George H. Lenning (1926-2008)

George H. Lenning passed away quietly at home Saturday, March 29, 2008.

He was born April 26, 1926, in Schenectady, N.Y., the son of the late George and Mildred Wade Lenning. He also was preceded in death by his mother-in-law, Mamie B. Meade, and a sister-in-law, Wilma Bartle.

He graduated from Fairmont High School in Dayton, Ohio, attended Dartmouth College and graduated from Brown University. Mr. Lenning proudly served in the U.S. Navy in World War II and the Korean conflict as an executive officer aboard several minesweepers. After WWII, he joined Frigidare Corp. in Dayton in the engineering department before returning to military service in the early 1950s.

In 1953, he moved to Ashland and acquired a Frigidaire dealership which he operated successfully as The George Lenning Co. for nearly two decades. Thereafter, Mr. Lenning had a successful career in the heating and refrigeration industry with several well-known national companies. He retired and returned to Ashland in the mid-1980s with his devoted wife, Faye (Bartle) Lenning. They cherished their large family and traveled extensively both in the United States and abroad, and especially enjoyed their many riverboat cruises.

Mr. Lenning is survived by his loving wife, Faye, and seven children: Eric (Lynn) Lenning of Cincinnati, Kristan Lenning of Lexington, Mark Lenning of Huntington, LIsa O’Dell of Cincinnati, Anita (Edsel Jr.) Fitzpatrick of Ashland, Barbara (Robert) Niesel of Cincinnati, and Marsha (Gordon) Farmer of Ashland; 11 grandchildren, Brad (Patty) Lenning, Blaire (Drew) Schlosser, Megan O’Dell, Corbin (Brynn) Fitzpatrick, Aaron (Vicky) Fitzpatrick, Rebekah (Ray) Williams, Jacob Daniels, Cody Daniels, Nicole Niesel, Jennifer (Joe) Templin and Rob (Jennifer) Neisel. Mr. Lenning also leaves 10 great-grandchildren, Jaden Schlosser, Parker WIlliams, Carter Williams, Kata Crizer, Harlea Fitzpatrick, Cavin Fitzpatrick, Conner Templin, Owen Templin, Jordan Niesel, Gracie Niesel and Izzy Lenning, due to arrive in May. Also surviving is his sister, Dorothy (Paul) Keye, nephews Paul Jr. and William Keye and a brother-in-law, Charles Bartle.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. today and after 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Steen Funeral Home-Ashland Chapel.

Funeral services will be at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home by the Rev. Michael Pennington. Burial will be in Bellefonte Memorial Gardens.

James Orville Wells (1940- 2008)

James Orville Wells, 67, of Westwood, husband of Evelyn Adams Wells, died Saturday morning at Community Hospice Care Center following an extended illness.

Mr. Wells was born Nov. 9, 1940, in Westwood, son of the late Orville and Mary Evelyn Helton Wells. James was a retired lab technician from Kentucky Electric Steel and was of the Baptist faith. He was also a member of the VFW Post 76 and the Ashland Eagles Daniel Boone Aeries.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are two sons; Jimmy and Tim Wells of Westwood; two daughters; Paulette Clark and husband Rusty of Princess and Tammy Sue Wells of Cannonsburg; two brothers; Gary Richard Wells of Melbourne, Fla., and Charles Wells of Westwood; two sisters, Sharon Callihan of Westwood and Charlene See of Ashland; and four grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Preston Family Funeral Home in Ashland by the Rev. Ron Riley. Burial will be in Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens.

Mollie Jean Johnson (1934-2008)

Mollie Jean Johnson, 73, of Westwood, widow of Tilsman J. Johnson, died Saturday evening at Community Hospice Care Center following an extended illness.

Mrs. Johnson was born April 3, 1934, in Boyd County, a daughter of the late Andy and Pauline Sanders Cheek. She was of the Baptist Faith and was a member of the former Arky Stars Square Dancers Club.

Preceding her in death, in addition to her parents, are her brothers and sisters and a grandson, Nicholas Ray Johnson.

Surviving include a son; Timothy Ray Johnson of Summitt; a daughter; Gail Lynn Waugh of Westwood; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday by the Rev. Roger Bonzo at Preston Family Funeral Home in Ashland. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in the Ashland Cemetery.

Harold Robert Miller (1929-2008)

Harold Robert Miller, 78, of Russell, died Saturday in Fountain Head Nursing Home in Franklin Furnace.

Mr. Miller was born Nov. 21, 1929, in Newport, a son of the late Samuel Henry and Ester Hickey Miller.

His wife, Sylvia Roby Miller, survives.

