Roy Eugene Gillam (1952-2008)
Roy Eugene Gillam, 55, of Ashland, husband of Kathy Gillam, died Sunday, March 23, 2008 in University of Kentucky Hospital in Lexington, Ky., following an extended illness.
He was born March 31, 1952, in Columbus, Ohio, a son of the late Roy Gillam and Betty Jean Sparkman. He formerly worked for Standard Laboratory as a coal sampler and as a firefighter in Spencer, W.Va. Roy was preceded in death by a son, Roy Eugene Gillam Jr.; grandmother, Lucille Ratliff; stepfather, Roy Sparkman and mother-in-law, Pauline Stewart.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two stepsons, Tony Rankin (Missy) and Jason Rankin (Courtney), both of Catlettsburg; two precious grandchildren, Alexis Paige Rankin and Braxton Gage Rankin; four sisters, Barb Sawyers (Kermit) of Catlettsburg, Connie Sawyers (Leroy) of Ashland, Debbie Mayhem (Ron) of Hager Hill and Kathy Sparkman of Middletown, Ohio; two brothers, Rick Sparkman of Eden, Ohio, and Tommy Sparkman of Lebanon, Ohio; three nieces, Paula Wade of Catlettsburg, Missy Coomer of Florida and Nikki Sparkman of Middletown; five nephews, Matt Hardin of Ashland, Adam Hardin of Worthington, Kyle Sparkman and Ricky Sparkman of Middletown, Ohio, and Todd Ratliff and Bryan Ratliff of Hager Hill.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 26, 2008 at Miller Funeral Home in Ashland by the Rev. Sam Smith and Shannon Slone. Burial will follow in Klaiber Cemetery in Garner, Ky., with military graveside rites by Kenova American Legion Post No. 93.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Tony Rankin, Jason Rankin, Kevin Felty, Anthony Wade, Michael Bailey and Paul Ray.

Paul "Pooh Bear" Williams (1957-2008)
Paul “Pooh Bear” Williams Jr., 50, Ashland, passed away early Monday morning, March 24, 2008, at King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland.
Mr. Williams was born June 4, 1957, a son of Charlene Alley Williams of Ashland, Ky., and Ernest Paul Williams Sr. of Dunlow, W.Va. He was the owner of L & E Electrical Exchange, a member of First Baptist Church of Cannonsburg, and president of Boyd County Hardwood Club. Paul was the co-founder of the Boyd County JFL, past president of Boyd County National Little League and coordinator of the Boyd County Elementary Basketball programs. He volunteered his time, just to see the children smile.
Sadly left behind are his loving wife of 29 wonderful years, Robin McKnight Williams; a son, Michael Brooke Williams of Springfield, Ky.; two daughters, Ashley Shae Chaffin and her husband, David Grant, and Paula Annette Williams and her fiance, Scott Edward Qualls, all of Ashland; sister, Terry Williams Branham and her husband, Bruce of Catlettsburg; sister-in-law, Annette McKnight Macoy and her husband, Mike; two grandchildren whom Papaw Pooh Bear worshiped, Michael Grant Chaffin and Laura Grace Chaffin; niece, Jessica Michelle Branham; and nephews, Casey Ryan Branham, Nichlos Ryan Pusztai.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Michael Keith Williams.
A funeral service in honor of Paul Williams will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 26, 2008 at First Baptist Church of Cannonsburg. Words of comfort will be offered by Pastor Stan Williams and personal eulogy by Brother Buddy Baker. Final rest will follow in Rose Hill Burial Park.
Calling hours for the Williams family will be from 6 ot 9 p.m. today at the church.

Gene Paul Meeks (1933-2008)
Gene Paul Meeks, 74, of Westwood, husband of Idell Stephens Meeks, died Monday morning in King’s Daughters Medical Center following a short illness.
Gene was born Oct. 28, 1933, in Boyd County, Ky., a son of the late Paul J. and Mary E. Johnson Meeks. He was a retired machinist at AK Steel Corp., a U.S. Air Force veteran, a member of the Ashland Elks Lodge BPOE No. 350 and a 12-year volunteer with King’s Daughters Medical Center.
Gene enjoyed the outdoors, golfing and camping and was active in the former Arky Stars Square Dancing Club.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Karen Clay, in 2004.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, are one daughter, Rene R. Allen and husband, Steve of Westwood; two sisters, Mary Sue Patrick and husband, Ralph of Flatwoods and Linda L. Wheeler and husband, Melvin of Bidwell, Ohio; a special brother-in-law, Delbert Clay of Gallipolis, Ohio; a granddaughter, Heather N. Miller of Ashland; and a stepgrandson, Lukas C. Allen of Flatwoods.
Serving as pallbearers include Steve Clay, Kevin Patrick, Joe Patrick, David Miller and Steve Allen.
Honorary pallbearers will be Harry Snyder Jr., Roger Salyers, Raymond Crisp and Warren Burton.
Funeral services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Preston Family Funeral Home in Ashland by the Rev. Tim Daniels. Interment will be in Rose Hill Burial Park with military rites presented by Ironton VFW Post 8850.
Visitation is Wednesday from 6 to 9 p.m. with Elks service at 7 p.m. by the officers and brothers of the Ashland Elks Lodge BPOE No. 350.

