William “Tob” Adkins - 1936-2008

William “Tob” Adkins, 72, of Ashland, KY, formerly of Huntington, W.Va., passed away Sunday, March 30, 2008, in Shands University of Florida in Gainesville, Fla.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Reger Funeral Chapel in Huntington, W.Va., by the Rev. Calvin Freeman. Burial will follow in Woodmere Memorial Park in Huntington.

He was born March 19, 1936, in Wayne County, W.Va., a son of the late William Tolbert Adkins Sr. and Julius Marion Smith Adkins Cox.

He was a retired machinist from Portec Rail of Huntington and was a retired employee of the former Conner Steel Co. of Huntington. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church of Huntington and the American Legion.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a stepfather, George Cox; a sister, Marion Jean Adkins; two aunts and three uncles, Reba and Charlie Smith, Ada and Edison Bowen and uncle Grandville Fisher.

Survivors include his wife, Jadie Smith Adkins; three daughters and one son-in-law, Jeanie and Chris Beckett of Huntington, Cricket Adkins of Arizona and Kim Turley of Huntington; six grandchildren; one great- granddaughter; a special aunt, Opal Fisher of Lavalette, W.Va.; mother-in-law, Patsy Smith of Wayne, W.Va. and his buddy Chopper.

Howard P. Hall VFW Post 1064 of Huntington will conduct graveside military rites.

Friends may call from noon to 2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.



Ray Shepherd - 1913-2008

Ray W. Shepherd, of Rush, Ky., passed away Monday evening, March 31, 2008, in King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland, Ky.

Mr. Shepherd was 94 years of age, born Aug. 31, 1913, in Rush, the son of the late James H. and Hannah Lakin Shepherd.

He served honorably at the will of our great nation during World War II at Camp Perry, Va. Following the war, Ray returned home to his dairy farm and began sharing the next 64 years with his adoring wife, Bertha Smith Shepherd.

Ray was a wonderful husband and father, was always spoken well of by others, never uttered a cross word, and will always be remembered as a good friend and neighbor.

Along with his wife, Ray leaves behind his children, Jimmy Shepherd, Jess Shepherd and John Wayne Shepherd, all of Rush, William Ray (Mary) Shepherd of Mount Verde, Fla., Jo Ann (Don) Stovall of Stanfield, Ariz., Rebecca (Jim) Vaughn of Rush and Hannah Shepherd of Flatwoods, Ky.; 10 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Preceding him in death are three brothers, Carl Shepherd, Jess Shepherd and John Shepherd; and four sisters, Mary Green, Georgia Stapleton, Sophia Clay and Kate Shepherd.

A funeral service in remembrance of Ray Shepherd will be at 1 p.m. Friday, April 4, 2008, at the Neal Funeral Home on Center Street in Catlettsburg. Words of comfort and inspiration will be offered by Pastors Johnny Moore and Mac Ferrell. Final rest will follow at Klaiber Cemetery in Rush.

Calling hours will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.



Gary Lee Thomas - 1943-2008

Gary Lee Thomas died Wednesday, March 26, 2008, in the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington, Ky.

Gary was born Aug. 16, 1943, in Portsmouth, Ohio, son of the late Mary Thomas Noll.

Surviving Gary are his wife, Harriette Swart Thomas of Versailles; two sons, Mark Thomas of Washington, D.C. and Kevin Thomas of Lexington; and a daughter, Kelly Thomas of San Francisco. He is survived by two brothers, Doug Huffman of Florida and Jim Noll of Lexington. Also surviving are one uncle, Bob Thomas of Raceland, Ky.

Preceding Gary in death were twin sisters, Carol and Connie Huffman; maternal grandparents Hanson B. and Eunice Pierce Thomas and great-grandparents, Sam and Mary Nichols Pierce of Greenup County. Also preceding him in death were two stepfathers, Sol R. Huffman and Carl I. Noll. He will be missed by nieces, nephews, cousins, colleagues and friends.

Gary attended the Assemblies of God Church in Raceland, Ky. He graduated from Raceland High School in 1961 and served in the U.S. Marine Corps. Gary graduated from the University of Kentucky where he received a M.A. degree in social work and a B.A. degree in anthropology. He was a retired supervisor social worker from Kentucky State and enjoyed working on his farm.

Gary and Harriette loved traveling and had just returned from a trip to Europe.

A memorial celebration of Gary’s life was held at Clark’s Funeral Home in Versailles on Saturday, March 29, 2008. Following the memorial, a reception was held at Gary and Harriette’s home in Versailles.

Mamie Alice Hall Harris - 1920-2008

Mamie Alice Hall Harris, 87, of Grayson, departed this world in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland on March 31, 2008 with her loving family by her side.

Mrs. Harris was born Aug. 24, 1920, in Fleming County, Ky., the daughter of the late M.K. and Lona Rice Hall of Fleming County.

She was a member of the Olive Hill United Methodist Church. Mrs. Harris was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. J.C. Harris. The Harris’s spent their entire life working the United Methodist Church in the Ashland and Maysville District ministering for the Lord.

She was preceded in death by six brothers, Milford Hall, Malon Hall, M. Bill Hall, Mack Hall, Marcus Fred Hall and Marion Lee Hall and three sisters, Mary Harris, Dora Kidd and Myrtle Watson, all of Fleming County.

