Charles Cremeans Jr. - 1926-2008
Charles Cremeans Jr., 81, of Westwood, husband of Sylvia Hayes Cremeans, died Friday morning in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland following an extended illness.
He was born Aug.18, 1926, in Boyd County, a son of the late Charles Joshua and Rosie Fisher Cremeans. He was retired from GATX as an air brake repairman and was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran.
Charles was preceded in death by 11 brothers and sisters and a great-grandchild.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a son, John Cremeans of Westwood; two daughters, Nancy Elkins of Westwood and Connie Fletcher of Vienna, Ohio; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday by Pastor Dean Jackson at Preston Family Funeral Home. Burial will be in Hayes Family Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Joyce Nies - 1944-2008
Joyce A. Nies, 63, of Ashland, died Friday, March 21, 2008, in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland.
She was born July 31, 1944, in Ashland, the daughter of the late Merle C. and Ruth A. Worley Williams. She was the widow of James W. Nies. She was employed as a clerk for 16 years by GTE/Verizon. She attended Unity Baptist Church in Ashland and was a member of the Junction City Fire Jills in Junction City, Calif.
She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Cindy J. Forte; and a nephew, Paul L. Davis.
Survivors include a son, Quinn Litzenberger of Ashland; a sister and brother-in-law, Janet and Steve Fraley of Edenton, N.C.; a niece and her husband, Lisa and Jim Grounds of Ironton; a nephew and his wife, Tony and Sara Brown of Georgetown; a great-niece, Haley Brown of Georgetown; a stepson and his wife, Steve and Sylvia Nies of Long Beach, Calif.; a grandson, Chris Nies of Long Beach; and a close family friend, Mary Zwayer of Lancaster, Ohio.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Lazear Funeral Home in Ashland by Pastor Ed Caudill.

Jerry Wessel
Jerry Wray Wessel, 63, of Fort Myers, Fla., formerly of Ashland, Ky., died March 20, 2008.
He was married to Cheryl Wessel for 31 years and she survives. He was retired from the Fort Myers News Press for 30 years, retiring in November 2007. He was employed at the Ashland Daily Independent for many years before moving to Fort Myers. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a son and daughter-in-law, Stephen and Judith Wessel of Flatwoods, two daughters and a son-in-law, Janel and Robert Perri and Renae Wessel; three brothers, Bill Wessel, Keith Wessel and Tom Wessel; a sister-in-law, Beryl Wilson; five grandchildren; and so many dear friends.
Memorial services will be at 3 p.m. today at Lee Memorial Park Funeral Home, 12777 State Road 82, Fort Myers, FL 33913.
Eunice Duley - 1920-2008
Eunice M. Duley, 87, of Ashland, died Saturday, March 22, 2008, in Woodland Oaks Health Care Facility in Ashland.
She was born Dec. 11, 1920, in West Virginia, the daughter of the late Thomas and Anna Riffe Anders. She was the first manager of the original Giovanni’s Pizza on U.S. 60 and former manager at the Blackburn Avenue Giovanni’s Pizza, retiring in 1995. She was a charter member of Wildwood Baptist Church.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Frank P. Duley; six sisters, Jaye Anders, Lucille McPeek, Frances Kouns, Doris Waggoner, Pauline Griffith and Virginia Hutton; and two brothers, Robert Anders and Rick Anders.
Survivors include four sons and three daughters-in-law, Tim and Dee Duley, Fred and Vicki Duley and Frank Duley, all of Ashland, and Gerald and Kathy Duley of Washington; a daughter and son-in-law, Lynn and Herbert Harris of Ashville, Ohio; two sisters, Marcella Rye of Ashland and Joyce Flannery of Sandy Hook; a brother, Tom Anders of Ashland; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Miller Funeral Home in Ashland by Pastor Jim Nichols. Burial will be in Ashland Cemetery.
Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Wildwood Baptist Church Building Fund, 3414 Charles St., Ashland, KY 41101.

Helen Goff - 1915-2008
Helen Elizabeth Clark Goff, 92, of Ashland, died Saturday in Trinity Station in Flatwoods.
She was born July 13, 1915, in Ashland, the daughter of the late DeWitt Talmadge and Anna Smith Clark. She was the widow of Foster F. Goff, who died in 1993.
She was a 1933 graduate of Ashland Senior High School and served as a court clerk to the late Judge A.R. Imes. She was secretary of Goff Electronics Inc. and was employed by the former Ashland Home Telephone Co. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Ashland and a former member of the Goldenaires.
She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Carter Courtney Clark and Harry Marvin Clark; and two sisters, Ann Clark Hensley and Alberta Frances Clark.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Carol Goff Tanner (Robert) of Charlottesville, Va., and Susan Goff Lyons (Scott) of Lexington; six grandchildren, Jane B. Tanner, William W. Tanner, Ann Tanner Keifer, Benjamin C. Ward, Elizabeth F. Ward and Leigh T. Ward; and four great-grandchildren, Grace Tanner, James Tanner, Lydia Keifer and Alex Keifer.
A graveside service will be at noon Monday at Rose Hill Burial Park Mausoleum Chapel by the Rev. Gene Pillow. Entombment will be in the mausoleum.
Visitation will be after 11 a.m. Monday at the burial park chapel.

