Arthur Lewis Osburn (1926-2009)
Arthur Lewis Osburn, 83, of Westwood, died Sunday, April 26, 2009, in King’s Daughters Medical Center.
He was born Jan. 29, 1926, in Raceland, Ky., the son of the late Desmond and Eunice Adkins Osburn.
He was a retired carman for the C&O Railroad with 45 years of service. He was also a member of Hoods Creek Baptist Church, a founding member of the Westwood Fire Department and Westwood Boys Club, a member of C&O Historical Society and was an avid model railroader and fisherman. Mr. Osburn was a WWII Navy veteran (CB stationed in Okinawa).
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepmother, Thelma Mae Cook Osburn; and one brother, Richard L. Osburn.
He is survived by his wife and best friend for 63 years, Charlene Arden Osburn; two daughters, Betty Cassell and her husband, Curtis, of Ashland and Kimberly Osburn of Comstock, N.Y.; one son, Robert Osburn and his wife, Rhonda, of Ashland; two sisters, Helen Adkins of Ravenna, Ohio, and Eunice Marie Parsons and her husband, Otis, of Huntington, W.Va.; eight grandchildren, Sean and Ann Hutchison, Amy and Bennie Dickison, Brad and Shelly Osburn, Jason and Jennifer Hutchinson, Julie and Robert Smith, Rachel Arthur, Eddie Arthur and Brett Lamere; 11 great-grandchildren, Spencer Hutchison, Kaylee Dickison, Conner Hutchison, Katie Hutchison, Drew Osburn, Perrin Osburn, Regan Osburn, Peyton Hutchinson, Landon Hutchinson, Camdon Hutchinson and Ryan Smith; a special sister-in-law, Velma Osburn of Huntington, W.Va.; and two aunts, Hester Nicely of Flatwoods, Ky., and Mary Osburn of Huntington.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 29, 2009, at Miller Funeral Home in Ashland with the Rev. Jason Hutchinson officiating. Burial will follow in Bowen Cemetery in Barboursville, W.Va.
The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until service time Wednesday at the funeral home.
Anna Lee Pope (1921-2009)
Anna Lee Pope, 88, of Ashland, Ky., died April 26, 2009, at her residence.
She was born Feb. 24, 1921, in Fultz, Ky. (Carter County), a daughter of the late Lewis and Lillian R. Littleton Pope.
She was also preceded in death by a brother, Chester R. Pope, and a sister, Opal Marie Pope.
She was former executive secretary for Don Putnam Jr. for 28 years and a member of First Presbyterian Church, where she formerly served as secretary.
Surviving are nieces, Susan Staton and Mary Beth Pope; nephews, Stephen Pope and Mark Pope; aunt, Faye Burnett; an uncle, June Littleton, and a sister-in-law, Geraldine Pope, of Huntington, W.Va.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, April 30, 2009, at Steen Funeral Home-Central Avenue Chapel in Ashland by the Rev. John Moore. Burial will be Rose Hill Burial Park.
Friends may call from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Orville Adkins (1922-2009)
Orville Adkins, 86, of Ashland, Ky., died at his residence, April 25, 2009, surrounded by family and friends.
He was born Sept. 25, 1922, in Argillite, Ky., a son of the late Arthur and Leona Oliver Adkins.
He was retired from Armco Steel with 38 years of service, was a U.S. Army veteran and was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving are his loving wife of 54 years, Doris Stevens Adkins of Ashland; two sons, John Adkins and wife, Sandra, and Orville Adkins Jr., all of Ashland; daughter, Debbie Wooten of Ashland; sisters, Sharon Yvonne Mosier and husband, Ted, of Ashland and Goldie Marie Hines of Jacksonville, Fla.; grandchildren, Aaron Adkins, Courtney Wooten, Zachary Adkins, Chase Adkins and Rachel Adkins, all of Ashland; and one great-grandchild, Isabelle Adkins.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 29, 2009, at Steen Funeral Home-13th Street Chapel in Ashland by Pastor Jimm Smedley. Burial will be in Ashland Cemetery.

