Stella Hurt
On Sunday, March 2, Stella P. Hurt, died in Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington, Ky., from complications of a stroke suffered in 2007.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Harmon and Mary R. Presley of Davenport, Va.; siblings Pearl Presley Breeding, Maude Presley Williamson, Flora Presley, Venia Presley Boyd, Reba Presley, Missouri Presley Turner, Corbet Presley, Marshall T. Presley and William Presley; her husband of 49 years, Clovis Hurt; and two of her beloved children, a son, Hollie Hurt, and a daughter, Patricia “Patty” H. Crouch (James Warren).
She graduated from Council High School in Council, Va., as salutatorian, narrowly losing the title of valedictorian to her sister. She went on to Williamson Memorial School of Nursing in Williamson, Va., with additional training at St. Mary’s Hospital in Huntington, W.Va. So committed to the profession and practice of nursing, she declined a full scholarship to medical school offered by a group of physicians convinced she should join their ranks as a doctor.
Over the course of her career, she served as the supervising nurse on the medical, surgical, obstetric, neonatal and pediatric floors. On his return from World War II, she married Clovis Hurt and together they moved to Ashland, Ky. Motivated by her deep compassion for the under-served and isolated families in the five-county area, she worked tirelessly to establish the first satellite health clinics in their communities. After more than 25 years of service in public health, she eventually retired from her position as nursing supervisor of the FIVCO District Health Department. Even in retirement, she remained an active scholar of medical literature and kept herself up to date in that realm until the time of her stroke.
She was a lifelong Christian and a member of Community Presbyterian Church of Bellefonte for the last 27 years. There she was an active member, involved in many ministries and served as an elder for several terms. Because of her husband’s involvement with the Gideons, she likewise served the local Women’s Auxiliary of Gideons International, where she held the offices of both president and vice president in years past.
Stella Hurt is survived and mourned by her loving daughter, Lucy-Bo H. (Davis) Bussey; four grandchildren, Holland Crouch, David Crouch, Stella Bussey (John) Parks and Clovis Whitman Bussey; four great-grandchildren, Holly Catherine Crouch, Zach Crouch, Patricia Katlyn “Katie” Crouch and Hudson Cooper Crouch; a brother, Russell V. Presley of Oakwood, Va.; her cherished niece, Barbara Ann Banks of Frankfort; and a nephew, Jim Bob Williamson of Louisville.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 6, 2008, at Greenup Presbyterian Church, 209 W. Main St., Greenup, Ky., by the Rev. Jack Edwards. Burial will be in Bellefonte Memorial Gardens.
