Charles E. Timberlake - 1935-2008
Charles Edward Timberlake, who was emeritus professor of Russian history at the University of Missouri for 37 years, died on March 21, 2008, in Columbia, Mo., at the age of 72.
Charles Timberlake was born on Sept. 9, 1935, in South Shore, Ky., located in the heart of Appalachia. His parents, Howard Timberlake and Mabel Collier Timberlake, came from a long line of Kentucky farmers who settled the Ohio River Valley in the 1850s after moving west from Virginia. Most of his immediate family still resides in South Shore on the southern bank of the Ohio River.
After graduating from McKell High School in South Shore, he became the first in his family to attend college. He spent four years at Berea College in Berea, Ky., where he graduated with a B.A. in history-political science in 1957. That same year, he moved to Claremont, Calif., where he received a scholarship to work on a degree in history at Claremont Graduate University. In 1958, he married Patricia Perkins of Claremont. While working on his M.A., he received a California Secondary Teaching Credential and taught history in several California secondary schools. He completed a M.A. in history with a minor in international relations at Claremont Graduate University in 1962.
In 1961, he entered the Ph.D. program in Russian History at the University of Washington and the family moved to Seattle. In 1965-66, to complete research for his dissertation on Ivan Ivanovitch Petrunkevitch, a 19th century Russian Zemstvo leader, the family moved to Helsinki, Finland, for a year. While living in Helsinki, each day he conducted research in the Slavic department of the Helsinki University Library and in May of that year he made his first of many visits to St. Petersburg, Russia. He was awarded a Ph.D. in Russian history with a minor in Far East area studies from the University of Washington in 1968. In the fall 1967, he began his lengthy and productive academic career at the University of Missouri, where he would remain until his retirement in 2004.
Charles Timberlake was a tireless advocate and promoter of Russian and Soviet studies on many levels — international, national, regional and campus. He taught and lectured abroad at universities and academies of science in England, Finland, Russia, the Republic of Georgia and the People’s Republic of China. He was also a popular public speaker for various educational, civic and professional groups and was frequently interviewed on radio and television. Most notable was his work as an expert commentator for CNN’s coverage of former Soviet Premier Gorbachev’s visit to Fulton, Mo., to deliver a speech where Winston Churchill made his famous “Iron Curtain” speech.
Professor Timberlake’s publications reveal the range and depth of his research interests from books, essays and journal articles to contributions to major encyclopedias and guidebooks for travelers. His major works include: “Essays on Russian Liberalism,” University of Missouri Press, 1972; “Detente: A Documentary, Praeger” 1977; “Religious and Secular Forces in Late Tsarist Russia,” University of Washington Press, 1992; “The Fate of Russian Orthodox Monasteries and Convents Since 1917,” Jackson School of International Studies, University of Washington, 1995, and with David O’Brien and others, “Services and Quality of Life in Rural Villages in the Former Soviet Union: Data from 1991 and 1993 Surveys,” University Press of America 1997, and numerous book chapters and articles.
He was an exemplary teacher and mentor of hundreds of undergraduates and scores of graduate students and his dedication to teaching and scholarship was recognized with many awards over the course of his career. Many of his faculty colleagues at Missouri will remember him as an indefatigable supporter of and advocate for the university library. His determined effort to preserve and build upon its Slavic collection ranks among his major contributions to the campus.
In 1996, Professor Timberlake received the MU Byler Distinguished Professor Award. In 2000, he received the University of Missouri Alumni Association’s Distinguished Faculty Award. In 2002, he received the Missouri University Provost’s Award for Leadership in International Education. In 2002, he received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from Berea College.
Charles Timberlake earned the respect and admiration of those who knew him for his devotion to his family. He had, early in his career, moved his family out of Columbia to an old farmhouse on 75 acres on Route N near the Missouri River so that his young sons, Mark, Dan and Eric (and eventually his nine grandchildren) would have more space and freedom to roam. He often found ways to include wife, Patricia, on his numerous research trips and teaching engagements abroad.
Charles is survived by his mother, Mabel, age 93; of South Shore; his wife of 49 years, Patricia, of Columbia, Mo.; son Mark and his wife, Lotta, and their children, Anna, Nicklas and Carl Alexander, of Columbia; son Daniel and his wife, Martha, and their children, Anne and Sara, of Boise, Idaho; son Eric and his wife, Beth, and their children, Peter, Michael, Luke and Mary Claire, of Carmel, Ind.; sisters Joann Johnson and Roberta Green and her husband, Robert Green, all of South Shore; and brother Roger Timberlake and his wife, Gloria, of Cincinnati, Ohio. His father, Howard, and sister, Marlene Glass, preceded him in death.
