PREP ROUNDUP: Boyd softball opens with 2-1 weekend

MOREHEAD — Boyd County opened its softball season by going 2-1 at Rowan County’s tournament over the weekend, culminating with an 8-2 victory against Menifee County on Saturday.

Brianna Crooks went 3-for-4 with two runs batted in and two runs scored, Kenzi Martin was 2-for-3 with three RBI and a home run, and Taylor Wheeler was 2-for-4 with two runs. Destiny Goins went 2-for-4 and drove in two.

Hannah Irvine was the Lady Lions’ pitcher of record, fanning five Lady Cats. Erika Brewer took the loss for Menifee County (2-3).

MOREHEAD The Lady Vikings opened their showcase Friday night when Courtnae Bolander’s eighth-inning RBI single plated Alli Banks for a walk-off win.

Banks, who went 2-for-4, drove in the game-tying run before Bolander scored her.

Kenzi Martin was 2-for-3 with a triple and two runs scored.

Morgan Mitchell got the win for Rowan County (6-2). Hannah Irvine took the loss for Boyd County, whose pitching staff issued seven walks and hit a batter.

MOREHEAD The Lady Lions run-ruled the Lady Redhounds in four innings Friday night as Lora Thompson twirled a two-hitter with seven punchouts and zero walks.

Destiny Goins went 3-for-4 with a double and drove in four runs, Taylor Wheeler was 3-for-4 with four runs scored, two RBI and a double, and Houston Reeves was 2-for-3 with a triple and two runs. Kenzi Martin went 2-for-4 and drove in two.

Hannah Hart took the decision for Corbin (1-4).