Graden Berry (1921-2009)
Graden M. Berry, 87, of Ashland, passed away early Monday morning, April 27, 2009, in Arbors in Gallipolis, Ohio.
Mr. Berry was a son of the late Ulysses and Corilda Chapman Berry, born July 23, 1921, in Chapman, Ky. He served honorably with the United States Army European Theater during World War II, and was an operator for Gould National Battery in Huntington, W.Va.
He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Monnie Bellomy Berry; his only son, Gary Graden Berry and his wife, Tajuana, of South Point, Ohio; an only daughter, Yvonne Humphry and her husband, Michael, of Ashland, Ky.; a sister, Myrtle Gibbs of Greenfield, Ind; and two precious grandchildren, Amber Luby and her husband, Steve, of South Point and Andrea Bradford and her husband, Benjamin, of Apopka, Fla.
Preceding him in death are a brother, Bill Berry, and a sister, Melua McKnight.
A graveside service for Mr. Berry will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 29, 2009, at Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens in Ashland. Words of reassurance and comfort will be offered by Nelson Collins.
Visitation will be from noon until service time Wednesday at Kilgore & Collier Funeral Home on Panola Street in Catlettsburg.
David Lee Vest (1933-2009)
David Lee Vest, 75, of Ashland, Ky., husband of Linda Hughes Couch Vest, died Monday, April 27, 2009 in King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland.
He was born Sept. 8, 1933, in Summers County, W.Va., a son of the late Wylie Cunningham and Ora Leta Lane Vest.
He was also preceded in death by his first wife, JoAnn Thompson Vest in 2002; and a son, Jeffrey Lee Vest.
He was a retired maintenance planner in the blast furnace of Armco Steel Co. with 37 years of service, and was a Korean War U.S. Air Force veteran.
He was a member and deacon of the First Baptist Church in Russell, a member of Ky. Baptist Builders, where he had extensively traveled, a volunteer with Southern Baptist Disaster Relief, a volunteer of many mission trips, a member of the Masonic Blue Lodge and Smith Lodge No. 775, and extremely active with River City Amateur Radio Association Call No. KZ4G, Quarter Century Wireless Association, Iron City Antique Auto Club, and American Legion Post No. 76. He was an avid fisherman, a big UK basketball sports fan and a fan of NASCAR.
David and Linda traveled extensively and lived another lifetime in five years.
Additional survivors include a son, David J. Vest and his wife, Janet, of Goshen, Ohio; a daughter, Joy Wright and her husband, Larry, of Midland, Mich.; a brother, Jason Clifford Vest and his wife, Louise, of Sumter, S.C.; a daughter-in-law, Sharon Gibbs and husband, David, of Washington Court House, Ohio; and five grandchildren, Jonathan Wright and his wife, Amanda, of Gainesville, Fla., Joseph Wright of Oxford, Miss., Janda Wray Vest of Cleveland, Ohio, Landon Gibbs of Washington Court House, and Lee Conwell Vest of Goshen.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 29, 2009, at First Baptist Church-Russell by the Rev. Wayne Kuhner and the Rev. Johnny Riley and eulogy by Jonathan Wright. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery in Kenova, W.Va.
Friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. tonight at the church.
Pallbearers will be David Vest, David Gibbs, Jonathan Wright, Larry Wright, Landon Gibbs, Joseph Wright and Larry Adams.

David Stewart (1949-2009)
David E. Stewart, 60, of Catlettsburg, departed the midst of family to join his Heavenly Father after passing Sunday, April 26, 2009, from King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland, Ky.
Mr. Stewart was a son of the late Teddy Nick Stewart and Betty Jane Stambaugh Stewart, born Jan. 23, 1949, in Ashland. He was the owner operator of Stewart’s Fishing Lake and an avid fisherman, who enjoyed poker and ponies. David was well known and liked throughout our community, a friend and a good family man.
Sadly left behind is a loving family including his wife of 31 years, Myra Fannin Stewart; two sons, Timbo (Wilma) Stewart of Wayne, W.Va., and Charles (Patty) Bias of Houston, Texas; four daughters, Amy Stewart of Catlettsburg, Jackie Laney of Rush, Ky., Angela (James) Nelson of Huntington, W.Va., and Joanna (Gary) Roten of Boyd County, Ky; two brothers, Darrell (Shelly) Stewart and Teddy Stewart, all of Catlettsburg; six sisters, Sue (Ron) Chandler of Kenova, W.Va., Mary Jane Salyers of Catlettsburg, Connie (Rube) Shannon of Rush, Ky., Bonnie Stewart of Jacksonville, Fla., Ithel (Chuck) Minton of Columbus, Ohio, and Brenda Adkins of Kenova; 14 grandchildren, Brandon, Joey, Brittany, Katie, Christina, Sarah, Tiffany, Tristan, Trinnity, Cortney, Mara Sue, Tatianna, Danyella, and Trevor; one adored great-grandson, Kellen; and many loving aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. David’s family all rejoice in the assurance of his salvation through Christ endless love and grace.
Preceding him in death are a brother, Larry Stewart; a brother-in-law, Doodle Salyers; and his fishin’ buddy and best friend, Frank Powell.
Services in remembrance of Mr. Stewart will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 29, 2009, at the Neal Funeral Home on Center Street in Catlettsburg. A message of hope and inspiration will be offered by Pastor Willie May. Final rest will follow a committal at Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens in Ashland.
Casket bearers will be Kenny Daniels, Benny Rice, Mark Potter, Joe Hammond, Robbie Short and Smokie Crisp. Honorary bearers will be Keith Layne and Randy Mosley.

