Webb leads region effort

BOWLING GREEN — Ashland senior Haley Webb, playing in the State Tournament for the third consecutive year, carded a 92 Tuesday on a wind-swept, soggy Bowling Green Country Club Golf Course to lead Region 11 entries during the first day of the KHSAA Girls' Golf Tournament.

Greenup County senior Ashley Veach totaled a 96, while Boyd County sixth-grader McKinzie Walters scored a 100 to claim the third-lowest score in the region. Ashland senior Alicia Gunter shot the best round of her high school career with a 104.

Ashland, runner-up in the region, shot 409 as a team. Regional winner Greenup County finished at 424.

“It was a very difficult day to play golf,” Ashland Coach Larry Bailey said. “I am really proud of the way our girls didn’t get down and played hard right through the final hole.”

Potential dangerous weather had forced Monday's practice round to be cut short. Rain pounded the area from late Sunday night to early Tuesday morning.

First-round play was suspended due to darkness, although all players had finished at least 16 holes.

Competition is scheduled to resume this morning at 7.

Calloway County’s Anna Hack posted a 4-under par 68 to grab the individual lead among finishers.

Other Region 11 girls' scores included: (Ashland) Jaycie Clark, 106; Jordan Meade, 107; and Taylor Clark, 109; (Greenup County) Katie Gillum, 106; Megan Mulkey, 109; Madison Crump, 113; Samantha Garvin, 122; (Boyd County) Tori Sager, 107; (Fairview) Amber Greene, 121; (Montgomery County) Janie Wise, 121.

The boys’ portion of the tournament is later this week with much better weather forecast.
