R.C Meade - 1934 - 2008

R.C. Meade, 73, of Ashland, died Thursday evening at his home following a short illness. He was born Oct. 9, 1934, in Magoffin County, a son of the late Samuel and Gertrude Hamilton Meade. R.C. was a retired locomotive crane operator at AK Steel and enjoyed bluegrass music and playing the banjo.

He also was preceded in death by four brothers, Wannie, James, Andrew and Bob.

Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, David and Melody Meade of Ashland, Timothy and Teresa Meade of Catlettsburg and Mark and Annette Meade of Frankfort; one daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl and Steve Stewart of Ashland; one brother, Sam Meade of Catlettsburg; two sisters, Vertrice Clark of Cleveland, Ohio, and Jeanie Black of Catlettsburg; 10 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Catlettsburg Cemetery.

Larry Cooper - 1937-2008

Larry Norman Cooper, 71, of Ashland died Friday at King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland after a brief illness.

He was born Jan. 10, 1937, in Lawrence County, the son of the late Willie and Hannah Moore Cooper. He was the husband of Leona Boggs Cooper, who survives. They were married for 49 years. He was retired from A.C. Lawrence Leather and attended Tunnel Hill Freewill Baptist Church in Ashland.

He also was preceded in death by two brothers, Cratis Cooper and Wilbur Cooper.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two daughters and one son-in-law, Julia Robin Craig and Norma Jean and Johnny Edwin Fields, all of Ashland; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Raymond and Mary Cooper of Wheelersburg, Eddie and Barbara Cooper of Rush and Arlie and Vera Cooper of Grayson; four sisters and three brothers-in-law, Ann and Don Kleve of Houston, Texas, Thelma Cooper of Webbville, Shirley and Milton Osborne of Blaine and Marlene and Lloyd Fyffe of Grayson; one grandson, Garry Brandon Yates; one granddaughter, Whitney Brianne Fields; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Steen Funeral Home — Central Avenue Chapel, with Pastor Bill Oaks and the Rev. Bob Baldridge officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Brandon Yates, Garry Yates, Milford Thornberry, Tim, Keith and Bryan Boggs, Rodney Slone and Gaylord Terry.

Honorary pallbearers will be Elwood Boggs, Delbert Boggs Jr., Richard Boggs, Amos Thornberry, Elisha Stevens Jr. and Herman Manning.

Glen Greene - 1922-2008

Glen L. Greene, 85, of Ashland passed away Friday morning, April 4, 2008, at Woodland Oaks Health Care Facility in Ashland. He was born October 15, 1922, in Greenup, the son of the late Everett and Elizabeth Griffith Greene. Glen honored our great nation by protecting and preserving our freedom during World War II in the European and Middle Eastern/African Theaters of Operation. He was a Bronze Star recipient with the United States Army Air Corp. He retired from the Halzit Division of Ashland Oil after 43 years, attended Grassland Community Church, serving as Sunday school superintendent for many years, and was a member of Greenhill Masonic Lodge for 60 years as a Scottish Rite 32 Degree Mason. Glen was a happy person, loved to farm and be with people.

Sadly left behind is his adoring wife of 61 years, Carla Fannin Greene; a daughter, Patty Cassity, her husband John, of Katy, Texas; one grandchild and two great-grandchildren.

Preceding him in death are three brothers, Aubrey Greene, Vernon Greene and Ralph Greene; and a sister, Edith Asbell.

A funeral service in honor of Glen Greene will be 11 a.m. Monday, April 7, 2008, at Kilgore & Collier Funeral Home on Panola Street in Catlettsburg. Words of comfort and faith will be offered by Pastor David Herndon. Final rest will follow at Ashland Cemetery.

Those wishing to pay their respects to the Greene family may do so between the hours of 6 and 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Masonic rites observed at 8 p.m.

Geneve Dillow - 1941-2008

Geneve Dillow, age 66, of Flatwoods, Ky., died Wednesday, April 2, 2008, in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland.

