Freshman AIT belongs to Ashland

ASHLAND — The Freshman AIT crown is back in the hands of the tournament host.

Ashland took the 33rd annual Freshman AIT championship with a 51-36 defeat of Rowan County on Saturday afternoon.

Damantie Thornton led Ashland in scoring with 16 points. Jaxson Pruitt had 13 points and Christian Villers 10.

Rowan County hit seven 3-pointers compared to Ashland’s one, but the Vikings managed just 12 points inside the arc. They visited the free-throw line just eight times and sank three attempts.

Under first-year coach Jason Strader, Ashland’s freshmen finished the season at 15-1. The Tomcats’ only loss came against Rowan County, which they played a total of three times including Saturday’s matchup.

The champions will be recognized on Tuesday night when Ashland’s varsity team hosts West Carter.

Huntington beat Raceland, 44-39, in the third-place game on Saturday morning.
