “sparky” and served on the USS Brennen (DE 13) and USS Major (DE796), where he assisted in hunting German U-boats operating off the Atlantic coast and Caribbean. He achieved the rank of radioman second class and later taught radio school.

During the Korean War he was called to duty and served nine months in Yokohama, Japan. He was honorably discharged twice from service with the United States Navy — in 1946 and 1950. In his retirement, he spent much time assisting and participating in events hosted by his past shipmates of the USS Major.

After his service to the United States, he attended the University of Tennessee, ultimately receiving three degrees — B.S. in business (1949), M.S. in accounting (1952) and a J.D. in 1951. At UT College of Law he was a member of the Tennessee Law Review and the Order of the Coif.

While at UT he met the eye of a young lady working at the campus library, Myra Anne Black. They married on Dec. 27, 1950, in the Old James White Fort (then owned by Ms. Black’s parents). There were two children of the marriage, Wendell H. Overcash of Goshen, Ky., and Whitney J. Overcash of Louisville..

Hugh later attended New York University and completed his LLM (taxation) in 1963. Hugh worked for many of America’s finest corporations as tax counsel, including: Ross Brothers, American Can, United States Steel, Atlas Chemical, North American Rockwell, Ashland Oil and Georgia Pacific. He served in many capacities and retired in 1993 as director of international taxation for Georgia Pacific.

He was a member of the American Bar Association, the Tennessee Bar Association and the Knoxville Bar Association. He was admitted to practice law in the following federal courts: Eastern District of Tennessee, Sixth Circuit and the United States Supreme Court. He was a member of Delta Sigma Pi and active in the Tax Executive Institute and the Historical Society for the Eastern District of Tennessee.

He had many interests, but two of greatest importance outside the family were the USS Major reunion group and, of course, UT football. He contributed generously to UT and established one of the largest funded scholarships at its law school and a similar scholarship at Myra’s alma mater, Carson Newman College.

Hugh was preceded in death by his loving wife of 53 years; by all three brothers, Billy Ray Overcash, Willard N. Overcash and Walker J. Overcash; and a sister, Ruby O. Hutchinson.

He is survived by a sister, Francis B. Overcash; sons and a daughter-in-law Wendell H. and Joanne L. Overcash and Whitney J. Overcash; granddaughters Holly A. Overcash of Danville and Erin R. Overcash of Goshen; and brother-in-law Martin Black and his wife, Mary, of Ann Arbor, Mich. He leaves behind many nieces, nephews, cousins, acquaintances and friends, all of whom think highly of him and benefited greatly from his wise counsel, generosity and highly developed sense of humor.

The family is very grateful to the staff of Hillcrest West Nursing Home and the University of Tennessee Medical Center for their dedication, assistance and loving care.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Rose Mortuary Broadway Chapel by the Rev. James McTyre. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday and 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the mortuary at 1421 N. Broadway Knoxville, TN 37917.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Lake Hills Presbyterian Church, 3805 Maloney Road, Knoxville, TN 37920.

Condolences may be sent to rosemortuary.com.