Raymond L. “Smitty” Smith (1942-2009)
Raymond L. “Smitty” Smith, age 66, passed away April 26, 2009, in San Antonio, Texas.
He was born Dec. 29, 1942, in Wurtland, Ky., to the late James and Anna Mae Smith. Raymond retired from the U.S. Air Force after 20 dedicated years and then worked many years with the civil service at Randolph AFB. He was a member of the San Antonio Mustang Club, the Alzafar Shrine Golf Unit and the Scottish Rite.
Raymond was an avid racquetball player and was affiliated with St. Mark United Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara; and twin sister, Reba Lucille Smith Salmon.
Raymond is survived by his siblings, David Smith, Joann Spears, Jean Brown, Carolyn Harris and Pamela West; companion, Jackie McCullum; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. tonight, April 28, 2009, at Porter Loring Mortuary North in San Antonio, Texas.
A memorial service will be at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 29, 2009, at St. Mark United Methodist Church, 1902 Vance Jackson.
A private internment will take place in Chapel Hill Memorial Cemetery in Converse, Texas.

Rev. Walter Thomas Applegate (1931-2009)
The Rev. Walter Thomas Applegate, 77, of Greenup, Ky., died Sunday, April 26, 2009, in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland, Ky.
He was born May 17,1931, in Ribolt, Ky., a son of the late Benjamin Applegate and Mildred Cooper Applegate.
He was a retired United Methodist minister of 50 years.
Surviving are his wife, Bonnie Crawley Applegate; one daughter, Susan (Rick) Seelhorst of South Shore; three granddaughters, Stefanie, Rachel and Jennifer Seelhorst; and one sister, Ruby Gill of Maysville, Ky.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 29, 2009, at Morton Funeral Home in South Shore, Ky., with Mark Girard, Bob Sweeney and Tami Coleman officiating. Burial will be in Siloam Cemetery in South Shore.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. tonight at the funeral home.
Bobby Kiser (1959-2009)
Bobby Kiser, 50, of Olive Hill, took his heavenly flight from his residence to be with Jesus on Sunday, April 26, 2009.
He was born April 20, 1959, in Carter County, Ky., a son of the late Earl and Madge Hignite Kiser. He worked for the Little Sandy District Health Department as a janitor for 13 years and was a deacon at Mt. Carmel Primitive Baptist Church in Ohio. Bobby enjoyed going to church, spending time with his wife, son, and his cat White Owl. He also enjoyed camping, fishing, reading and muzzle loading.
He is survived by his wife, Martha Burchett Kiser; one son, Adam Kiser of Olive Hill; three brothers, Luther Rae (Glenda) Kiser of Lumberton, N.C., Billy (Estella) Kiser of Concord, N.C., and Earl (Kathy) Kiser Jr. of Spring Hill, Tenn.; and two sisters, Patty Lester of Grayson, Ky., and Joann Hay of Olive Hill.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 29, 2009, at Sparks Funeral Home in Grayson by Virgil Hall and Lewis Davis. Burial will follow at a later date.

Bryan Keith Barker (1971-2009)
Bryan Keith Barker, 37, of Rush, died Sunday evening April, 26, 2009, at his residence.
He was born Sept. 9, 1971, in Ashland, Ky., a son of Donald and Linda Thomas Barker. He was a 1990 graduate of Raceland High School, and attended ACC. Bryan was a member of the First Baptist Church of Coalton, and enjoyed golf, traveling, history and spending time with his nieces and nephews. He also was an avid UK fan, and loved to fish, especially in Florida as well as Grayson Lake.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by a half brother, Donald L. (Sherrie) Barker Jr. of Columbus, Ohio; three sisters, Kim (Tim) Melvin of Greenup, Deanna (Sean) Curtis of Catlettsburg, and Michelle (Matthew) Earls of Bellefonte; two nieces, Samantha Ray and Lauren Grace; and two nephews, Matthew Tyler and Robert Alan.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 30, 2009, at the Sparks Funeral Home in Grayson by Carson Bill Gullett. Burial will follow in the Coalton Community Cemetery.

Infant Alexis Grace McGlone, of Olive Hill, Ky., was stillborn Sunday, April 26, 2009, in St. Claire Regional Medical Center in Morehead, Ky.
She is the daughter of Bernard “Bear” and Celia Bertram McGlone of Olive Hill.
She was preceded in death by paternal grandparents, Joe Sparks, Ethel McGlone and Zona Stamper.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by paternal grandparents, William Junior and Beth Sparks McGlone of Olive Hill; maternal grandparents, Clarence Bertram and Christine Bertram, both of Greenup, Ky.; paternal great-grandparents, Bernard McGlone and Emma Sparks, both of Olive Hill; maternal great-grandparents, Jim and Ollie Rister Bertram of Greenup and Loretta Madden of Mansfield, Ohio; paternal uncle and aunts, Joe and Polly McGlone, and Crystal McGlone, all of Olive Hill; maternal aunt, Winnie Meadows of Greenup; and two special cousins, Hanna Meadows of Greenup and Josie Sarah Beth McGlone of Olive Hill.
Graveside service will be at 1 p.m. today, April 28, 2009, at the McGlone Family Cemetery on Big Run Road in Olive Hill with Brother Ed Porter officiating.

Ernest Eugene DeCoursey, 93 of Wayland, died April 24 in Eastern Kentucky Veterans Center in Hazard.
He was born April 3, 1916, in Auxier.
His wife, June Martin DeCoursey, preceded him in death.

He was born Feb. 6, 1923, in Orkney.