Thomas Crutcher - 1923-2008
Thomas D. Crutcher, 84, formerly of Ashland, passed away early Saturday morning in Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville.
He was born Dec. 21, 1923, in Lawrence County, to the late John Brekenridge and Rose Castle Crutcher. He was the husband of Barbara Murray Crutcher. He served in the U.S. Army, 102nd infantry, 407th Canon Company during World War II and earned a Purple Heart. He owned and operated Crutcher Grocery in Louisa. He was a member of Rush Masonic Lodge 715, F&AM, and South Ashland United Methodist Church.
He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Paul Crutcher, Mack Crutcher and Jack Crutcher; three sisters, Rosemary Newsom, Louise Clegg and Emily Tilson; and a nephew, Mack Crutcher.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a son and daughter-in-law, Thomas D. and Wilma Crutcher II of Richmond; three granddaughters, Heather, Rebecca and Amber Crutcher, all of Richmond; a brother-in-law, Dean Murray of Prestonsburg; a niece and three nephews, John Newsom of Poca, W.Va., John Alley of Milwaukee, Wis., and Sheri Murray Music and Greg Murray, both of Paintsville.
The funeral will be at noon Wednesday at Young Funeral Home in Louisa by the Rev. John Savage and the Rev. Jeff Allen. Burial will be in Highland Memorial Park in Staffordsville.
Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Monday at Oldham, Roberts & Powell Funeral Home in Richmond and from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home in Louisa, where there will be a Masonic service at 7 p.m.

Virginia Lee McBrayer, 79, of Greenup, went to be with the Lord on Friday, March 21, 2008, in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland.
She was born Oct. 19, 1928, in Pike County, a daughter of the late Ernest and Virgie Maynard Runyon. She was a member of South Fork Old Regular Baptist Church in Worthington.
She was also preceded in death by three sisters, Gladys McDaniel, Luna Dillow and Viola Gilliam.
Survivors include her husband, Billy McBrayer of Greenup; a son, Billy Eugene McBrayer and his wife, Teresa, of Greenup County; five daughters, Kathy Snoddy and her husband, Bill, of Wurtland, Carol Hockley and her husband, Frank, of Argillite, Linda Hieneman and her husband, Doug, of Greenup, Regina Bradley and her husband, Fred, of Load and Diane Martin and her husband, Jerry, of Greenup; two sisters, Louise Sizemore and Kathleen Tackett, both of Greenup; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two very special family members, Bessie McBrayer and Sherry Archey.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at South Fork Old Regular Baptist Church by Elders Willis Tolliver and Gary Blevins. Burial will be in McBrayer Cemetery on Alcorn Road in Greenup County.

Melvin Raymond “Buddy” Harlow, 64, of Grayson, husband of Betty Belle Campbell Harlow, passed away Friday, March 21, 2008, in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland.
He was born March 10, 1944, in Samaria, the son of the late Melvin and Inez Elam Harlow. He was a farmer and was employed for some time by American Shipyard in Lorain, Ohio. He was a member of Salem Missionary Baptist Church.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include four daughters, Peggy (Curtis) Justice of Ashland, Sandy (Mark) Maynard of Rush and Teresa (Gary) Conley and Tammy (Chester) Bailey, both of Grayson; a sister, Florence King; six grandchildren, Andrew and Brittany Justice, Jacob and Eric Conley, Emily Maynard and Gabriel Bailey; two stepgrandchildren, Alisha and Ryan Bailey; and several nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Matthew, Hobart and John Paul Harlow; and three sisters, Geneva Hockley, Fern Adkins and Ruth Hartman.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Sparks Funeral Home in Grayson by Charles Lybrooks and Jerry Foster, ministers. Burial will be in Montgomery Family Cemetery on Big Lost Creek in Greenup County.

Phillip Newland - 1957-2008
Phillip Ray “Buddy” “Shorty” Newland, 50, of Crane Creek Road, Grayson, husband of Jackie Lou Bradford Newland, went to be with the Lord on Friday, March 21, 2008, in St. Mary’s Medical Center in Huntington, W.Va.
He was born June 17, 1957, in Grayson, a son of John Clarence Newland and the late Opal Faye Campbell Newland.
He was also preceded in death by his mother-in-law, Geraldine Bradford.
Phillip attended Rockdale Freewill Baptist Church. He was employed by the Asplundh Tree Co. for 30 years and was currently employed as a conductor trainee by CSX Railroad. He graduated from East Carter High School and the REDI Conductor Training School in Atlanta.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a son, Jeremy Newland of Lansing, Mich.; a daughter, Misty (Chris) Branham of Grayson; a grandson, Hunter Chase Branham; his father-in-law, Kenneth Bradford of Grayson; a brother, John (Carolyn) Newland of Webbville; three sisters, Linda (Bob) Leadingham and Jeannie (George) Martin, both of Grayson, and Brenda (Nick) Bradford of Vermontville, Mich., two sisters-in-law, Kenni (Randall) Redmond and Tonia (Mark) Hutchinson, both of Argillite; many family and friends; and a very special friend, Shadow.