Richard “Dick” Moore Sr. (1936-2008)
Richard “Dick” MacQueen Moore, Sr., 71, passed away Saturday evening, March 22, 2008 at his home in Ashland.
Mr. Moore was born Aug. 15, 1936, in Ashland, Ky., a son of the late Jay and Vada MacQueen Moore. Dick was a member of Rose Hill Baptist Church, an Army veteran, retired from the AK Steel maintenance department, a 32nd degree Mason with Rush Lodge, and a member of the El Hasa Shrine of North America.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Jay B. Moore and David Leander Moore, and a sister, Virginia Moore.
Left behind to treasure his love and wonderful memories are his wife of 49 years, Donna Arnett Moore; his son and namesake, Richard MacQueen “Rick” Moore Jr. and his fiancée, Susan “Little Bit” Radwell; his daughter, Susi Akers and her husband, Brian; three grandchildren whom he loved with all his heart, Richard MacQueen “Trey” Moore III and his wife, Lindsey, Kelsea Shea Akers and Kasie Lee Moore.

Ethan Scott Mayse
Ethan Scott Mayse, of South Portsmouth, Ky., died Friday, March 21, 2008 in King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland, Ky., at birth.
He was the son of Scott Mayse and Lisa Hartman of South Portsmouth.
Surviving besides the parents are one brother, Nathan Wayne Hughes of Florence, Ky.; one sister, Kaedyn Marie Mayse of South Portsmouth; and grandparents, Eddie Hartmen and Brenda Hartman of Dry Ridge, Ky.
Graveside funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 26, 2008 at the Duncan and Foster Cemetery in Lynn, Ky., with the Rev. Steve Nelson officiating. Burial will be in Duncan and Foster Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Roberson Funeral Home from 11 a.m. to noon on Wednesday.
Bishop Lewis Ray Porter Jr. (1963-2008)
Bishop Lewis Ray Porter, 44, of Simpsonville, Ky., formerly of Greenup County, Ky., went to be with his Savior and King Jesus Saturday, March 22, 2008 in Centennial Medical Center in Nashville, Tenn.
Mr. Porter was born Sept. 10, 1963, a son of Jacqueline Cordle Porter of Greenup County and the late Lewis Ray Porter Sr.
He is also survived by his loving wife and soul mate of 26 years, Mary Sue Charles Porter.
He was the father of five wonderful children, Bryan Heath (Amanda) Porter of Shepherdsville, Ky., Kent Lewis (Rebecca) Porter of Ashland, Ky., and Amanda Alene (Joseph) Muncy, Lance Sein Porter and Travis Ray Porter, all of Simpsonville.
Lewis held close to his heart four beautiful grandchildren who called him papa, Kontessa Jade Muncy, Malachi Tristen Muncy, Mary Johannah Muncy and Brooklynn Reese Porter. Also surviving are two brothers, Kenneth (Kelly) Porter of Danleyton, Ky., and Robert (Robin) Porter of Ironton, Ohio; and two sisters, Naomi (Dale) Robirds of Wheelersburg, Ohio, and Susan (Jack Park) Porter of Wurtland, Ky.
Lewis was called and chosen by God as an ordained Bishop in the Church of God. He served as pastor at New Life Worship Center in Shepherdsville and Mountain Cathedral in Inez, Ky. He started Talbton Mission Outreach in Talbton, Ga., served as assistant pastor at Garden City Church in Savannah, Ga. and evangelism director at Wurtland Church of God. He served on Church of God Missions Board for the state of Kentucky and served as lay minister at the Hillcrest Church of God in Columbus, Ga. He was a devoted servant to his church and church family.
Lewis not only served God but also served his country as a staff sgt. in the United States Army. While serving in the Infantry he was decorated with many Army Achievement Medals and Awards. Lewis earned the highest respect from his troops and fellow comrades while serving his country for 13 years then accepted his calling in the Lord’s Army.
Lewis held many positions in his life. He was a Kentucky colonel. He served as court counsel for the state of Georgia, held a BA in Christian Education, served many years as a Christian counselor and served on the board of the Ministerial Association of Inez.
Lewis was an excellent example of a pastor, counselor, teacher, husband, father, son, friend, grandfather, brother and brother-in-law.
He was a babysitter, cook, mechanic, plumber, painter, carpenter, musician, artist, cake decorator, dishwasher, chaperone, house keeper, fisherman, architect and listener.
There was no task too large or too small, Lewis could do them all.
He will be greatly and sadly missed by his family and all who called him pastor and friend.
Lewis’s day of celebration will be Wednesday, March 26, 2008 at the Wurtland Church of God at 2 p.m. by Bishop Henry Montgomery.
Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until service time Wednesday at the church.

