Alan Reid Walters - 1939-2008
Alan Reid Walters, 68, died Monday, March 3, 2008, in Hospice House in Huntington, W.Va.
He was born April 25, 1939, in Ashland.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Cynthia Jane Ball Walters and Dean Emerson Walters; a brother, Dean Emerson Walters Jr.; and a special friend, Opal Croley.
He was a graduate of Ashland High School and Eastern Kentucky State College and he entertained and inspired faculty and students alike at Russell High School.
He will be best remembered as an artist, a teacher and a humorist.
Surviving are three children, Todd Walters and Clay Walters (Tina), both of Berea, and Rebecca Walters of Salt Lake City, Utah; a sister, Joanne Smith of Huntington; two former wives, Carolyn Walters of Fort Myers, Fla., and Barbara Walters Morris of Ashland; a special friend, Ethel Chafin of Huntington; grandchildren Cpl. Jason Piliaris of Camp Lejeune, N.C., and Hamrick, Della and Sunni Walters, all of Berea; a great-grandson, Simba Piliaris of Salt Lake City; and several nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 8, 2008, at Community Presbyterian Church in Bellefonte.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice or the Pendleton Art Center.

Marie Stinnett Brake - 1924-2008
In the presence of her loving and devoted husband of 60 years, Joseph A. Brake, and her four children, Marie Stinnett Brake passed peacefully on March 5, 2008.
She was born in Friendsville, Tenn, in 1924. She graduated from Tennessee Wesleyan College in 1943 and the University of Tennessee in 1946, where she was one of three women to graduate that year in the College of Business Administration. She was the daughter of Charles and Hattie Stinnett and sister to Earl C. Stinnett and Charles Pat Stinnett Jr., all who preceded her in death.
Throughout her later life, Marie said she had enjoyed the best of both worlds. She stayed home and brought up her four children, Rebecca Brake Murray, Patricia E. Brake, Vicki Brake Cantrell and Joseph A. Brake Jr. She was actively involved in her church and community in their hometowns of Kingsport, Tenn., Longview, Texas, Portsmouth, Ohio, and Ashland, Ky, where they made a home for 35 years.
In Ashland, she was a member of First United Methodist Church and more recently a member of Middlesettlements United Methodist Church in Louisville, Tenn., where she and her husband were married in 1947. She served as superintendent of the children’s division of Sunday school at Franklin Avenue United Methodist Church in Portsmouth, as president of the Country Lane Garden Club, the League of Women Voters, the Progressive Mothers Club and the American Association of University Women. She was also active as a Girl Scout and Cub Scout leader.
Marie later earned a master’s degree in business education and she began a second career at the University of Kentucky, Ashland Community College, where she retired at age 70 as an assistant professor. While there, she also served as the handicapped coordinator and the veterans coordinator and she taught several courses, including management and business education. She developed and organized Handicapped Awareness Week in Ashland and was responsible for making the college accessible for the handicapped. Former students and veterans would always return to her office and tell her about their successes. Among many words of wisdom, she encouraged them to graduate and to use good grammar and manners.
In addition to her husband and children, Marie is survived by her sons-in-law, David White Murray III and James Edward Cantrell; her daughter-in-law, Allyson Burton Brake; and her grandchildren, Allison Murray Near and husband Tom, Hannah Howard Reed and husband Josh, David White Murray IV and wife Erin, James Clay Cantrell, Jennifer Patton Howard, Joseph Christopher Cantrell, Rebecca Marie Howard, Katharyn Renee Brake, Sarah Jo Brake, Samantha Faye Jenkins, Jane Allyson Jenkins and Peter Jenkins.
Arrangements are through McCammon-Ammons-Click Funeral Home in Maryville, where visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 7.
Services will be at Middlesettlements United Methodist Church in Louisville, Tenn.,at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 8.
Interment will be in Middlesettlements Cemetery.

