Clyde Meadows (1917-2008)

Clyde Price Meadows, 90, of Russell, died Saturday in Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital in Russell.

He was born Sept. 15, 1917, in Russell, the son of the late Clyde P. Meadows Sr. and Mattie J. Vanderhoof Love.

He was the husband of Virginia D. Beard Meadows, who survives. He was a World War II U.S. Army Infantry veteran and chief of the Russell Volunteer Fire Department. He was the oldest living fire chief in the state of Kentucky. He was a member of Smith Masonic Lodge 775 for almost 60 years, El Hasa Shrine and American Legion Howard Thomas Post 43 in Raceland.

He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Virginia Meadows; a half brother, Jack D. Love; two sisters, Edith Maxine Johnson and Ester Louise Meadows; and a half sister, Betty Jane Love.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a son and daughter-in-law, Clyde Weslee and Virginia “Ginny” Meadows of Russell; two daughters and sons-in-law, Linda K. and Mickey Fosson of Ashland and Ester “Sissy” Ann and Ed Shaffer of Russell; a half brother, William Earnest Love of Oak Hill, Ohio; five grandchildren and their spouses, Dr. Michelle Fosson, Delawna and Justin Kearns, Jenny and Scott Bates, Joe Shaffer and Adare and Greg Whitt; and 10 great-grandhchildren, Grant and Gracie Bates, Sara and Emma Whitt, Amy Kearns and Josh, James, Stephen, Carla and Yasmarie Gibbs.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Carman Funeral Home in Russell by Pastor Raymond Payne and ministers Roger Bonzo and Jack Edwards. Burial will be in Bellefonte Memorial Gardens in Flatwoods. Smith Masonic Lodge 775 will conduct services at noon Monday at the funeral home.

Visitation will be after 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mead Memorial United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 1, Russell, KY 41169.



Florine Hern Grizzle (1924-2008)

Florine Hern Grizzle of East Main Street, Greenup, died Saturday, March 15, 2008, in King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland.

She was born in Carter County on April 26, 1924, to the late William T. Hern and the late Sylvia Rogers Hern Harlan. She was also preceded in death by the love of her life, Charles Clifford Grizzle.

She is survived by her son, Charles Grizzle of Washington, D.C.; daughters Joan Grizzle Tharp (Edward) of Argillite and Patricia Grizzle Flanery of Fishers, Ind.; grandson Randy Caudill (Pam), Tony Tharp (Sherry) and Michael Flanery (Angela); granddaughter Robin Bush (Chris); seven great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Greenup First United Methodist Church. Mrs. Grizzle will be laid to rest in Grizzle Family Cemetery in Argillite.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday at Carman Funeral Home in Flatwoods.

Memorial contributions may be made to Greenup First United Methodist Church.



Steven Hall (1977-2008)

Steven Dean Hall, 30, of Worthington, left his family’s loving arms after a brief illness on Thursday, March 13, 2008, in Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital in Russell.

He was born Aug. 24, 1977, in Ironton, the son of Tex Dean and Glenda Boyles Hall of Worthington.

Steven was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Glenn L. Boyles and Nelson Jarrells; and his great-grandparents, Laudie and Marie Bates and Albert and Elizabeth Boyles.

He is also survived by his son, Anthony, and Anthony’s mother and stepfather, Deanna and Eric Lambert of Ashland; his grandmothers, Imogene Boyles of Worthington and Clisty Jarrells of Vanceburg; his aunt and uncle, Kathy and Ralph “Spike” McCracken and their children, Tyler and Kaera, all of Lexington; and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Steven remains in our hearts and thoughts and will never be forgotten and will be forever loved.

Graveside services will be at 11:30 a.m. Monday at Bellefonte Memorial Gardens in Flatwoods by Pastor Leonard McGlone and Brother Roger McCaleb.

There will be no visitation.

Evans Funeral Home in Raceland is in charge of arrangements.



Jeffrey Long

Jeffrey Clinton Long, 45, of Garrison, died Feb. 23, 2008, at his residence following a fire.

He was born in Portsmouth, Ohio, a son of Thomas Alvin Long of Carrollton and the late Darwina Parsons Long.

He was a construction worker.

Survivors, in addition to his father, include his stepmother, Jeanie Long of Carrollton; two brothers, Oscar Long and David Long, both of Olive Hill; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Pamela and Darren Bryant of Grayson, Lois and Jack Curry of Tennessee and Reginia and Troy Reitz of Florida; several stepbrothers and stepsisters; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Roberson Funeral Home in South Shore by the Rev. Glenn Newsome. Burial will be in Siloam Cemetery in South Shore.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday and after 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.



Clarence Lucas (1931-2008)

Clarence Eugene “Bug” Lucas, 77, left this Earth on March 14, 2008, to be with the Lord.

He was retired from CSX Railroad and was a deacon and assistant Sunday school superintendent at Rush Free Will Baptist Church.

