PREP ROUNDUP: Whitt big fly boosts Kittens over Central

PAINTSVILLE — Sydney Whitt poked a home run over the left-center field fence to lift Ashland to a 6-5 victory over Johnson Central on Friday night at Johnson Central High School.

With the game tied 5-5, Whitt led off the top of the seventh with a solo shot. She also had a triple.

In the bottom of the seventh, Johnson Central loaded the bases with one out. Ashland pitcher Megan Hensley induced a double-play groundout as she fielded the ball and fired it home to catcher Sydney Campbell for a forceout before Campbell whipped it to first for the final out.

Katie Baldock, McKenzie Vanover and Katie Caron each went 2-for-4 as Ashland racked up 12 hits.

The Kittens (16-7) held the Lady Eagles scoreless until Johnson Central plated five in the fifth.

Ashland pitcher Megan Hensley, having given up just one run over the past three games heading into Thursday, struck out eight Lady Eagles. Lauren Delong led Johnson Central offensively with a 3-for-4 night.

Johnson Central, which had wins over 16th Region teams Russell and Boyd County earlier in the week, fell to 15-7 on the season.

Ashland heads to West Carter on Thursday.