She was born Oct. 28, 1941, in Ashland, Ky., a daughter of the late Clyde Dillow and Virginia L. Blevins Dillow.

She was also preceded in death by two brothers-in-law, Paul Maynard and Billy R. Kinder; and one brother, William Thomas “Russ” Dillow.

She was a master beautician with Foundation of Beauty Salon with 30 + years of service.

Surviving are special friends, Mike Seagraves and Michael Anthony Seagraves, both of Flatwoods and Sheena Kirk of Ashland; one daughter, Melissa K. Adams of Flatwoods; one grandchild, Robert Lee Westfall of Flatwoods; one great-grandchild, Cameron Ryan Lee Westfall of Flatwoods; and two sisters, Kathleen Maynard of Ironton, Ohio, and Garnet Kinder of Summit, Ky.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday, April 7, 2008 at Lazear Funeral Home Chapel in Ashland by the Rev. Jim Smedley.

Friends may call one hour before the service Monday, April 7, 2008 at the funeral home.



Wendell Coffey - 1944-2008

Wendell R. Coffey, 63, of Greenup passed away Friday, April 4, 2008, at his home with his family by his side. Mr. Coffey was born April 25, 1944, in Flatwodos, a son of the late Langley and Rosa Sarks Coffey.

He was a retired heavy equipment operator and a member of the IUOE Local 181 in Ashland for 42 years.

He also was preceded in death by one sister, Lena Hawkins.

Survivors include his wife of 31 years, Cheryl Diane Hartley Coffey; one son, Brien (Charlotte) Coffey of Greenup; one stepson, John (Cynthia) Rice of Scotts Bluff, Ariz.; one daughter, Cathy (Jess) Coffey of Petoskey, Mich.; three brothers, Paul Coffey of Raceland, Ronald Coffey of Summit and Curtis Coffey of Flatwoods; five sisters, Christine Hamilton of Wurtland, Marie Potter of Flatwoods, Lula Danner of Danleyton, Faye Hensley of Argillite and Grace Woods of Greenup; four grandchildren, Charles Coffey, Alexis Coffey, Hayden Coffey and Hunter Coffey; three step-grandchildren, Anthony Rice, Brian Rice and Celeste Rice; and two adopted grandchildren, Maisie Jackson and Elizabeth Jackson.

Funeral will be 1 p.m. Monday at Reed Funeral Home in Greenup by Bishop James Daniels. Burial will be in Danleyton Cemetery.

Friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. today and one hour before the service on Monday at the funeral home.



Hazel Lucas - 1929-2008

Hazel Irene Lucas, 78, of Rush left this earth on April 4, 2008, to rejoice in Heaven with her husband of 57 years, Clarence Eugene “Bug” Lucas. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She was a member of the Kilgore United Methodist Church. She was born Dec. 11, 1929, in Carter County, a daughter of the late Frank and Myrtle McWhorter Davis.

She also was preceded in death by one brother Norman “Russ” Davis; and one sister, Lois Adkins.

Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Charlie and Lucretia Lucas of Whitesville, W.Va.; two daughters and one son-in-law, Susie and Eddie Conley and Sarah Jo Savage, both of Rush; one brother and sister-in-law, Harvey and Linda Davis of Rush; three sisters and one brother-in-law, Jenny Carroll of Hitchins, Margie Carroll of Rush, and Linda and Ronnie Jones of Ashland; four grandchildren, Christie (Shannon) Wells, Susan Ferguson of Rush, Jamie (Donna) Conley of Rockvale, Tenn., and Brandon (Amanda) Bowling of Whitesville; eight great-grandchildren, Seth, Alyssa and Zach Wells and Wyatt Ferguson, all of Rush, Lisa and Kyle Sanders and Brooke Conley, all of Rockvale, and Calleigh Bowling of Whitesville.