Harriet Alexander Martin - 1916-2008
Harriet Alexander Martin, 91, ascended to heaven on March 4, 2008.
Harriet, the daughter of Harry and Carrie Alexander, was born in Ashland, Ky., on June 14, 1916. She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph D. Martin, who died 30 years ago. She now joins him with the Lord.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by three older siblings. She was a loving, nurturing wife and mother who gave of herself selflessly. Harriet was dedicated to giving to others, including many hours spent at Good Samaritan Hospital, God’s Pantry and the Ronald McDonald House. She was a faithful member of Park United Methodist Church since moving to Lexington in 1952. She was a longtime choir member and spent more than 50 years supporting this ministry.
Though we know she is with God, the family deeply grieves the loss of a mother who loved unconditionally. She leaves behind many dear friends and will not be easily forgotten by anyone who knew her.
To cherish her memory, she leaves behind two sons and their wives, Rich and Pat Martin and Joe and Carla Martin; two grandchildren, Molly and Bryan and their spouses; two great-grandchildren, Gracie and Chandler; and many dear friends.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at W.R. Milward Mortuary-Broadway in Lexington.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today and from noon to 1 p.m. Friday at the mortuary.
Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association.

Rose Robinson - 1935-2008
Rose Robinson, 72, of Smith Branch Road, Greenup, Ky., went home to be with the Lord on March 3, 2008, surrounded by her family in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland, Ky., after a courageous battle with cancer.
Mrs. Robinson was born Oct. 2, 1935, in Scioto County, Ohio, a daughter of the late Clarence and Elizabeth Shackleford Robinson. She was a homemaker and member of Pleasant Street Christian Baptist Church in Ironton, Ohio.
She was best known as Mamaw to so many family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 38 years, Harold Robinson on July 23, 2001. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Cathy McMeans; four siblings, Clara Robinson, Dottie Groves, Jane Keplinger and Clarence “Bub” Robinson; and a stepson, Ronald Robinson.
Rose is survived by her son, William “Billy” McMeans of Portsmouth, Ohio; a daughter, Lisa Taylor and her husband, Mark, of Greenup; two granddaughters whom she raised and thought of as daughters, Tera Day and husband Raymond of Harlan, Ky., and Teresa Harr and husband Slade of Orient, Ohio; four grandchildren, Tommy Taylor and wife Angela of Pensacola, Fla., Emily Taylor and fiance Ted Stepp and Faith and Nathaniel Taylor, all of Greenup; stepchildren Lynn Robinson and wife Beth, Sharon Justice and husband Gary and Joann Fairchild, all of Greenup; five sisters, Evelyn Hubbard, Stella Helmick, Ann Cooper, Alice Kegley and Marilyn Johnson; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, March 7, 2008, at Morton Funeral Home in South Shore by Bryan Chaffins. Burial will be in Smith Branch Cemetery in Greenup.
Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today and after 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Raymond Day, Slade Harr, Tommy Taylor, Ted Stepp, Bradley Day and Mike Hubbard.

Argetta Alexander - 1918-2008
Argetta Alexander, 90, of Flat Hollow Road, South Portsmouth, Ky., went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, March 4, 2008, in King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland, Ky.
Mrs. Alexander was born Feb. 14, 1918, in Load, Ky., a daughter of the late David Crockett and Mettie Alice Miller Quillen.
She was retired from Mitchell Lace Co. in Portsmouth, Ohio, and was a member of First Baptist Church of South Shore since 1939, where she was a member of the Sunday school Class of Ruth. She taught Sunday school since 1948.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Frank Alexander; four brothers, Charles Elby Quillen, William “Bill” Quillen, Harley Quillen and Herston Quillen; two sisters, Lorene Barker and Flora Borowski; a grandson, Carl Leroy Brown Jr.; and a son-in-law, William Mayo Forbes.
She is survived by a son, James Kenny (Loretta Waugh) Alexander of South Portsmouth; three daughters, Gloria Jean (Carl Roy) Brown and Betty Forbes, all of South Portsmouth, and Nancy (Gary) Johnson of Wheelersburg, Ohio; two brothers, Joe Quillen of Greenup, Ky., and Wesley Quillen of Troy, Ohio; two sisters, Margaret DeHart of Troy and Helen Reed of York, Ky.; 15 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, March 7, 2008, at First Baptist Church of South Shore by Brother Darrell Stephenson and Pastor A.J. Toney. Burial will be in Mount Zion Cemetery in South Shore.
Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today and after 10 a.m. Friday at the church.

