Lillian Thornsbury-Hatfield - 1912-2008

Lillian Thornsbury-Hatfield, 95, of Ashland, passed from this life to be with her heavenly father on Sunday, April 27, 2008.

She was born in Princess, Ky., on July 19, 1912, to the late James and Jenny Smith-Thornsbury. Mrs. Hatfield was a homemaker and attended Wildwood Baptist Church. She was a resident of Kingsbrook Lifecare Center in Ashland.

Besides her mother and father, Lillian was also preceded in death by her husband, Grover Hatfield.

Mrs. Hatfield is survived by two daughters, Jean Woods (Charles) of Cannonsburg and Peggy Thirion (Tim) of Ashland, as well as two sons, Robert Hatfield (Ann) and Clancy Hatfield, both of Ashland.

Ratliff Family Funeral Home in Ashland is handling arrangements for the family.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 30, 2008, at Bellefonte Memorial Gardens in Flatwoods.

There will be no visitation.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Cannonsburg Trinity Food Pantry, 11620 Midland Trail, Ashland, KY 41102.



Clarence E. “Eddie” Reed - 1943-2008

Eddie Reed, 64, of Ashland, passed suddenly on April 27, 2008, in King’s Daughters Medical Center.

A devoted family man, he enjoyed boating, camping and discussing politics with anyone who would lend an ear. Eddie was a member of the Daily Independent Family for many years.

Born July 24, 1943, in Dorothy W.Va., he was the son of Alva and Fern Reed. In 1963, he married his wife Sharon and started a family. Together they moved to many towns throughout West Virginia, Ohio and Virginia before settling in Ashland, Ky., in 1976.

Eddie was preceded in death by his father, Alva, of Lowell, Ohio; a brother, Ernie, of Orlando, Fla.; and a grandson, Camron Edward Reed.

Survivors include Sharon, his devoted wife of 46 years; his five sons, Glen of Florida, Jeff (Bobbie) of Westwood, Michael of Catlettsburg, Pat (Amy) of Catlettsburg and Chris (Bethany) of Columbus, Ohio, and also his “adopted son,” Tim Ellis, of Catlettsburg. The greatest joy of his life was being “Poppy” to his grandchildren, Becca, Kasey, Chase, Camron, Lexi, Braydon and Gracie. Eddie was overjoyed at the birth of his first great-grandchild, Peyton Williams, in 2007. He is also survived by his mother, Fern; and brothers Kenny (Marie), John (Pam) and Bob, all of Lowell, Ohio.

Visitation for Eddie will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Lazear Funeral Home in Ashland. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Lazear. He will be laid to rest in Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens.



Lillian C. Jordan Savage - 1925-2008

Lillian C. Jordan Savage, 83, of Flatwoods, Ky., died April 27, 2008, in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland, Ky.

She was born Jan. 12, 1925, in Ashland, a daughter of the late Issac M. and Emma Frasure Jordan.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Francis M. Savage; a daughter, Darinda Prator; and a sister, Thelma Carol.

She was a retired custodian with the Russell Independent School District, a member of First Baptist Church of Flatwoods and a life member of American Legion Post 325 Auxiliary.

Surviving are two sons, Ron Savage and Gary (Beverly) Savage, all of Flatwoods; three brothers, Richard (Ruth) Jordan of Ohio and Billy Ray (Pat) Jordan of Coal Grove, Ohio; a sister, Ruby Edwards of Springboro, Ohio; seven grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. She was also survived by special friends Jim and Lenore Leadingham.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 1 at Carman Funeral Home in Flatwoods by Mark Gibson. Burial will be in Bellefonte Memorial Gardens in Flatwoods.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 30 at the funeral home.

Dale Grayson - 1961-2008

Darwin Dale Grayson, 46, of South Shore, Ky., died Sunday, April 27, 2008.

He was born June 21, 1961, in Portsmouth, Ohio, a son of the late Darwin K. and Margaret Webster Grayson. He was preceded in death by his wife, Vickie Sprinkle Grayson, on Nov. 21, 2005.

Dale was a member of Operating Engineers Local 18 of Columbus, Ohio. He attended Grace Independent Baptist Church in Greenup, Ky., and was a member of Sons of American Legion James Flannery Post 276.

Surviving are three sons, Josh (Leighann) Grayson, Matthew Grayson and Brian Grayson, all of South Shore; two granddaughters, Joshia and Maggie Grayson; and two brothers, Duane Grayson and Steve Grayson, both of South Shore.

He was also preceded in death by a sister, Pamela Sue Grayson.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, May 2, 2008, at Morton Funeral Home in South Shore by Charles Greene. Burial will be in Mount Zion Cemetery in South Shore.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.



Grace Barber - 1917-2008

Grace Barber, 91, of Dayton, Ohio, formerly of Grayson, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, April 25 in Dayton Hospice.

She was born Jan. 10, 1917, to John and Elizabeth Brainard Johnston.

Grace lived most of her life in Carter County and was a member of Oak Grove Church of Christ. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clifford Barber, in 1969.

Grace was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was loved and will be missed by her son, Bob (Marlene) Barber of Franklin, Ohio; her daughter, Bonnie (Wilbur) Hall of Middletown, Ohio; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandson; a sister, Opal Justice of Wharton, Ohio; and many family members.

