Little League All-Star season is well under way, and one champion has already been crowned.
Ashland American turned back South Shore in the District 6 9- and 10-year-old softball championship in Flemingsburg on Saturday to punch a ticket to the state tournament in Owensboro.
That’s just the first of many upcoming tournaments all over the area throughout the next two weeks.
The District 6 11-12 softball tournament holds a possible championship game tonight at 5:30 at Stan Spence Field 1 in South Shore. The South Shore All-Stars take on either Fleming County or Raceland-Worthington. If South Shore wins, it advances on to the state tournament.
Play in District 6 Area 1 9-10 baseball begins on Friday at 5 p.m. in Flemingsburg. The championship game is set for Tuesday, July 1, with a possible rematch on July 2. Teams include Grayson, Lewis County, Fleming County and Morehead.
Junior League baseball opens up on Friday at 5:30 p.m. at Lewis County. A champion will be crowned on either July 1 or July 2. Teams involved are Boyd County National, Lewis County, Greenup County and Ashland National.
Morehead Youth will host the District 6 Area 1 11-12 All-Stars. First pitch is set for Friday at 5 p.m. Olive Hill, Lewis County, Morehead and Grayson are in the field.
District 6 10-11 baseball will be held at Russell-Flatwoods starting Friday at 5 p.m. The bracket consists of Morehead, Ashland American, Ashland National, Fleming County, Catlettsburg and Russell-Flatwoods. A champion could be determined on either July 3 or July 5.
Boyd County National is the site of the District 6 Area 2 9-10 All-Star baseball games. Opening night is Friday at 5. The tournament will conclude on either July 3 or 5. Boyd County National, South Shore, Ashland American, Ashland National, Russell-Flatwoods and Catlettsburg comprise the field.
Beginning action on Friday at 5 p.m. and closing on either July 3 or July 5 are the District 6 Area 2 11-12 baseball All-Stars. Catlettsburg, Russell-Flatwoods, South Shore, Boyd County National, Ashland American and Ashland National will do battle at Ashland National’s fields.

Practice rolls on as kickoff approaches in less than 5 weeks
As high school football teams strap on helmets and prepare for Friday nights next month, the theme of the first couple of weeks of practice for most is simple.
You gotta work. Hard.
And if you don’t, it’ll be exposed come Aug. 22.
“Everybody looks good in helmets,” Ashland coach Tony Love said with a grin. “We’re all undefeated. There’s a lot of work to get done.
“Our coaches and kids, we all know it, and that’s why they’re here and we’re here, and we’re gonna push hard every day.”