Mr. Miller was a retired clerk for C&O Railway, a teacher at Wurtland High School and president of H.R. Miller Co. Inc. He was a member of Rose Hill Baptist Church.

Mr. Miller was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force as a A/1C air operations specialist and special services during the Korean War.

A 1948 graduate of Raceland High School, he attended Western Kentucky University and the University of Kentucky, majoring in geology and seismology.

He was a former president of the Greenup County Fish and Game Association, a Kentucky representative of the National Wildlife Federation, former vice president of the League of Kentucky Sportsmen, a charter member of Greenbo Recreation Association, a charter member of Russell Junior Football League, a past committee member of FIVCO and past president of Russell Babe Ruth League.

Also preceding Mr. Miller in death were a brother, Joseph A. Miller, and a sister, Sammy Eilene Perlmutter.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, David R. Miller of Bowling Green and Daniel A. and Donna Miller of Sarasota, Fla.; and three granddaughteres, Erin M. (Dan) Hardin of Louisville, Wendi E. Miller of Louisville and Amy B. Miller of Frankfort.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Carman Funeral Home in Flatwoods with pastor Ken Gowin and brother Jim Yates. Burial will be in Bellefonte Memorial Gardens in Flatwoods.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

There will be military rites provided by VFW James B. Cox Memorial Post 8850 of Ironton.

Danny B. Childers (1965-2008)

Danny B. “Duck” Childers, 43, of Elliott County passed away suddenly in Spartanburg, S.C., after a sudden illness.

He was born March 5, 1965, in Carter County, a son of the late Earl B .Childers and Mary Belle Steele Childers Capps of Ashland.

He was a truck driver, a member of the Sandy Hook American Legion and a veteran of the U.S. Army National Guard.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by a close companion, Loretta Seagraves of Elliott County; one daughter, Jessica Dawn Childers of Flatwoods; two step-children, Jonathan Seagraves and Ashley Seagraves, both of Elliott County; one brother, Earl (Gina) Childers of Davy’s Run; and one sister, Sherry (Michael) Hale of Sandy Hook.

He was preceded in death by a twin brother, Paul Allen Childers, step-father Vernon Dale Capps, and a grandmother, Cora Mae Hall.

Pallbearers will be Jonathan Seagraves, Ervin Fultz, Ronnie Skaggs, Jack Hall, Chris Hall and Eddie Riggs.

Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. today at the Hall Family Cemetery on Canoe Run with Tommy Harris, minister. Sparks Funeral Home in Grayson is in charge of arrangements.

Stephen Dale Morgan, 73, of Rock Camp, Ohio, died Saturday at his residence.

He is survived by his wife, Lydia Margaret McClelland Morgan.

Peggy Ann Vaughan, 78, of Ashland, died Sunday in King’s Daughters Medical Center.

Margaret Jean Bennett Hulet

Margaret Jean Bennett Hulet, 81, of Catlettsburg, died Sunday at Hospice House of Huntington.

William Moore (1923-2008)

William Moore, 84, of Wurtland, died Satuarday at King’s Daughters Medical Center.

Mr. Moore was born Nov. 26, 1923, and was the husband of Pauline Murphy Moore.

Funeral arrangements will be at a later date. Burial will be in Hilton Cemetery on Rt. 2 in Greenup. There is no visitation.

Chrissie Ethel Hagans

Chrissie Ethel Haggans, 92, of Langley, widow of Ralph “Bud” Hagans, died Sunday in Highlands Regional Medical Center in Prestonsburg.

Mrs. Hagans was born Oct. 10, 1915.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Hall Funeral Home in Martin. Burial will follow in Hagans Cemetery in Langley.



Kenneth Gray Rollo Lewis (2008–2008)

Kenneth Gray Rollo Lewis, infant son of Wayne and Angela Lewis, was stillborn Friday.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today at the Lacy Creek Church of Christ.Burial will be in the Dawson Cemetery at Lacy Creek. Potter Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Carla Mae Bowden (1950-2008)

Carla Mae Bowden, 57, of Vanceburg, died Saturday at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington.

Mrs. Bowden was born Sept. 28, 1950, and was the wife of Timothy Bowden.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Vanceburg Christian Church. Burial will be in Lewis County Memory Gardens in Black Oak.

Friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. today and from 8 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at Gaydos Funeral Home in Vanceburg.

Terry Summers (1940-2008)

Terry F. Summers, 67, of Ironton, formerly of Pedro, died Friday at his residence.

Mr. Summers was born July 15, 1940, in Ironton, and was the husband of Yvonne Sanders Summers.

Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Etna Cemetery.