The family wishes to express appreciation for all those who assisted Grace in her later years so she could remain in her home, with special thanks to Mary Huff and Hazel and Lowell Sloas of Grayson.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Malone Funeral Home in Grayson by Donald Damron and Timothy Carper. Burial will be in East Carter County Memorial Gardens.

Paul William Sierer - 1927-2008

Paul William Sierer, 81, of Ironton passed away Saturday (April 26, 2008) in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland, Ky.

The Ironton native was born April 9, 1927, the son of the late Louis John and Emma Norris Sierer. He was the husband of Dorothy Ann Dickenson Sierer, whom he married on May 30,1958.

Mr. Sierer was a 1945 graduate of Saint Joseph High School. He attended Xavier University and graduated from Marshall Collage, where he was a member of the Marshall University Journalism Hall of Fame. He received his bachelor of arts degree in journalism. He formerly worked as a journalist for The Ironton Daily, The Huntington Herald Dispatch, and The Dayton Daily News and was the editor of The Ashland Daily Independent for 36 years, retiring in 1989. His career spanned 45 years. He served for the United States Army Field Artillery from July 1945 to November 1946, when he was discharged as a staff sergeant. He was also a sergeant major in charge of the classification center in Fort Bragg, N.C. He was former president for I Care for Good Government in Ironton. He was a member of the TB and Respiratory Disease Association of Ashland, United Cerebral Palsy of Eastern Kentucky, Ohio-Kanawha Valley Chapter of Sigma Delta Chi, Board of Directors of the Ashland Vocational-Technical School, and chairman of the First Amendment Congress of Kentucky. He was also a member of the Associated Press Managing Editors Association, American Society of Newspaper Editors, Ohio Blue Pencil Club, the Kentucky Press Association and the Knights of Columbus in Ashland. He was a member of the Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Ironton and a former member of the Parrish Council. He was included in the Who’s Who in the Southeastern United States and a former member of the Ashland Community Concert Association. He was also a Kentucky colonel and an Ohio honorary lieutenant governor. He was a honorary lifetime gold card member of Local 791 of the American Federation of Musicians. He organized the golf Key Club Tour and was secretary of the Retirees’ Golf League. He enjoyed playing golf, cornhole and the football ratings.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brother, Louis Raymond Sierer.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his five daughters,

Susan Mary and Jon Morin of Raleigh, N.C., Anne Kristin Artis of Ironton, Judith Ellen and Malcolm Wain of Ironton, Carol Marie and Ovid Wilson of Ironton and Linda Katherine Pennington of Ironton; his sister, Helen Marguerite Sierer of Ironton; 12 grandchildren, Cameron, Paul, Frankie, David and Jon-Stephen Artis, Jessica Larzo, Sydney Brooke Wain, Natalie Wilson, Katie Roberts, Hannah Lee Pennington, Kylie Hope and Kristin Elizabeth Morin; and a great-grandson, Quentin Johnson.

A funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday (April 30,2008) at Saint Joseph Catholic Church with Father Thomas Nau officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. today at Phillips Funeral Home, 1004 S. Seventh St., Ironton, OH 45638. A Rosary service will be at 8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home. The family request donations be made to the Community Hospice Care Center 2330 Pollard Road, Ashland, KY 41101.

Roy “David” McCallister - 1933-2008

Roy “David” McCallister, 74, of South Point, Ohio, husband of Doreen Finn McCallister, died Saturday, April 26, 2008, in King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland, Ky.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 30, 2008, at White Chapel Mausoleum in Barboursville with Ernest M. Ritchie officiating. Burial will follow.

He was born Sept. 30, 1933, in Milton, W.Va., a son of the late Thomas and Rosa Lee Chapman McCallister.

Also preceding him in death were a sister, Jean Frye; and his first wife, Betty Jo McCallister.

He was a carpenter and a 50-year member of the Carpenters Local 302.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, are two sons, Tom McCallister and his wife, Gwen, and Roy McCallister, all of South Point; two stepdaughters, Patty Benson and her husband, Wayne, of Waynesville, Ohio, and Caroline Hillard and her husband, Rodney, of Catlettsburg, Ky.; six grandchildren, Betty Jo McCallister, Timothy McCallister, Kati McCallister, Sarah McCallister, Jimmy Hillard and Meagon Hillard; a great-grandchild, Claire Newhouse; a brother, Paul McCallister; and a sister, Ann Bryan.

Wilson Reeves - 1925-2008

Wilson L. Reeves, 82, of Ashland, died Sunday in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland.

He was born Sept. 6, 1925, in Fleming County.

His wife, Jean T. Whitley Reeves, died in 2004.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church of Cannonsburg.

Burial will be in Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens in Ashland.

Jimmie Williams - 1935-2008

Jimmie R. Williams, 73, of South Shore, died Saturday at his residence.

He was born Jan. 18, 1935, in South Shore.

His wife, Verna C. Lewis Williams, died in 2006.

Cloetta Burroughs, 55, of Worthington, died Sunday in Grayson.

The funeral was at 11 a.m. Monday at Martin Branch Freewill Baptist Church in Estill. Burial was in Keen Cemetery in Wayland.

Connie Kestner - 1966-2008

Connie Lynn Kestner, 41, of Paintsville, died Sunday at her residence.

She was born Sept. 30, 1966, in Floyd County. Her husband, Paul Kestner, survives.
