East volleyball upends Fairview

GRAYSON — The East Carter volleyball team did not want to play a fifth game against Fairview.

The Lady Raiders used a strong attack in the fourth game to finish off the Lady Eagles, 3-1 (25-18, 25-18, 22-25, 25-10), on Monday night in Grayson.

East Carter (10-6) is coming off of winning the Citizen’s Bank Classic in Bath County. It was not used to the pace Fairview was playing and coach Cathy Harris said that took her team out of their rhythm.

“After you have a good win sometime it’s hard to play slow,” Harris said. “They play better when a team plays faster. … We play to our competition and that can’t happen every game.”

East jumped out to a 10-2 lead on Fairview (8-7) in the first game but battled back after several serves bounced the way of the Lady Eagles. But behind the attack of hitters Cheyenne Boggs, Whitney Gollihue and Chloe Riggs, the Lady Raiders kept Fairview at bay.

“Their hitters are killer at the net,” Fairview coach Lauren Ellis said. “My girls had a hard time controlling them. We’d get an arm on it but it wasn’t anything we were controlling well.”

The second game was very similar to the first. East took a commanding lead only to let Fairview come back within six points before the Lady Raiders took the second game.

Fairview wouldn’t back down in the third, rallying from 14-12 to win a hard-fought game 25-22. That is when Harris challenged her team to put the match away.

“They got very complacent (in the third set),” Harris said. “We have to stop doing that if we want to keep competing with the top teams in the region.”

After several kills by East’s hitters, they used a 14-5 run to finish off Fairview 25-10.

“We made some uncharacteristic errors,” Ellis said. “We just fell short and we had seven errors in one set and you’re not going to win many games doing that.”

East Carter has eight victories in its last 11 matches.

For obvious reasons, pole vaulting records and windy conditions don’t go together.

Despite a windy challenge — especially for Messer — on the hilltop at Ashland Athletic Complex, both athletes set new pole vault marks for the 11-year-old meet and received Outstanding Performance awards.
