Joseph B. Cartwright - 1909-2008
Joseph B. Cartwright, a former Ashland Ky., police officer who was instrumental in establishing pension rights for Kentucky’s police officers, died April 28 at a Florida nursing home. He was 99.
As president of the Kentucky Fraternal Order of Police in 1959, he pushed for and helped win passage of legislation giving police officers in Kentucky retirement security for the first time. He helped found the Ashland FOP lodge and was part of Chandler’s security escort whenever the governor was in eastern Kentucky.
Mr. Cartwright also made an unsuccessful run for Boyd County sheriff in the late 1960s. He was a founding manager of Ashland’s Babe Ruth League and his team, the FOP Reds, won the inaugural year. He was a lifetime member of the Ashland Elks lodge and operated Cartwright Driving School from the late 1950s through early 1970s. He was an avid golfer and owned racing greyhounds in his retirement. He loved card games and swapping funny police and sports stories.
Mr. Cartwright, the son of the late Charles Chase and Maude Virginia Bonham Cartwright, was born Jan. 14, 1909, in Bristol, Va., but was raised in Ashland. He was a 1928 graduate of Ashland High School and graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1932. He served on the Ashland Police Department for almost 30 years and retired with the rank of captain. He moved to Holiday, Fla., in 1979.
He was the husband of the late Louise Riddell Cartwright and was preceded in death by his brother, Charles W. Cartwright ,and sister, Mary Catherine VanHorne. Survivors include three sons, Joe B. Cartwright Jr. (Helen) of Ashland, Robert C. Cartwright (Mindy A.) of Howard, Ga., and Randy Cartwright (Pam) of Holiday; a daughter, Sue Cartwright of Holiday; four grandchildren, Kelly Jo Cartwright Morman of North Carolina and Alex, Kaitie and Charles Cartwright of Howard.
Services will be today, April 30, at 10 a.m. at Dobies Funeral Home, 4910 Bartelt Road, Holiday. Burial will be in Meadowlawn Memorial Gardens.

Wilson Reeves - 1925-2008
Wilson L. Reeves of Ashland rests peacefully with his Savior following his passing late Sunday evening, April 27, 2008, in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland.
Mr. Reeves was 82 years of age, born Sept. 6, 1925, in Fleming County, Ky., a son of the late Clifford and Mae Lawrence Reeves. His wife, Jean T. Whitley Reeves, preceded him in death in 2004. He attended Berea College, was employed for 40 years as an operator with Honeywell/Allied Chemical in Ironton, Ohio, and was a member of First Baptist Church of Cannonsburg. Wilson was an avid amateur radio operator and collected unique and original recordings, with an extensive library of old-time and mountain music.
Wilson leaves behind three sons, Cecil Reeves and Michael Reeves, both of Somerset, Ky., and Billy Reeves of Ashland; a brother, Earl Reeves of Flemingsburg, Ky; and two sisters, Evelyn McVey and Dorothy Conley, both of Flemingsburg.
A funeral service in memory of Wilson Reeves will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 1, 2008, at First Baptist Church of Cannonsburg. Words of comfort and inspiration will be offered by Pastor Stan Williams. Final rest will be in Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens in Ashland.
Those wishing to call on the Reeves family may do so between the hours of 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Thursday at the church.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to the First Baptist Church of Cannonsburg Building Fund, 11512 Midland Trail Road, Ashland, KY 41102.