Barbara Ann Thompson Daniels (1952-2008)
Barbara A. Daniels went to be with the Lord on Monday, March 24, 2008 following an extended illness. She was born in Ashland, Ky., the daughter of the late John R. Thompson.
She is survived by her husband of 39 years, Curtis E. Daniels of Flatwoods, Ky.; mother, Peggy Conley Thompson Perkins of Flatwoods; one sister, Peggy S. Hensley (Jeff) of Flatwoods; three brothers, Steve (Brenda) Thompson of Argillite, Ky., Mike (Marlyn) of Flatwoods and Timmy (Sherry G.) Thompson of Flatwoods; two daughters, Sherry L. Mills (Jimmy) of Ashland, Ky., and Angie Greer (Kenny) of Flatwoods; son, Curtis E. Daniels “Bubby” (Missie) of Stanley, Va.; eight grandchildren, Justin E. Daniels, Brandi L. Mills, Brittany L. Mills, Lindsey K. Daniels, Rachael Daniels, Austin Greer, Brooke Mills and Amber Daniels.
Barbara was a member of First Church of the Nazarene of Flatwoods and past Sunday School teacher. She was also retired from Russell School System.
She had many nieces and nephews who loved her and will miss her.
The service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Carman Funeral Home in Flatwoods with Pastor Roger Bonzo officiating. Burial will be in Bellefonte Memorial Gardens.
Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Numa Maxine Webb (1925-2008)
Numa Maxine Webb, age 82, of Flatwoods, Ky., died March 23, 2008 in Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital.
Mrs. Webb was born Dec. 3, 1925, in Greenup County, Ky., a daughter of the late Walter and Neva Salyers Conley.
In addition, she was preceded in death by her husband, Talton B. Webb; a brother, Walter Conley Jr.; and two sisters, Vena Hayes and Leta Elam.
She was a retired cashier with J.C. Penney and a member of Advance Memorial United Methodist Church in Flatwoods.
Surviving are a daughter, Brenda Gayle Wells of Flatwoods; a sister, Helen May of Lancaster, California; grandson, David (Annie) Moren of Kansas City, Mo.; granddaughter, Sheri (Gus) Guzman of San Antonio, Texas; four great-grandchildren; a niece and nephew who were a great help, Rita (Gene) Jensen and John Webb; and a host of other loving nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Bellefonte Memorial Gardens in Flatwoods by Pastor Phil Hogg and the Rev. Don Young.
Friends may call from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday at Carman Funeral Home in Flatwoods.

Harlin Smith (1973-2008)
Harlin Smith, 34, of Lorain, passed away Friday, March 21, 2008 at his home.
Harlin was born in Elyria on July 4, 1973. He was a carpenter and a steelworker. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his sons and watching Ohio State football games with everyone.
He is survived by two sons, Justin and Josh Smith; his mother, Bernice Smith; and a brother, Clint Smith.
He is preceded in death by his father, Johnie C. Smith; and five brothers, Randy, Joie, Terry, Steve and Dale Smith.
The family will receive friends at Reidy-Scanlan-Giovannazzo Funeral Home, 2150 Broadway, Loarin today, March 25, 2008, from 4 to 6 p.m.
Funeral services will be tonight at 6 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be in Ison Family Cemetery in Rocky Branch, Ky.
Graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Rocky Branch.

Elmer Stevens of Deland, Fla., formerly of Westwood, died Sunday.

Orville Callihan
Orville Callihan, 85, of Quincy, died Sunday in South Shore Nursing and Rehab Center.
He was born in Greenup County.
His wife, Margaret Smith Callihan, survives.
The funeral will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Roberson Funeral Home in South Shore. Burial will be in Firebrick Cemetery with military rites by James L. Flannery American Legion Post 276 of South Shore.

Roy Fultz (1924-2008)
Roy Robert Fultz, 84, of Morehead, died Sunday at his residence.
He was born March 4, 1924, in Rowan County.
His wife, Mildred Katherine Conley Fultz, preceded her in death.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Lane-Stucky-Gray Funeral Home in Morehead. Burial will be in Fultz Cemetery in Carter County.
