Kenley Emerson Dobyns - 1930-2008
Kenley Emerson Dobyns, 77, of Ashland, Ky., died Sunday, April 6, 2008, in St. Mary’s Medical Center following a brief illness.
He was born Oct. 28, 1930, in Ashland, and was preceded in death by his parents, Boyd Dobyns and Erma Sparks Dobyns.
Mr. Dobyns was retired from the Putnam Agency. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War and a member of Unity Baptist Church, where he served as deacon. He was a volunteer with Community Hospice, a member of the KDMC Auxiliary and a volunteer in Pastoral Care and a 30-year member of the Ashland Kiwanis Club.
Surviving are his stepmother, Elizabeth Dobyns of Ashland; his wife of 52 years, Janet Kinner Dobyns of Ashland; a daughter, Diana D. Allen and husband Rodney of Huntington, W.Va.; a brother, Clifford N. Dobyns and wife Judy of Birmingham, Ala.; a grandson, Austin Emerson Allen of Huntington, W.Va.; his mother-in-law, Ruth E. Kinner of Ashland; a sister-in-law, Josette K. Gibson of South Point, Ohio; two nephews; and a niece.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 9, 2008, at Steen Funeral Home-Marshall Steen Chapel in Ashland by Dr. Floyd Paris and the Rev. Harold Cathey. Burial will be in Ashland Cemetery, with military rites by Kenova American Legion Post 93.
Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today, April 8, 2008, at the funeral home.

Thurman H. “Jack” Jackson - 1930-2008
Thurman H. “Jack” Jackson, born Jan. 30, 1930, died April 6, 2008, in Springboro, Ohio.
Preceding him in death was his wife of 52 years, Bernadine (Mullins) Jackson.
Surviving are a daughter, Judy (Chuck) Smith; sons Stephen (Paula) Jackson and Gregory (Vickey) Jackson; grandchildren Stacy (Jerry) Schulte, Shannon (Mark) Taylor, Laura (Tim) Ferguson, Dr. Sarah Jackson, Brian (Karen) Jackson and Kevin Jackson; two great-grandsons, Kellen Taylor and Kyle Jackson; and a sister, Kay Davis of Ashland.
Family will receive friends today, April 8, 2008, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Schlientz & Moore Funeral Home, 820 Miamisburg-Centerville Road, Dayton, Ohio, and Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Carman Funeral Home, 2301 Argillite Road, Flatwoods, Ky., with funeral services Thursday at 11 a.m. at Carman Funeral Home. Burial will be in Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens.

Virgil Reeves - 1909-2008
Virgil Reeves, 99, of Worthington, Ky., went to be with the Lord on Sunday, April 6, 2008, in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland.
Mr. Reeves was born Jan. 19, 1909, in Carter County, Ky., a son of the late Mason and Ida Baldridge Reeves. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Ona Jarvis, and two sons, James Reeves and Kenneth Reeves.
He was a retired switchman for the C&O Railroad.
Surviving are three daughters, Juanita (Roy) Crum of Baton Rouge, La., Dorothy (Bill) Blanton of New Carlisle, Ohio, and Laura Holt of Ashland, Ky.; two sons, Billy (Nancy) Reeves of Wurtland, Ky., and Donald Reeves of Baton Rouge, La.; a sister, Ella Bowling of Ironton, Ohio; 18 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 9, 2008, by Bishop Henry Montgomery at Bellefonte Memorial Gardens in Flatwoods, Ky.
There will be no visitation.
Evans Funeral Home in Raceland, Ky., is in charge of arrangements.

Paul Carr - 1922-2008
Paul Carr, 85, of Flatwoods, Ky., went to be with the Lord on Sunday, April 6, 2008, in Dunbar, W.Va.
Mr. Carr was born Sept. 16, 1922, in Haverhill, Ohio, a son of the late John and Ophie Hall Carr.
He was a retired operator for Ametek, a member and deacon of First Baptist Church in Raceland, Ky., and a World War II veteran.
Surviving are his loving wife, Hazel Evans Carr; three sons, John (Betty) Carr of Lexington, Ky., Ronnie (Maggie) Carr of Flatwoods and Randy (Cherie) Carr of Santa Maria, Calif.; a sister, Irene Carr Dunn of Huntington, Ind.; four grandchildren, Ellen Robinson, Bryan Carr, Chris Carr and Brittany Nelson; and three great-grandchildren, Reese Robinson, Luke Robinson and Elise Carr.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, April 10, 2008, at Evans Funeral Home in Raceland by the Rev. Charles Blevins and the Rev. Tom Stephens. Burial will be in Bellefonte Memorial Gardens in Flatwoods.
Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to First Baptist Church in Raceland, Ky., or the American Heart Association.