Erwin “Stu” Davidson - 1926-2008
Erwin “Stu” Davidson, 81, of Salem, Va., formerly of Ashland, passed from this life on Monday, April 28, 2008, at his residence.
He was born June 5, 1926, in Wise County Va., the son of the late Garrett and Pearl Baker Davidson.
Preceding him in death were his wife, Helen McCoy Davidson; two brothers, Garrett H. Davidson and Colbert “Dave” Davidson; and a sister, Beulah June Hamilton.
Survivors include his son, Philip E. Davidson of North Wilkesboro, N.C.; two sisters, Pauline Dockery of Wise, Va., and Mary Evelyn Mullins of Roanoke, Va.; three grandchildren, Jo Ellen Southworth of Lexington, Ky., Kelli Vought of Lake City, Fla., and Tara Beth Davidson of Versailles, Ky.; and four great-grandchildren.
He was retired from C&O Railroad as a brakeman and from the U.S. Postal Service as a mail carrier.
He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy, stationed on the USS Walter B. Cobb.
Friends may call from 6:30 to 8 p.m. today, April 30, 2008, at Miller Funeral Home in Ashland.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 1, 2008, at Miller Funeral Home by Randy Hamilton. Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park.
Steven Smith - 1957-2008
Steven F. Smith, 50, of Ashland, passed away Monday evening, April 28, 2008, at his residence.
Mr. Smith was born June 16, 1957, in Ashland, Ky., a son of the late Robert “Red” and Neva Stapleton Smith. He was a window treatment installer in Florida, a clerk with the Destin Paint Store in Destin, Fla., and was previously employed with AK Steel Coke Plant and CSX Railroad. Steven was a quiet and solitary man, short on words, but long on patience and slow to anger. He will be missed deeply by family and friends.
Steve sadly leaves behind his family — a brother, Robert Keith Smith and his wife, Becky, of Pickerington, Ohio; a sister, Kathy Smith Filkins of Point Pleasant, W.Va.; nieces and nephews Jonathan W. Smith of Wilmington, N.C., Robert C. Smith of Baltimore, Md., and Ashlee N. Filkins and Shane K. Filkins, both of Point Pleasant; two special friends, Sarah Ball Brandal and Dean Carrico; and a host of extended family.
A funeral service for Steve will be at noon Thursday, May 1, 2008, at Kilgore & Collier Funeral Home on Panola Street in Catlettsburg. Words of comfort will be offered by Pastor Jim Mitchell.
Final rest to be beside his mom and dad at Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens in Ashland.
Those wishing to pay respects to the Smith family may do so between the hours of 10:30 a.m. and noon Thursday at the funeral home.
Charlotte Davis - 1934-2008
Charlotte Fay Wright Haynes Davis, 73, of Westwood, passed away on April 29, 2008, in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland.
She was born Dec. 19, 1934, in Louisa, a daughter of the late Dolly and Epp Wright. She was predeceased by her first husband, Thomas C. Haynes, of Munford, Ala., formerly of Flatwoods. She was a homemaker, an avid sports fan and a member of the Flatwoods Church of Christ.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Barbara Jean Sammons (Grant) and Alberta Cook (Russ); and a brother, Alvin Wright (Faye).
Survivors include her husband of 13 years, Eugene Davis, a stepbrother, George (Buck) Carroll (Nancy); her son, Thomas B. Haynes (Doris) of Flatwoods; her two daughters, Devra Haynes-Barrett (Mark) of West Bloomfield, Mich., and Sandra K. Haynes of Georgetown; and two stepdaughters, Shirley Davis Osborn of Flatwoods and Beverly Davis Brewer (James) of Ashland.
Also surviving are two grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and eight stepgreat-grandchildren.
A private viewing for immediate family is planned. In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to Community Hospice, 1538 Central Ave., Ashland, KY 41101.

Ray Stephens - 1916-2008
Ray Stephens, 92, of Little Fork, Elliott County, passed away Monday, April 28, 2008, at his home.
He was born Jan. 29, 1916, a son of the late Reuben and Della Blanton Stephens.
He also was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Iva Peters Stephens; three brothers, Earl Stephens, Chester Stephens and Louie Stephens; and three sisters, Dorothy Stephens, Barbara Stephens and Bretta Blevins.
He was a lifelong farmer and a retired state maintenance worker. He was a Kentucky colonel and an Enterprise Baptist.
Mr. Stephens is survived by three daughters, Elma Lewis, Margie Walker, Rita Carl; a son, Curtis Stephens; and a brother, Okie Stephens.
He is also survived by 11 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandson.
Arrangements are pending at Lewis & Ferguson Funeral Home in Sandy Hook.

Jeanne Judd, 84, of Russell, died Tuesday in Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital.

Charlotte Davis Holsinger, 55, of West Portsmouth, Ohio, died Monday in Southern Ohio Medical Center in Portsmouth.

Alva Howard, 77, of Oil Springs, died Monday.

Orville Birchfield, 88, of Wellington, died Monday in Edgewood Estates Nursing Home in Frenchburg.
His wife, Edith Ratliff Birchfield, preceded him in death.

Evelyn Cooper, 79, of Garrison, died Monday in Southern Ohio Medical Center in Portmouth.
She was born May 2, 1928, in Lewis County.
