Martha Davis (1923 - 2008)

Martha Francis Davis, 84, of Ashland, passed peacefully from this life to be with her heavenly father on Friday, March 28, 2008, at her home.

She was born April 22, 1923, in Catlettsburg, a daughter of the late Corbett and Ester Newcomb Davis. She was a teletype specialist with Armco Steel for 38 years and a member of Rose Hill Baptist Church. Martha was vivacious and full of life, loving to travel with her sister, who was her greatest companion.

Sadly left behind is her family, a sister, Maxine Vanhoose Borders; and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death are two brothers, Eddy Davis, Carl Davis and two sisters, Euetta Davis and Bea Bolunger.

A funeral service to honor Martha Davis will be at 7 p.m. Sunday at Neal Funeral Home on Center Street in Catlettsburg. Words of comfort will be offered by Pastor Charles Stewart. Final rest will be at Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens in Ashland following a committal service at 10 a.m. Monday.

Those wishing to pay respects to Ms. Davis’ family may do so between the 5 and 7 p.m. Sunday prior to the service.



Betty T. Samworth (1924-2008)

Betty T. Samworth, 84, of Ashland, died Friday, March 28, 2008, at Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland. The McDowell County, W.Va., native was born Jan. 15, 1924, the daughter of the late Jesse and Kate Darnell Taylor. She was the wife of the late Harry B. Samworth.

She was a graduate of St. Mary’s Nursing School in Huntington. She was a registered nurse at King’s Daughters Medical Center and retired as a nursing supervisor there. She was of the Christian faith and a member of the Wednesday Bridge Club.

Survivors include three daughters, Leslie Vaughan and her husband, Jeff, of Ashland, Sally Young and her husband, Bill, of Lewistown, Mich., and Betsy Kelley of Tampa, Fla.; two sisters, Jessie Kennedy of Fayetteville, N.C., and Sue Craig and her husband, Wayne, of Coraopolis, Pa.; five grandchildren, Brad (Nicole) Vaughan, Taylor (Ashley) Vaughan, Chris (Natasha) Davis, Rob Davis and Billy Kelley; and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Miller Funeral Home in Ashland by the Rev. Lee Gussler. Burial will be in Woodmere Cemetery in Huntington, W.Va.

Friends may call from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 15120 Collections Center Drive, Chicago, Ill. 60693.



Betty Downs (1925-2008)

Betty Eskridge Downs, 82, of Ashland, died Friday, March 28, 2008, at King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland. The Nottingham, England, native was born Aug. 12, 1925. She was the wife of the late Gene B. Eskridge. She was a former employee of the Thrift Drug Store, K-Mart and Woolco. She was a member of the First Baptist Church and served in the Women’s Land Army in England during World War II.

She also was preceded in death by a great-granddaughter, Erica Hayes; and a sister, Grace.

Survivors include two daughters, Brenda Hayes of Ashland and Janet Bagby and her husband, Bob, of Flatwoods; three grandchildren, Eric (Chrissey) Hayes, Drew (Carlyle) Bagby and Tyler (Jessica) Bagby; two great-grandchildren, Erin Hayes and Jon Hayes; and best friend and neighbor, Betty Woodward.

A memorial service will be at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Calvary Episcopal Church, 1337 Winchester Ave., Ashland, Ky. 41101.

Miller Funeral Home in Ashland is in charge of the arrangements.



Danny B. Childers (1965-2008)

Danny B. Childers, 43, of Elliott County, passed away suddenly in Spartanburg, S.C., after a sudden illness.

He was born in Carter County, a son of the late Earl B. Childers and Mary Belle Steele Childers Capps of Grayson.

He was a truck driver, a member of the Sandy Hook American Legion and a veteran of the United States Army National Guard.

In addition to his mother he is survived by a close companion, Loretta Seagraves of Elliott County; one daughter, Jessica Dawn Childers of Flatwoods; two step-children; Jonathan Seagraves and Ashley Seagraves, both of Elliott County; one brother, Earl (Gina) Childers of Davy’s Run; and one sister, Sherry (Michael) Hall of Sandy Hook.

He was preceded in death by a twin brother, Paul Allen Childers; step-father, Vernon Dale Capps; and a grandmother, Cora Mae Hale.

Pallbearers will be Jonathan Seagraves, Ervin Fultz, Ronnie Skaggs, Jack Hall, Chris Hall and Eddie Riggs.

Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Hall Family Cemetery on Canoe Run, with Terry Harris, minister.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Sparks Funeral Home in Grayson.

Birdie Hale Shartzer (1936-2008)

Birdie Shartzer, 72, of Grayson, passed away Friday at her residence. She was born March 26,1936, in Carter County, a daughter of the late Fred and Minnie Thomas Hale.

She was a retired postal worker. She was a member of the First Church of Christ in Grayson.

She is survived by her husband, Samuel Shartzer of Grayson; two daughters, Eva Marie Waggoner and Amelia Shartzer Ruth, both of Grayson; four grandchildren, Amber Leigh Carper, Samuel Aaron Pennington, Laura Ellen Walker and Ryan Franklin Brown; and two great-grandchildren, Darrah Trace Carper and Thomas Aaron Curtis Pennington.

She also was preceded in death by three sisters and six brothers.

Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Monday at the East Carter County Memory Gardens.

The family will receive friends after 4 p.m. Monday at her residence, 125 South Hord Street Grayson. Arrangements are by the Sparks Funeral Home in Grayson.

