Russell’s boys and Boyd County’s girls both experienced the joy of winning the Class 2A, Region 6 team titles this past cross country season.
For the individuals involved, personal accolades have been added bonuses.
A pair from each squad earned All-State honors, which were announced on Wednesday.
Russell seniors Jacob Heyerly and Josh Riley were All-State selections after helping boost the Red Devils to a fourth-place finish at the state championships. Riley paced Russell in several races, while Heyerly battled through injuries and sickness to another stellar season.
Riley achieved his personal record of 16:44 early in the season at Mason County.
The duo placed 16th (Riley) and 22nd (Heyerly) at State.
Boyd County teammates Steele and Gibson finished second and third, respectively, in the region meet at George Rogers Clark’s course in early November. They finished 23rd and 19th, respectively, at the state meet in Lexington.
Other northeastern Kentucky All-State selections were Shelley DeHarte (Rowan County, Class 2A boys), Olivia Leet (Fleming County, Class 2A girls) and Kailee Perry (Morgan County, Class A).
