Region soccer finals at Boyd

ASHLAND — Both the 16th Region girls and boys soccer tournaments wrap up with championship games tonight at Boyd County High School.

To avoid having Boyd County and Ashland boys teams travel to Fleming County for their matchup, athletic directors have agreed to move the location to Cannonsburg.

The girls play at 6 and boys will follow.

On the boys side, Ashland (14-8-2) and Boyd County (9-7-2) split their previous two meetings this season. The Tomcats won, 4-1, on Sept. 10. The Lions won, 2-1, on Oct. 16 for the 63rd District title.

Sponsored by The Independent, live updates will be aired on wlgcradio.com throughout the evening of the boys’ game. Just visit the website and click the “Listen Here” button.

The boys’ winner will host the 13th Region champion in Semi-State action on Monday.

Vying for the girls’ title are Russell (16-5-1) and Ashland (9-12-2) at Boyd County High School.

Each is coming off hard-fought 2-1 victories — Russell over East Carter, Ashland over Rowan County — in the semifinals.

Including Russell’s 4-0 defeat of Ashland last week in the 63rd District championship, the Lady Devils are 3-0 against the LadyCats.

The girls’ winner will host the 13th Region champion in the Semi-State round on Tuesday.