Dorothy Moore (1925-2008)

Dorothy Aretta Moore, 83, of Louisa died Friday, March 28, 2008, at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Huntington, W.Va., following a stroke. She was born Feb. 21, 1925, in Louisa to the late Emma Short Rice and David Lige Rice. She was a housewife and loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. On Oct. 13, 1947, she was united in marriage with Ralph Moore. She attended Myrtle Chapel Church.

She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Ralph Moore; her sister and brother, Sara Rice and Jack Rice, both of Louisa; her daughter and son and their spouses, Susan and Dan Gipson of Villa Hills and Eli and Laura Moore of Danville; her grandchildren, Stephanie and Rob Wessel of Crescent Springs, Bill Dotson of Lexington and Jacob and Emma Moore of Danville; and her great-grandchild, Sylvia Nicole Wessel of Villa Hills.

She also was preceded in death by her brothers and sisters-in-law, David and Emma Elizabeth Rice, Tom and Libby Rice and Jim and Laura Rice.

Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Myrtle Chapel Church, with Jerry Pack officiating. Interment will be in Clem Short Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. today at Wilson Funeral Home, 1270 Highway 2565, Louisa.



Helen Marshall (1913-2008)

Mrs. Helen Marshall, 95, of Ironton, Ohio, went to be with the Lord on Friday, March 28, 2008. She was born Jan. 4, 1913, in Pilgrim, Ky. She spent most of her life in the Ironton, Lawrence County area as a housewife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother.

She was faithful to her church, the Hanging Rock Church of the Nazarene, which she had attended for 43 years. She devoted her life to her church and family.

She married Charles “Lefty” Marshall from Pine Grove in 1935. She became a widow at the early age of 50 and had lived independently until the last two years.

After becoming a widow, she learned to drive, purchased two homes and lived independently until she entered the nursing home in 2006. She was a very humble person, never asking anything from anyone, always sacrificing for and thinking of others. Her home was always open to family, friends and always a place to find something good to eat, a glass of iced tea or a place to stay if needed. She loved her Lord, church, family and friends. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother. She will be sadly missed by family and friends. She is at peace and rest with her Lord in Heaven.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Elizabeth Moore Blackburn and Henry Blackburn; four sisters, Mary Blackburn, Virgie Finley, Emma Jean Caraway and Lorabelle Rose; two brothers, Lacy Blackburn and Hayes Blackburn; two children, Shirley Leslie and Richard “Dickie” Marshall; a grandchild, Stanley R. Wells II; two great-grandchildren, Charles William Pennington and Krissi Lynn Bridges.

She is survived by four generations including two daughters and sons-in-law, Betty and Bob Pennington of Hanging Rock and Brenda and Bernie Pertuset of Wheelersburg; a son and daughter-in-law, Don and Glenda Marshall of Deering; a daughter-in-law, Karen Marshall of Ironton; a brother, Arvil Blackburn of Newland, N.C.; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Hanging Rock Church of the Nazarene with the Rev. Clell Elliott officiating. Interment will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery in Pine Grove, Ohio.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Tracy Brammer Funeral Home in Ironton, and one hour prior to the services at the church.



James Wells

James Wells, 67, of Westwood, husband of Evelyn Wells, died Saturday morning at Community Hospice Care Center following an extended illness. Arrangements are pending at Preston Family Funeral Home.



George Lenning

George Lenning, 81, of Ashland died Saturday at his home. His wife, Faye Lenning, survives.

Arrangements are pending at Steen Funeral Home, Central Avenue Chapel.



Sophia Baldwin

Sophia Baldwin, 67, of Oil Springs died Friday at her home.

Her husband, John D. Baldwin, survives.

Funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday at Paintsville Funeral Home. Burial will be in Conley Cemetery in Staffordsville.

Visitation will be after 6 p.m. today and after 9 a.m. Monday at the funeral Home.



William Evans (1924-2008)

William Brown Evans, 83, of West Liberty died Thursday at the Veteran’s Administration Hospital in Huntington, W.Va.

He was born July 30, 1924.

His wife, Georgia Marie Evans, preceded him in death.

Funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday at Herald & Stewart & Halsey chapel in West Liberty. Burial will be in Evans Family Cemetery in West Liberty.

Visitation will be after 5 p.m. today at the funeral home.



Violet Wagoner (1935-2008)

Violet Tolliver Wagoner, 73, of Sandy Hook died Saturday in the Elliott County Nursing and Rehab Center in Sandy Hook.

She was born March 21, 1935, in Elliott County.

Funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday at Newcombe Valley Enterprise Baptist Church in Isonville, with Brothers Gary Sparks and Mike Adkins officiating. Burial will be in Sloas Cemetery in Isonville.

Friends may call after 6 p.m. Sunday and anytime before the service hour on Monday at the church.

Waddell & Whitt Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.



Keith Barnes (1932-2008)

Keith Harold Barnes, 76, of Ironton died Thursday at The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in Pittsburgh, Pa.

He was born Feb. 5, 1932, in Ironton.

His wife, Linda Roberts Barnes, survives.

Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Woodland Cemetery in Ironton.

There will be no visitation.

In lieu of flowers, donation may be made to the Faith and Fitness Center building fund, c/o First Baptist Church, 5th and Vernon Streets, Ironton, Ohio 45638.
