Ruth Perry - 1929-2008
Ruth D. Wells Perry, 78, of Westwood, passed away Wednesday, March 19, 2008, in Community Hospice Care Center following a brief illness.
Ruth was born May 1, 1929, in Eunice, W.Va., and was the last surviving child of 10 born to the late Peter and Margaret Taylor Lares.
Ruth previously worked for Grants Department Store, Hills Department Store, the Cinderella Dress Factory and the telephone company in Frankfort, Ky. She was a former member of Order of Eastern Star and a member of Fairview Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three husbands, Otis William Rhodes, Edward “Jerry” Wells and Charles “Buck” Perry; four brothers; and five sisters.
She is survived by four sons, William “Bill” Rhodes and his wife, Shelia, of Westwood, Robert “Bob” Rhodes and his wife, Jean, of Ironville, Scott Wells of Ashland and Dan Wells and his wife, Diane, of Westwood; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be by the Rev. Mike Rice at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 22, 2008, at Caniff Funeral Home in Westwood. Entombment will be in Rose Hill Burial Park Mausoleum in Ashland.
Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. today and an hour before services Saturday at the funeral home.
James R. May - 1922-2008
James Robert “Jim Bob” May, 86, of Lexington, formerly of Greenup, died Wednesday, March 19, 2008, in Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington.
Mr. May was born Jan. 26, 1922, in Ashland, Ky., a son of the late William and Lucy May.
Mr. May was preceded in death by two wonderful wives of more than 30 years each, Ruth Griffith May in 1974 and Marion Wells May in 2006.
Mr. May was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Pacific with the U.S. Navy. After the war, he returned to his hometown of Greenup and worked for and later acquired Central Station. In the 1960s, Mr. May acquired Griffith Auto Sales, renaming it May Auto Sales.
Mr. May was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church of Greenup, serving many years as a deacon and leading the worship service music. He also served in several positions with the Gideons.
Jim Bob is survived by his son, James W. “Jimmy” May and wife Debby of Lexington; five grandchildren, Lucy May (Jimmy) Nall, Betsy May and Shawn (Beth), Todd and Paige Hunter; and three great-granddaughters.
Visitation will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 22, 2008, at First Baptist Church of Greenup, with a service by Dr. Tom Melvin at 11 a.m.
Burial will be in Plum Grove Cemetery.

Vernon V. Craycraft - 1933-2008
Vernon V. Craycraft, 75, of East Tygart Road, Greenup, Ky., went to be with his Lord on Wednesday, March 19, 2008, in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland, Ky.
He was born in Greenup County, Ky., on March 17, 1933, a son of the late George Craycraft and Rachael Horsley Craycraft.
He was an Army veteran, retired from Empire-Detroit Steel Mill and a member of South Shore Church of Christ and Carpenters Local 437 in Portsmouth, Ohio.
Also preceding him in death were three sisters, Hazel Adkins, Darlene Fetters and Norsie McCarty.
Surviving are his wife, Claudine Mann Craycraft, who he married on June 21, 1952; a daughter and her husband, Amy Craycraft Varacalli and Chris Varacalli of South Shore, Ky.; a granddaughter, Ashley Varacalli of South Shore; and four sisters, Barbara Morman, Inez Lewis, Wilma Fyffe and Josephine Newsome, all of South Shore.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 23, 2008, at Roberson Funeral Home in South Shore by Gary Vaughn. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday and after 11 a.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Dixie F. Brown - 1921-2008
Dixie F. Brown, 87, of Louisa, Ky., passed away Wednesday, March 19, 2008 in Louisa.
The Martin County, Ky., native was born Jan. 28, 1921, the daughter of the late Grover C. Fannin and Sarah Jane “Babe” Brewer Fannin.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Adrian Brown, who passed away in 1988.
Mrs. Brown was of the Protestant faith. She was a homemaker and lived most of her life in Milo, Ky., except for more than 20 years of traveling with her husband, an NCO in the U.S. Army.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Ivy Holstein; and brothers Carson Fannin and Grady Fannin.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Ralph Henry of Flatwoods, Ky.; a sister, Oma Maynard of Martin County; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, March 22, 2008, in Bellefonte Memorial Gardens by the Rev. James Cremeans.
Friends may call from 2 to 3 p.m. Saturday at Phillips Funeral Home, 1004 S. Seventh St., Ironton, Ohio.

Zenobia “Nobie” Criss - 1929-2008
Zenobia “Nobie” Gibbs Criss, 78, of Lexington, died Wednesday in Hospice of the Bluegrass in Lexington.
Mrs. Criss was born Aug. 22, 1929, in Catlettsburg.
Her husband, Ray Criss, survives.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Kilgore & Collier Funeral Home in Catlettsburg.

William Knauff - 1929-2008
William O. Knauff of West Portsmouth, Ohio, died Wednesday in Southern Ohio Medical Center in Portsmouth, Ohio.
He was born June 8, 1929, in West Portsmouth.
His wife, Ruth Trimble Knauff, survives.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Roberson Funeral Home in South Shore.
Burial will be in Siloam Cemetery in South Shore.

Gladys Cecil Nickell, 97, of West Liberty, died Wednesday in Morgan County Appalachian Regional Hospital in West Liberty.
She was born Oct. 3, 1910.
Her husband, Everette L. Nickell, preceded her in death.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Herald & Stewart & Halsey Funeral Home in West Liberty. Burial will be in Hazel Green Cemetery.

Christine Gillispie - 1924-2008
Christine Gillispie, 83, of West Liberty, died Thursday in Morgan County Appalachian Regional Hospital in West Liberty.
She was born Aug. 1, 1924.
Her husband, Dorsey Gillispie, preceded her in death.

Mary Ann Fitch, 59, of Richardson, died Wednesday in St. Mary’s Medical Center.
She was born July 23, 1948, in Louisa.
Her husband, Paul Fitch, died in 2007.
The funeral will be at noon Saturday at Smith Chapel Church. Burial will be in Fitch Cemetery at Richardson.

His wife, Rose Ann Denton Carter, survives.
