Prep Basketball Roundup: Quick start boosts Rowan past Russell

RUSSELL — Rowan County rushed out to a 20-2 advantage and, while Russell was able to cut the margin to 28-20, the Vikings stayed in control.

Rowan County beat the Red Devils, 76-55, in the opening round of the Eastern Kentucky Conference Tournament on Saturday at Russell High School.

Ryne Callahan notched a game-high 19 points to lead the Vikings (2-1).

Hayden Pratt added 17 points and Larry Whelan 15.

The inexperienced Red Devils (0-2) were led in scoring by Ethan Raby, with 18 points on six 3-pointers, and Zach Tackett, who had 15 points.

LLOYD Sydney Webb poured in four of her overall six 3-pointers in the first quarter alone, helping Greenup County jump out to a 27-10 lead.

The Lady Musketeers downed Morgan County in the first round of the EKC Tournament.

Webb scored 20 points, while Micah Leslie added 16.

Cheyenna Ferguson led Morgan County (0-2) with 17 points. Amber Cole had 15.

Greenup County (2-0) takes on East Carter in the EKC semifinals on Monday at 6 p.m. at Rowan County Senior High School.

Logan Nickell tossed in 23 points for the Lions, who improved to 2-0. Nickell accounted for three of Elliott County’s four 3-pointers. Hunter Holbrook and freshman Chase Porter each chipped in 10 points.

For East Carter (0-2), Donald Damron scored 17, Cole Brammer 16 and Connor Greene 11. Brammer made four 3-pointers.

OLIVE HILL Chesapeake outscored West Carter 14-11 in overtime to come away with the victory.

Sydnee Hall scored eight of her game-high 21 points in the extra period for the Lady Panthers, who got 16 points from Jordan Porter.

West Carter’s Lexie Berry hit a 3-pointer late in the fourth quarter to get her team to overtime. Berry led the Lady Comets (0-2) with 16 points, followed by Brooke Adkins (13) and Morgan Berry (12).