Millard Jackson - 1950-2008
Millard Jackson, 57, of Louisa, Ky., passed away Monday, April 7, 2008, in King’s Daughters Medical Center.
Millard was born Oct. 22, 1950, in Merrimac, W.Va., the son of the late Clarence and Sarah “Ruby” Lee Jackson. He was the owner of Jackson Brothers Auto Center and supervisor at the American Electric Power Plant Big Sandy. He was a U.S. Army veteran and a member of Buchanan Chapel Church.
Survivors include his wife, Donna Dean Jackson; three daughters, Diana and husband Heiko Adams of Shelbyville, Ky., Vanessa and husband Rob Mathieu of Louisa and Lori Andrews of Lancaster, Ohio; two sisters, Shirla Triplett of Obetz, Ohio, and Lucille Diamond of Catlettsburg, Ky.; seven brothers, Homer Jackson of Grove City, Ohio, Donald Jackson of Carroll, Ohio, and James “Speedy” Jackson, Elmer Jackson, Clarence Junior Jackson, Cleve Jackson, and Butch Jackson, all of Louisa; and three grandchildren, Heidi Adams, Alex Adams and Jackson Mathieu.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 9 at Wilson Funeral Home in Louisa by the Rev. Eddie Wiler. Burial will be in Jackson Family Cemetery in Louisa. Military graveside rites will be by members of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Robert E. “Bob” Culp - 1927-2008
Robert E. “Bob” Culp, 80, of Huntington, died Saturday, April 5, 2008, at his residence.
He was born Oct. 27, 1927, in Marion, Ind., a son of the late William H. and Lavona F. Simon Culp.
He was also preceded in death by a brother, Max Culp.
Surviving are his wife, Patricia Fulks Culp, whom he married in 1948; three sons and daughters-in-law, Mike and Amy Culp of Hilton Head, S.C., Tony and Janet Culp of Huntington and Jeff and Lisa Culp of Ashland, Ky.; a sister, Bonnie Hesson of Lexington, Ky.; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Jerry and Margaret Culp of Jacksonville, Fla., and William Culp of Huntington; five grandchildren, Corey Culp of Huntington, Krissy Culp of Florida, Leslie and Nathan Parrish of Huntington, Tyler and Michelle Culp of Ashland and Matthew Born; three great-grandchildren, Koleton Lambert, Kaleb Culp and Taylor Ann Culp; two sisters-in-law, Wanda Burcham of North Carolina and Lois Culp of Groveport, Ohio; and a brother-in-law, Norm and Nell Fulks of Proctorville, Ohio.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 9, 2008, at Henson Mortuary in Huntington by the Rev. Mike Blankenship. Burial will be in Ridgelawn Memorial Park, with full military rites by the VFW Post 9738 Honor Guard, whose members will serve as pallbearers.
Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today, April 8, 2008, at the funeral home.
Mr. Culp was retired car salesman at Galigher Ford. He was a veteran of World War II in the U.S. Navy, serving on the Destroyers USS Saufloy and USS Bancroft in the Atlantic and South Pacific. He was a member of American Legion Post 16 and VFW Post 9738 in Guyandotte, where he served on the Honor Guard Detail. He was a volunteer at the Veterans Administration Medical Center. He loved to play golf, sharing memories of service time with his shipmates during their annual reunions and spending time with his friends at the Barboursville Senior Citizens Center.

James Walter Sullivan, 86, of Grayson, died Monday in Liberty Nursing Home in Wheelersburg, Ohio.

Mary Emily Carter Greene, 88, of McDonough, Ga., formerly of Morehead, died Saturday in McDonough.
She was born Nov. 17, 1919.
Her husband, the Rev. Ted Greene, preceded her in death.

Evelyn Faye Harris Patton, 87, of Winston-Salem, N.C., formerly of Prestonsburg, died Friday in Kate B. Reynolds Hospice House in North Carolina.
She was born March 10, 1921.
Her husband, Chester Patton, survives.
A memorial service was Sunday at Grace Baptist Temple in Winston-Salem.

Anna Larene Thornsburg Dehart, 82, of Morehead, died Sunday at her residence.
She was born April 22, 1925. Her husband, Roy Lee Dehart, preceded her in death.
