Big-inning Dawgs

Lawrence County scores four in sixth to get past Greenup County

For The Independent

LOUISA —  It looked for a while that a questionable call may have determined the outcome of the game, but in the end, it was just an afterthought.

First-baseman Josh Cantrell cleared the bases on a bases-loaded single Friday night to cushion what was a tight game and lead Lawrence County to a 6-2 win over Greenup County at Randy Keeton Field.

“We let an opportunity slip by us,” said Greenup County coach Greg Logan. “It really came down to one play, and that took the wind out of our sails.”

Logan’s frustrations were evident.  In the bottom of the fifth inning, Greenup County catcher Zach Hutchinson was called for catcher’s interference against Lawrence County’s Ryan Kingsmore, marking the second interference call with Kingsmore at the plate.

This time, Kingsmore went to first on a fielder’s choice, scoring Noah Lambert.  Logan said the interference was called at the plate.

“A call doesn’t determine the outcome of the game, but in this case, it did change the momentum,” Logan added.

Lambert’s run tied the game at 1-apiece. Four batters later, Clark Rice’s single scored Zack Keesee to make it 2-1.

Greenup County (20-12) knotted the score at 2-all in the top of the sixth when first-baseman J.B. Brown scored Gage Hughes on a single.

Lawrence County (22-10) answered in a big way in the home half of the sixth, notching three consecutive hits to set up Cantrell’s bases-clearing single.

Brandon Stevens got the win for the Bulldogs.

Tristan Downing took the loss for the Musketeers, who left the bases loaded in the top of the seventh to end the game.

Lawrence County (21-11) begins 57th District Tournament play on Tuesday at Johnson Central High School against Paintsville. Game time is at 8 p.m.

Greenup County (20-12) opens 63rd District play Monday at Russell against Raceland. Game time is 5 p.m.
