Tommy E. Elswick - 1940-2008
Tommy E. Elswick, 67, of Ashland, Ky., died Tuesday, March 18, 2008, in King’s Daughters Medical Center.
Mr. Elswick was born Aug. 8, 1940, in Ashland, a son of the late Thomas Elswick and Sarah Alice Corey Elswick.
He was also preceded in death by a son, Tommy E. Elswick Jr.; four sisters; and a brother.
He was a retired foreman of the water district for the city of Ashland and a member of Pollard Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Betty Griffith Elswick of Ashland; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Jeff (Betty Alice) Elswick of Ashland and Mark Elswick of Grayson, Ky.; a daughter and son-in-law, Lisa (Steve) Adkins of Ashland; a daughter-in-law, Garnet Elswick of Cannonsburg, Ky.; six grandchildren, Jeffrey Elswick, Josh Elswick, Justin Elswick, Stephen Adkins, Michael Adkins and Samuel Elswick; a great-grandchild, Riley Elswick; a brother, Jack Elswick of Mansfield, Ohio; and a sister, Violet Mullins of Ashland.
A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, March 21, 2008, at Kirby Flats Cemetery by the Rev. Todd Richardson and the Rev. Tom Swartzwelder.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today, March 20, 2008, at Lazear Funeral Home in Ashland.
Joanne Fannin - 1950-2008
Joanne Smallridge Fannin of Gainesville, Fla., formerly of Bear Creek Road, Catlettsburg, passed away Monday March 17, 2008, in North Florida Regional Medical Center after a long illness.
Mrs. Fannin was 57 years of age, born April 7, 1950, in Catlettsburg, Ky., to the late Wayne and Anna White Smallridge. She was retired from J.C. Penney in Ashland after many years as a clerk and was of the Baptist faith.
Sadly left behind are her adoring husband of 39 years, Thomas Fannin of Gainesville; a daughter, Ladonna Trautz and her husband, Steven, of Alachua, Fla.; a brother, William Smallridge and his wife, Joyce, of Catlettsburg; a sister, Carolyn Blanton and her husband, Alvin, of Catlettsburg; the special love of her life, her grandson, Ryan Trautz; and many nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews and great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.
Joanne was also preceded in death by a brother, Garett Ray Smallridge, and sister-in-law, Patricia Smallridge.
A funeral service in memory of Joanne Smallridge Fannin will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 22, 2008, at Kilgore & Collier Funeral Home on Panola Street in Catlettsburg. Words of comfort will be offered by Pastor Everett Stevens. Final rest will be in White Cemetery in Catlettsburg.

Evelyn Adkins - 1926-2008
Evelyn Marie Lawhon Adkins passed from this world surrounded by her loving family on March 18, 2008, in St. Mary’s Medical Center in Huntington, W.Va., after a short illness.
She was born Nov. 28, 1926, in Huntington, the daughter of the late Walter and Susan Lawhon.
In addition, she was preceded in death by her brother, Leon Lawhon; a sister, Hazel Lyon; and a great-grandson, Daniel Ray Skaggs.
She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Raymond Adkins of Wurtland, Ky.; two sisters, Betty Knight of Cottageville, W.Va., and Anna Wood of Huntington; two sons, Michael (Vera Rae) Adkins of Great Falls, Mont., and Dan (Marian) Adkins of Grayson, Ky.; a daughter, Mitzie Adkins of Wolverine Lake, Mich.; a granddaughter, Christina (James) Skaggs and two great-grandchildren, Jaydan and Raven Skaggs, all of Grayson. She had many nieces and nephews who loved their Aunt Sis. She also had a special friend, Carol Terry of Lloyd, Ky. She will also be missed by her dog, Casper.
Evelyn was an artist and belonged to the Ironton Artist Association and was on the board of directors of the Tri-State Artist Association. She was very active in the Democratic Woman’s Club and was a poll worker.
The family wishes to give special thanks to the fifth floor Neuro Science Department of St. Mary’s Medical Center for the wonderful compassion and care.
Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, March 21, 2008, at Bellefonte Memorial Gardens in Flatwoods, Ky., by Brother Brian Hayton.
Visitation for friends and relatives will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today, March 20, 2008, at Wright’s Funeral Home in Greenup, Ky.

Louise Lock Conley - 1918-2008
Louise Lock Conley, 89, of Grayson, Ky., went to be with her Lord on Tuesday, March 18, 2008, in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland, Ky.
She was born April 8, 1918, in Carter County, Ky., a daughter of the late Chidy and Sally Barnhill Lock.
She was a homemaker and a member of Stinson Community Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Sisrow Conley, in 2000 and two sons, Walter Conley in 2003 and George Conley in 1999.
Her survivors include a son, Danny (Mary) Conley of Grayson; two additional daughters-in-law; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, March 21, 2008, at East Carter County Memory Gardens by Lawrence Felty, minister. Burial will be in East Carter County Memory Gardens.
Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today, March 20, at Malone Funeral Home in Grayson.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Community Hospice Care Center, 2330 Pollard Road, Ashland, KY 41102.

Bertha Stanley Lowe Dixon
Bertha Dixon, 97, of Ironton, Ohio, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, March 18, 2008, following an extended illness.
She was born in Greenup County, Ky., the daughter of the late Jasper and Minerva Ella Brown-Stanley.
Bertha was a faithful member of Sedgewick United Methodist Church of Ironton. She worked as a foster grandparent at the Open Door School for 23 years and was a retired sales clerk at Artwil’s Dress Shop. She also volunteered as a Girl Scout troop leader and with the American Red Cross for many years.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara (William) Hollingsworth; two infant sons; four sisters, Cassie Price, Ethel Phelps, Audrey Sturgill and Elizabeth “Bess” Edwards; three brothers, Russell, Fred and Willie Stanley; and a great-grandson, Billy Hatfield.
She is survived by four generations: three daughters, Hazel Dolores Sarven Legg of South Point, Ohio, Josephine “Jo” Brammer and Margaret Molter, both of Ironton; nine grandchildren, Jim (Jenny) Legg of Lexington, Ky., Cheri (Joe) McKay of Barboursville, W.Va., Virgil (Lisa) Hollingsworth of Wrightsville, Ga., Betty (Dave) Hollingsworth of Columbus, Ohio, Kenneth Hollingsworth of London, Ohio, Carol (Dave) Pennington of Hanging Rock, Ohio, Don (Jan) Fraley of Russell, Ky., Steve (Patti) Molter of Palmyra, Va., and Beth (Mark) Snyder of Huntington, W.Va.; 14 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; and countless foster grandchildren from the Open Door School.
Visitation will be from noon to 2 p.m. Friday, March 21, 2008, at Sedgewick United Methodist Church, with a memorial service to follow by the Rev. Willard Metz.
Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Interment will be in Dixon Cemetery in Westwood, Ky.
Caniff Funeral Home in Westwood is in charge of arrangements.

David L. Horne, 46, of Ashland, died Tuesday in King’s Daughters Medical Center.
He was born March 31, 1961, in Ashland.
His wife, Jacqueline “Jackie” Trimble Horne, survives.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Lazear Funeral Home in Ashland. Burial will be in Ferguson Cemetery in Morgan County.
