Jackson Baldwin (1944-2009)
Jackson Baldwin was in the presence of our Lord at 4:28 p.m. on Tuesday, April 28, 2009, after a brief but valiant battle at the young age of 64.
Jack leaves behind his soul mate wife of 44 years, Linda K. Monte Baldwin, and their daughter, Lisa Shannon Baldwin, all of Ashland.
He was born in Ashland, Ky., on July 25, 1944, to the late Ellis and Gartha Selvage Baldwin. Also preceding him in death was an older sister, Helen Castle of Mulberry, Fla.; a nephew, Bruce Ross of Dallas, Texas; and his mother-in-law, Ann Johnson of Ashland, formerly of Greenup.
In addition to his wife and daughter, a sister, Ruby Ross of Garland, Texas, a younger brother, Mark Baldwin of Flatwoods, Ky., and several nieces and nephews survive him. Jack also leaves behind two special granddogs, Gracie and Evie.
Jack worked at Moore’s Department Store in Ashland as a teenager, then at Armco for 13 years in the zinc grip and slitter shear shops before starting his own business.
As an entrepreneur, Jack, with his two partners, brothers Oakie and Roger Ford, was a mainstay in the local petroleum tank industry. He started a small one-man truck repair garage that became the cornerstone of their Catlettsburg corporations, including president/owner of Catlettsburg Electrostatic Service Inc., among others.
Jack was a dual member of Poage Lodge 325/Hampton Lodge 235, F&AM. He was a member of Ashland Elks, El Hasa Temple, AAOMS, past president of the Directors Staff and past president and past secretary of the Motor Corps. He was a tireless fundraiser for the temple and the Shriner’s Children’s Hospitals transportation fund. He was proud to say he was a Shriner and the friendships he made lasted a lifetime.
His love of racing started at a young age, building engines and racing drag cars in the Tri-State area. He instilled his passion for speed in his family. Their love of NASCAR, particularly the Earnhardts, was apparent to everyone who knew him.
While Jack’s passing is bittersweet, the family takes comfort in knowing he is reuniting with his buddies, Sam Pruitt, Charles “Birdy” Lambert, Bo Leake and Oakie Ford.
The many people he has helped, befriended and mentored are numerous but those that held a special place in his heart were Jeff Webb, John McDavid, Michelle Leake, Vivian Pruitt and Glen and Cathy Bush.
He will be missed dearly by all who knew and loved him.