Funeral will be 1 p.m. Monday at Kilgore United Methodist Church by the Minister Fred Wiles. Calling hours for friends will be after 5 p.m. today at the church. Burial will be in East Carter County Memorial Gardens.

Nettie Bear - 1944-2008

Nettie Carroll Bear, 63, of Olive Hill passed away Friday, April 4, 2008, at her home after a lengthy illness. She was born April 25, 1944, in Elliott County, the daughter of the late Charles and Lizzie Thornsberry Carroll.

She was a homemaker and a Christian. She was a loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother, friend and neighbor to all who knew her.

She also was preceded in death by her loving husband, Ova “Yogi” Bear; one son, James Douglas Colley; and one brother, Tommy Carroll.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Ova Shannon and Candace Bear of Lexington and Chris and April Colley of Winchester; one daughter, Lisa Kiser of Olive Hill; three brothers, Zion Carroll of Alliance, Ohio, Lonnie Carroll of Grayson and Norwood Carroll of Olive Hill; three sisters, Nona Hurley of Olive Hill, Virgie Crockett of Columbus, Ohio and Dazel Rodgers of Olive Hill; four grandhcildren, Mitchell Kiser, Carissa Colley, Chelsea Colley and Charity Colley; a very special friend, Debra Burchett; several stepchildren and grandchildren; and a multitude of other close family members, friends and neighbors.

Funeral will be 1 p.m. Monday at Oney-Henderson Funeral Home in Olive Hill. Burial will be in the Bear Family Cemetery.

Visitation will be after 6 p.m. today and before the services on Monday at the funeral home.



William Niswonger - 1938-2008

William Elwood Niswonger, 69, passed away early Saturday morning April 5, 2008, at the Pattie A. Clay Regional Medical Center. He was the husband of Barbara Reynolds Niswonger, who survives. He was born April 20, 1938, in Dayton, Ohio, the son of the late William Leon and Mary Evelyn Kirkman Niswonger. He was of the Nazarene faith. He had served in the Marine Corps and was also a district sales manager with Western-Southern Life Insurance Company for 28 years.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, inlcude one son, Aaron Niswonger of Ashland, Kentucky; two daughters, Tammy Gorham (Barry) of Lexington and Mary Stebbins of West Alexandria, Ohio; six grandchildren, Sara Rathaur, Hayley Stebbins, Justin Stebbins, Aaron Jarrod Niswonger, Nicole Niswonger, and Angela Niswonger; a very special brother, Rick Niswonger and a very special sister, Connie McKinney; and 15 additional brothers and sisters.

He also was preceded in death by a great-granddaughter, Natawnie Rathaur.

Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Fairview Cemetery in West Alexandria, Ohio, with the Rev. Rob Hale officiating.

Graveside visitation will be Tuesday from 10:30 a.m. until the time of service.

Honorary pallbearers will be Joe Murphy, Harry Cyrus, Matthew Glancey, Mike McKinney, John Maggard, Bill Stapleton, Rob Hale, Jim Frump, Rick Niswonger, Justin Stebbins, Aaron Niswonger and Barry Gorham. Jacqueline Brown - 1941-2008

Jacqueline Brown, 67, of Elliott County passed away Friday, April 4, 2008, at the St. Claire Regional Medical Center in Morehead.

She was born Jan 16, 1941, in Hamilton, Ohio, the daughter of the late Raymond Vernon and Eva Jewell Halcomb Collins. She was the wife of Melvin Ray Brown Sr., who survives. She was a homemaker and was of the Apostolic faith.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include four children, Pam and her husband, Phil Bardis of Pleasureville, Karen Brown of Goshin, Ohio, Melvin Brown Jr. of Morehead and David Brown of Louisville; five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild; two brothers, James Ray Collins of Dayton andJohn Vernon Collins of Eaton, Ohio, and two sisters, Joan Faye Wilson of Cincinnati and Judith Ann Reynolds of Atlanta, Texas.