He was born Feb. 1, 1931, a son of the late Frank and Mary (Burton) Lucas. He is survived by his wife of 57 wonderful years, Hazel Davis Lucas.

He was also preceded in death by two brothers, William “Obe” and Johnny Lucas; and two sisters, Louise “Dolly” Campbell and Brenda Lucas.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Charlie and Lucretia Lucas of Whitesville, W.Va.; two daughters and a son-in-law, Susie and Eddie Conley and Sarah Jo Savage, all of Rush; four brothers and sisters-in-law, Jack and Linda Lucas, Tommy Joe and Pat Lucas, Clell and Bonnie Lucas and Clay and Minnie Lucas, all of Rush; five sisters and three brothers-in-law, Ona Mae Bailey of Winchester, Wilma and Dodie Click of Morehead, Lois Ann Davis, Rose Mary and Elmer Thornberry and Puger and Denny Fryer, all of Rush; four grandchildren and their spouses, Christie and Shannon Wells and Susan Ferguson, all of Rush, Jamie and Donna Conley of Rockvale, Tenn., and Brandon and Amanda Bowling of Whitesville; eight great-grandchildren, Seth, Alyssa and Zach Wells and Wyatt Ferguson, all of Rush, Lisa and Kyle Sanders and Brooke Conley, all of Rockvale, and Caileigh Bowling of Whitesville; and devoted church family and friends.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Kilgore United Methodist Church by ministers Scott Lambert and Fred Wiles. Burial will be in East Carter County Memory Gardens.

Visitation will be after 4 p.m. today and until services Monday at the church.

Malone Funeral Home in Grayson is in charge of arrangements.

Claris Everman (1927-2008)

Claris Mae Willis Everman departed to glory on March 16, 2008, at Carter Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Grayson after an extended illness.

She was born Sept. 29, 1927, in Iron Hill (Charlotte Furnace), the daughter of the late Lewis and Leola Starks Willis. She was the widow of Carl G. Everman, to whom she was married for 61 years.

She was a member of Grace Bible Church and enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening and cooking.

She was also preceded in death by her only brother, Lloyd Willis.

Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Marilyn and David Kouns, Carolyn and George Boggs and Sharon and James Chaffins, all of Grayson; and four sons and three daughters-in-law, Carlos Wade and his special friend, Sharon Kay Hieneman, of Grayson, Derl and Hallie Everman of Boyd County, Curtis and Susan Everman of Grayson and Gaylan and Juanita of Newport News, Va.

She was also blessed with 21 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, a great-great-grandchild and a host of friends and relatives.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Malone Funeral Home in Grayson by minister George Boggs. Burial will be in Huffman Family Cemetery.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. today and after 9 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Charles Lute (1923-2008)

Charles E. Lute, 84, of Lexington, formerly of South Point, passed from this life on Sunday, March 9, 2008, in Mayfair Manor Nursing Home in Lexington.

He was born June 19, 1923, in Williamson, W.Va., a son of the late Hal and Brookie Butcher Lute. He was the husband of the late Goldie Toney Lute.

The World War II Navy veteran was a retired safety inspector for Ashland Oil Inc. and a member of Apostolic Life Cathedral.

He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Nelson Lute, Russell Lute, and Jimmy Lute.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Sheila and John Corn of Lexington; a grandson, Jason Corn of Lexington; and special nieces and nephews Bill Butcher and his wife, Judy, Linda Lester and her husband, Dave, and Ruth Mays.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Schneider-Griffin Funeral Home in Chesapeake by the Rev. Edwin Harper. Burial will be in Highland Memorial Gardens in South Point.

Friends may call after 10 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to Hospice of the Bluegrass, Development Office, 2312 Alexandria Drive, Lexington, KY 40504.

Mary Sue Ross Comstock, 84, of Rush, died Saturday in King's Daughters Medical Center. Funeral arrangements are pending at Neal Funeral Home in Catlettsburg.

Rosemary Pence Rhodus, 67, of Camden, S.C., died Thursday in Kershaw County Medical Center in Camden. Funeral arrangements are pending at Roberson Funeral Home in South Shore.



Jean Webb (1928-2008)

Jean Elizabeth Tordiff Webb, 79, of South Point, died Friday at the home of her son, Robert, in Lesage, W.Va.

She was born March 24, 1928, in Ironton.

Her husband, Marcus Webb Jr., preceded her in death.

Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Monday at Woodland Cemetery in Ironton.

Friends may call after 2 p.m. Monday at Phillips Funeral Home in Ironton.



Billy Mercer (1950-2008)

Billy Junior Mercer, 57, of Lavalette, died Friday in Cabell Huntington Hospital in Huntington.

He was born March 26, 1950, in Salyersville, Ky.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Rowe-Mercer Cemetery in Chesapeake, Ohio.

Friends may call after 11 a.m. Tuesday at Neal Funeral Home in Catlettsburg, Ky.