She is survived by one son, James A. and (Dianne) Harris; two daughters, Lucille and (Noah) Gregory and Beulah Taylor and the late L.C. Taylor, all of Grayson; grandchildren, Alicia Taylor of Means, Ky., Christopher and (Debbie) Harris of Grayson, Cameron and (Erin) Gregory of Samaria, Mich., Kristin and (Keith) Naszradi of Lambertville, Mich., and Michael Taylor of Jacksonville, Fla.; and great-grandchildren, Megan, Mathew and Mitchell Porter of Means, LaShae Naszradi of Lambertville and Alex and Brant Harris of Grayson. She is also survived by two sisters-in-law, Monnie Hall of Morehead, Ky., and Mable Hall of Dayton, Ohio; and by a special nephew, Hollie Harris and his wife, Jorene of Bean Station, Tenn.; and lots of nieces and nephews and special friends, Tom, Jennifer and Jarid Mattingly of Olive Hill.

Pallbearers for Mrs. Harris include Christopher Harris, Cameron Gregory, Mathew Porter, Jarid Mattingly, George Kiser and Keith Nazradi. Honorary pallbearers are Hollie Harris, Eugene Hall, Mitchell Porter and Tom Mattingly.

Funeral services will be today, April 3 at 11 a.m. at Sparks Funeral Home in Grayson by Brad Smart and Phil Hogg. Burial will be in Olive Hill Memorial Park.

Linda King Everman - 1959-2008

Linda King Everman, 49, of Grayson, Ky., passed away Monday, March 31, 2008, the result of an automobile accident.

She was born Jan. 5, 1959, in Morehead, Ky., the daughter of Robert M. King of Grayson and the late Phyllis Griffith King.

She was also preceded in death by a brother, Johnny M. King; and a sister, Iva J. King.

Linda was an independent contractor providing services to The Independent. She was of the Baptist faith.

In addition to her father, she is survived by two sons, Marshall C. Nelson and Arthur K. Nelson, both of Grayson; one daughter, Ruth A. Nelson of West Virginia; three sisters, Frances (John) Nelson of Waterloo, Ohio, Edna (Paul) Nelson of Pedro, Ohio, and Freida Hatfield of Owingsville, Ky.; two brothers, Robert L. King and Alva (Becky) King, both of Grayson; three grandsons; one granddaughter; 16 nieces and nephews; 12 great-nieces and great-nephews; a special companion of 24 years, Timmy Ray Everman and a host of friends.

Funeral services will be Friday, April 4, 2008, at 2:30 p.m. at the Malone Funeral Home in Grayson with Ray Simmons minister. Burial will be in Fultz Cemetery in Olive Hill, Ky.

Visitation will be today, April 3 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Michael Ramey - 1967-2008

Michael James Ramey, 41, of Newport, Mich., died Sunday at his residence.

He was born Jan. 8, 1967, in Detroit.

Bonnie McCloud, 92, of Grayson, died Wednesday in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland.

Bonnie Ferguson Pack, 99, of Piqua, Ohio, died Tuesday in Piqua Manor in Piqua.

Her husband, Orbin Pack, preceded her in death.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Herald & Stewart & Halsey Funeral Home in West Liberty. Burial will be in Coffee Cemetery in West Liberty.

Irene Vest

Irene McGuire Vest, 90, of West Liberty, died Tuesday in Morgan County Appalachian Regional Hospital in West Liberty.

Her husband, Drexel Vest, preceded her in death.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Herald & Stewart & Halsey Funeral Home in West Liberty. Burial will be in Ezel Cemetery.

Klotine Wagoner

Klotine Wagoner, 90, of Isonville, died Wednesday in Carter Nursing and Rehabilitation in Grayson.

Her husband, Cecil Wagoner, preceded her in death.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Waddell & Whitt Funeral Home in Sandy Hook. Burial will be in Elliott County Memory Gardens.

Mary Smith - 1934-2008

Mary Elizabeth Arms Smith, 73, of Sitka, died Tuesday at her residence.

She was born May 17, 1934, in Johnson County.

Her husband, Ken Smith, preceded her in death.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Jones-Preston Funeral Home in Paintsville. Burial will be in Highland Memorial Park in Staffordsville.

Emalene Mullins - 1930-2008

Emalene Mullins, 77, of Meally, died Tuesday in Dover Manor Nursing Home in Georgetown.

She was born July 20, 1930, in Johnson County.

Her husband, Dewey Mullins, died in 1998.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Buffalo United Baptist Church. Burial will be in Highland Memorial Park in Staffordsville.

Roger Depriest - 1951-2008

Roger L. Depriest, 56, of Hanging Rock, died Tuesday at his residence.

He was born Nov. 4, 1951, in Lawrence County.

His wife, Carolyn Lewis Depriest, survives.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Tracy Brammer Funeral Home in Ironton. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery in Ironton.

Louis Yates Sr. - 1943-2008

Louis Wetzel Yates Sr., 64, of South Point, died Tuesday at his residence.

He was born Dec. 21, 1943, in Grayson, Ky.

His wife, Linda Lou Massie Yates, died in 1998.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Phillips Funeral Home in Ironton. Burial will be in Palestine Cemetery.
