George Lewis - 1917-2008

George Rufus Lewis, 90, of Worthington, died Thursday in Our Lady Bellefonte Hospital in Russell following a brief illness.

He was born July 9, 1917, to the late Albert and Ruth Ramsey Lewis in Milton, W.Va. His wife, Pearl Davidson Lewis, died in 2001.

George was a World War II veteran who earned the Silver Star as a corporal of Company K infantry regiment for gallantry in action on Oct. 31, 1944, near St. Remy, France, when he was ordered to move forward at the head of his platoon while firing his automatic rifle and moving toward the German enemy position. He and his comrades repelled the attacked and defended the company’s position. He received a diploma from the French minister of defense in gratitude for his combat years in France during 1944 and 1945.

In 1965, after George moved to Sacramento, Calif., he was honored by the city with a resolution for his part in aiding a victim in a strong-arm robbery attempt. He pursued the suspect and aided in his apprehension. In Sacramento, people claimed he resembled the actor Dennis Morgan and eventually became known as Morgan Lewis by residents of the city. The resolution by the city council was in that name.

He retired from the CSX Car Shops, where he was a blacksmith.

There will be no visitation or funeral service.

Evans Funeral Home in Raceland is in charge of arrangements.

Contributions may be made to the Tri-County Animal Control Center, 47 Doggone Run, Greenup, KY 41144.

Leonard Adkins - 1918-2008

He was the husband of Dorothy A. Adkins, who survives. He was retired from the CSX Railroad as a carman. He was a member and elder of Antioch Christian Church in Warnock and was a sergeant in the U.S. Army, serving in World War II. He was a Kentucky Colonel, former president of the Greenup County Farm Bureau, a member of the Brotherhood of Railway Carman and a farmer.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include three daughters and sons-in-law, Betty and Donald Brown of Argillite, Sue and J.R. Blevins of Lloyd and Barbara and Marvin Nelson of Load; a brother, Richard Adkins of Lloyd; two sisters, Hazel Baker and Faye Johnson, both of Greenup; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
