Lester Franklin “Swanee” Swanson (1924-2008)

Lester Franklin “Swanee” Swanson, 83, of Ashland, died Wednesday, April 16, 2008 in King’s Daughters Medical Center.

He was born Aug. 17, 1924, in Catlettsburg, Ky., the son of the late James Swanson and Lana Rymer Swanson Ross.

He was a retired yard conductor with C&O Railroad, a WWII Navy veteran, a member of the American Legion Post 76, and Catlettsburg Elks Lodge 942 and was of the Baptist faith.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles Henry Swanson and Cecil Swanson.

Survivors include a daughter, Carol Porter (Bill) of Russell, Ky.; a son, Lester F. Swanson Jr. (Gabrielle) of Tierra Verde, Fla.; a sister, Gloria Luppo of Brooklyn, Mich.; two brothers, James Swanson Jr. of Phoenix, Ariz., and Jack Swanson of Brooklyn; three grandchildren, John Porter, Philip Swanson and Maria Swanson; and a very special friend, Joe Tackett of Ashland.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 20, 2008 at Miller Funeral Home in Ashland by Kenneth Vaughn, minister. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Burial Park.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Serving as pallbearers will be Mike Helton, Jim Helton, Ron Helton, Paul Helton Jr., Gary Helton and Donnie May.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Boyd County Nursing and Rehabilitation for their loving care.



Kenneth Jarvis (1919-2008)

Kenneth Jarvis, 89, of Westwood, formerly of Fort Pierce, Fla., passed away Thursday, April 17, 2008.

Kenneth was born April 9, 1919, in Carter County, a son of the late Jace and Sadie Hall Jarvis. He proudly served his country during World War II in the U.S. Army. Kenneth was a retired carpenter for EBASCO in Fort Pierce. He was a former member of Masonic Lodge No. 87 in Fort Pierce; a former member of Lakeworth Consistory in the Orient of Florida; and a member of Fred M. Gross Lodge No. 953 F&AM.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Rachel Salyers.

He is survived by his wife, Dottie McComas Jarvis; three daughters, Carolyn (Michael) Doherty of Mount Vernon, Ind., Sandra (Gary) Whisenhunt of Odessa, Texas and Connie (Allen) Wills of Alamogordo, N.M.; a sister, Thelma Coburn of Ashland; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; three special nephews, Kenny Coburn, Bill Coburn and Jimmy Coburn, all of Ashland; and a host of friends and extended family.

Funeral services will be conducted by nephews, Kenny Coburn and Bill Coburn on Saturday, April 19, 2008 at 11 a.m. at Caniff Funeral Home in Westwood.

Friends may call on Saturday one hour before the service. Burial will follow in Bellefonte Memorial Gardens in Flatwoods.



Kenneth E. “Dad” Houck Sr. (1927-2008)

Kenneth E. “Dad” Houck Sr., 80, of Ashland, Ky., died Wednesday evening, April 16, 2008 in Community Hospice Care Center.

He was born June 11, 1927, in Ashland, a son of the late Ernest E. and Atlas Morrison Houck.

He was retired from Armco Steel, a WWII Army veteran, a member of Moore Street Tabernacle and Hampton Masonic Lodge and a Kentucky colonel.

Surviving are his wife, Leona Collins Houck of Ashland; a son, Kenneth E. Houck Jr. and wife, Kim of Grayson, Ky.; a daughter, Pam Roberson and husband, George of Ashland; a brother, Donald L. Houck of Ashland; and three grandchildren, Heather VanDyke and husband, Frank, Steven Roberson and wife, Lisa and Haley Houck.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 19, 2008 at the Steen Funeral Home-Central Avenue Chapel in Ashland by the Rev. Danny Pancake. Burial will be in Ashland Cemetery.

Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Samuel Forrest Colvin Jr. (1914-2008)

Samuel Forrest Colvin Jr., died April 14, 2008 in Hospice House of Huntington.

He was born July 6, 1914, to the late Samuel Forrest and Julia Blanton Colvin in Manila, Ky., the ninth of 16 children.

He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Helen Pack; two sons and daughters-in-law, David Forrest and Marcia of Morgantown and Samuel Tracy and Prudence of Prichard; four grandchildren, Alicia of Pittsburgh, Pa., Nicholas Forrest and wife, Kate of Martinsburg and Andrew and Samuel Franklin of Prichard; and three brothers, Douglas, B.H. and Chester, all of Ohio.

Samuel was an ordained United Baptist minister for 59 years and served as pastor of several churches. He retired from the Huntington Veterans Administration Medical Center and was a World War II veteran. He was a Mason and a member of the American Legion and Disabled American Veterans.

Samuel was active in the community and was a member of the City of Kenova Hall of Fame. He was president of the C-K High School Band Boosters, served for 25 years on the Wayne County Library Board and was instrumental in building a new C-K Public Library.

Visitation will be from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 19, 2008 at the Rollins Funeral Home in Kenova. The funeral will follow at 2 p.m. Burial will be in Woodmere Cemetery in Huntington.

Memorial gifts may be made to the C-K Public Library, 1200 Oak St., Kenova, WV 25530.

Pauline Moore (1924-2008)

Pauline Moore, 83, of Wurtland, died Wednesday in Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital.

She was born Sept. 29, 1924.

Her husband, William Moore, preceded her in death.

A private service will be at a later date. Burial will be in Helton Cemetery in Greenup.

There is no visitation.

Evans Funeral Home in Raceland is in charge of arrangements.



James “Jim” Burchett (1938-2008)

James “Jim” Burchett, 70, of Olive Hill, died Wednesday at his residence.

He was born Feb. 27, 1938, in Carter County.

His wife, Virgie Skaggs Burchett, survives.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Globe Funeral Chapel in Olive Hill. Burial will be in Burchett-Daily Cemetery in Olive Hill.

Friends may call after 5 p.m. today and until time of service Saturday at the funeral home.



Arthur Carter (1920-2008)

Arthur Jack Carter, 88, of Prestonsburg, died Wednesday in St. Joseph Hospital Hospice Care Center.

He was born Jan. 2, 1920.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Carter Funeral Home in Prestonsburg. Burial will be in Mayo Cemetery in Prestonsburg.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church, 256 S. Arnold Ave., Prestonsburg, KY 41653.



John Fairchild (1938-2008)

John Fairchild, 69, of Staffordsville, died Wednesday at his residence.

He was born Oct. 19, 1938, in Johnson County.

His wife, Sue Williams Fairchild, survives.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Jones-Preston Funeral Home in Paintsville. Burial will be in Fairchild Cemetery in Staffordsville.

Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and until time of the service Saturday at the funeral home.



Estill Franklin (1914-2008)

Estill Franklin, 94, of Dayton, Ohio, died Wednesday in Hospice of Dayton.

He was born Feb. 13, 1914, in Johnson County.

His wife, Neva Lee Price Franklin, died in 1975.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Jones-Preston Funeral Home in Paintsville. Burial will be in Price Cemetery in Thelma.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 tonight at the funeral home.

Janie Harris Cushard, 78, of Vanceburg, died Wednesday in University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington.

Elaine Flannery, 75, of Dayton, Ohio, formerly of Sandy Hook, died Thursday in St. Claire Regional Medical Center in Morehead.