Funeral will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Lewis & Ferguson Funeral Home in Sandy Hook, with Minister Michael Anderson officiating. Burial will be in Brown Family Cemetery.

May Belle Ford - 1924-2008

May Belle Holland Ford, 84, of Burlington, loving wife and mother, went to be with the Lord, Thursday, April 3, 2008, at Heartland of Riverview Care Center in South Point. May Belle was born February 19, 1924, in Proctorville, a daughter of the late Joseph and Bertha Howard Holland. She was a member of the A.M.E. Methodist Church of Huntington and a homemaker.

She also was preceded in death by her husband, James H. Ford; three sisters, Vinda Wilson, Lillian Poe and Nancy Holland; two brothers, Myles Holland and Marion Holland; and a special niece, Patricia Redman.

She is survived by her loving and caring son, Larry B. Ford of Burlington; two sisters, Mary Hayslip and Martha (Allen) Lease of Burlington; two brothers, Hoover Holland and Bill Holland, both of Columbus; four special nieces, Beverly Scott, Johnnie Mae (Doc) Martin, Beatrice Ferguson and Debbie Howell; six special nephews, Roger (Claudia) Holland, Jack (Dorothy) Holland, Richard (Barbara) Ford, Alvin (Teresa) Chambers, Herbert (Debbie) Holland Jr. and Billie Holland Jr.; and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 8, 2008, at Schneider-Griffin Funeral Home in Chesapeake, with the Rev. Gary L. Edwards officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Memorial Gardens in South Point.

Vickie Steele - 1963-2008

Vickie Lee Steele, 44, of Franklin Furnace went peacefully to her maker on Wednesday, April 2, 2008, at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus. She was born Dec. 20, 1963, in Portsmouth, Ohio, the third child of Judith Steele of Franklin Furnace and the late Erbie Steele. Vickie was a graduate of Green High School and enjoyed shopping at yard sales and babysitting for family members whom she always had an abundance of hugs and kisses for.

She is survived by her mother, Judith Steele and Bill Summers; also surviving are her companion of 11 years, Larry Yates and his son, Timothy; a sister, Peggy (Carl) Blanton; a brother, Erbie (Shanda) Steele; four nephews, Ron, Joe and Matt Blanton and Damien Jarrell; a niece, Olivia Evans; two great-nephews, Hunter Sallie and Carson Blanton; and two great-nieces, Mattie and Riley Blanton.

Besides her father, she also was preceded in death by a sister, Cheryl Steele.

Funeral services will take place at 2 p.m. today at Harrison-Pyles Funeral Home in Wheelersburg, with Pastor Charles Green officiating. Burial will be in Junior Furnace Cemetery.

Ina Bernice Patton Hamm, 73, of Olive Hill died Friday at St. Claire Regional Medical Center in Morehead.

Onida Roar Baker, 59, of Columbus, Ohio, died Friday.

Dixie Williams Fyffe, 96, of Webbville died Saturday in the Elliott County Nursing Home.

Michael Stone - 1956-2008

Michael Anthony Stone, 52, of Vanceburg died Friday at his home.

He was born March 20, 1956, in Crawford County, Ohio.

His wife, Rita Butler Stone, Survives.

Funeral will be 1 p.m. Monday at Globe Funeral Chapel in Camp Dix. Burial will be in Smith-Gilliam Cemetery on Laurel Creek Road in Lewis County.

Visitation will be after 5 p.m. today and anytime before the service on Monday at the funeral chapel.



Carlene Klaiber - 1959-2008

Carlene Gail (Teenie) Klaiber, 48, of Ironton died Friday at Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland.

She was born Oct. 10, 1959, in Lawrence County, Ohio.

Her husband, Richard “Rick” Klaiber, survives.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Phillips Funeral Home in Ironton. Burial will be in Vernon Furnace Cemetery.

Visitation will be after 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.
