Ernest Bernard “Nard” Pergrem (1926-2008)
Ernest Bernard “Nard” Pergrem died Wednesday, March 12, in the Tuscany Hospice House in Summerfield, Fla., where he resided with his wife, Marcia.
He was born Oct. 31, 1926, in Ashland, the son of the late Charles O. and Martha Jones Pergrem.
Nard was preceded in death by his first wife, JoAnn Sorg Pergrem, and his youngest daughter, Dayna Pergrem Foster. After JoAnn’s passing, God again blessed him with another wonderful wife, Marcia “Cookie” Pergrem. He was also preceded in death by a stepson, Steve Richter; two sisters, Etta Mae Conley and Jeane Ward; and two brothers, Virgil and Charles “Buck” Pergrem.
Nard retired from Armco Inc. in 1985 after having worked there for 35 years. He began his career with Armco as a mechanical engineer and advanced through many management positions, retiring as area superintendent in charge of rolling. Nard’s father, Charlie, was credited with having been a founding father and leader in the formation and constitution of United Steel Workers Local 1865, which still services AK Steel.
Nard grew up in the Pollard area and attended Pollard Baptist Church, where he became a Christian as a young boy. It was in the Pollard area that he began playing sports. He was a standout athlete at Ashland High School in both basketball and baseball and set many school records that stood for many years. After he graduated from high school in 1944, he went on to play for Duke University for a short time until he joined the United States Navy. There he served his country during the final days of World War II. Up until his death, he proudly flew the flag of his beloved country. After returning home from the war, he finished his basketball career at Marshall College, playing under Cam Henderson, and received his degree in engineering. Later in life, he became one of the most respected basketball officials in the area, calling not only high school games but advancing to the college rank and calling games for the Ohio Valley Conference. In 2002, he was honored as the Elks Sports Day honoree. He was also very involved in the design and building of the local YMCA.
But Nard’s greatest accomplishment in life was his family. Besides his wife, Cookie, he is also survived by two daughters, Narda Jo Ingram (Smokey) of Ashland and Marla Bornholt (Gary) of Camberrra, Australia; a son, Craig Pergrem (Marla Layne) of Orlando, Fla.; two stepsons, Rick and Mike Richter; and a stepdaughter, Meri Horn. He is also survived by eight grandchildren, Steven Scott Ingram, Susan Danby Ingram Greene of Ashland, Ellen Maree Bornholt and Nicholas Craig Alexander Bornholt of Australia, Joshua Cavin Pergrem and Mallory JoAnn Pergrem of Florida and Alyssia JoAnn Foster and Haley Elizabeth Foster of Connecticut. He is also survived by six stepgrandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two stepgreat-grandchildren. There are two surviving sisters, Gertrude May of Venice, Calif., and Barbara Jo Donithan of Lexington, Ky. He will also be missed by two special in-laws, Bill and Bobbie Sorg of Hinton, W.Va.
There has been a change in the order of the memorial service as was printed in the death notice in Friday’s paper. The memorial service will be at 5:30 p.m. Monday, March 17, at Rose Hill Missionary Baptist Church, with Pastor Charles Stewart conducting the services. A time to pay respects to the family will follow immediately after the service. There will be no graveside services.