James Litteral - 1927-2008
James Litteral, 79, of Wurtland, husband of Georgia A. Litteral, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday afternoon, March 5, 2008, in Community Hospice Care Center.
James was born June 14, 1927, in Wurtland, the only child of Oscar and Sadie Bates Litteral.
James proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict. He retired after 41 years of service to Armco Steel in the West Processing Department.
He attended Wurtland Nazarene Church and First Baptist Church of Russell.
In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by a son, Edward “Sonny” Litteral; a daughter, Brenda Shuff; and a granddaughter, Safrona Renee Kincaid.
In addition to his wife of 60 years, Georgia Claxon Litteral, he is survived by two sons, Jimmy Litteral and his wife, Anita, of Greenup, Ky., and Mike Litteral and his wife, Sandy, of Wurtland, Ky.; a daughter-in-law, Debra Litteral of Worthington, Ky.; a son-in-law, David Shuff of Worthington, Ky.; five grandchildren, Maria Adams, Shawn Allen Litteral, Jennifer Litteral, Shama Litteral and Jessica Kidd; seven great-grandchildren, Davin Kincaid, Michael Allen Litteral, Zack Litteral, Quinten Litteral, Lakin Smith, Landon Adams and Haley Adams; and numerous friends and extended family.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, March 7, 2008, at First Baptist Church of Russell by the Rev. Ken Gowin. Burial will be in Bellefonte Memorial Gardens.
Friends may call from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at the church.

Asa “Acie” Hall - 1939-2008
Asa “Acie” Hall, 68, of Grayson, Ky., died Tuesday morning, March 4, 2008, in King’s Daughters Medical Center.
Mr. Hall was born April 5, 1939, in Letcher County, Ky., a son of the late Morgan and Grace Belcher Hall.
He was also preceded in death by a brother, David Hall.
He taught for more than 30 years, teaching in Indiana then in Columbus, Ohio, before teaching in the Rock Hill School System, where he coached football and basketball, and retired from the Fairview Independent School District in 2001, where he was active in the athletic department.
After retirement, he enjoyed wintering in Florida. He graduated from Morehead State University with a bachelor of arts degree and was a member of the Eagles basketball team and BPO Elks 350 in Ashland. Acie was a devoted father, spending much of his time following the sports career of his son. In 20 years, he rarely missed a game. He enjoyed camping, hunting, fishing and spending time with his grandkids.
Surviving are a son, Andrew Clark Hall of Ashland; two brothers, Don Hall of St. Paris, Ohio, and Ellis Hall of Centerville, Ohio; a sister, Dorothy Potter of Camden, S.C.; a grandson, Morgan Hall; two granddaughters, Ashlee Hall and Cardyn Hall; and a host of loving family members and friends.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday, March 7, 2008, at Steen Funeral Home-Central Avenue Chapel in Ashland by the Rev. Charles E. Stewart. Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today, March 6, 2008, at the funeral home, where there will be an Elks service at 7 p.m.

Riad Abul-Khoudoud - 1927-2008
Riad Reslan Abul-Khoudoud, 81, of Ashland, died Wednesday in American University Hospital in Beirut, Lebanon.
He was born in January 1927, in Beirut.
His wife, Nujud Abul-Khoudoud, preceded him in death.
He will be buried today in Beirut.

Ernest Everett Young, 84, of Satsuma, Fla., died Monday in Satsuma.
His wife, Mary O. Young, died in 2004.
