Greenup County revives holiday basketball event

LLOYD — The Greenup County boys basketball program is set to revive a holiday tournament as it had several years ago.

Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital presented the school with a $1,500 check on Monday afternoon to solidify its gold sponsorship and secure naming rights for the tournament.

The Our Lady of Bellefonte Holiday Classic is scheduled for Dec. 26-28 and will have an eight-team field. Those already committed are Woodford County, Richmond Model, Hancock County, East Carter, Fairview, Elliott County and host Greenup County.

Musketeers coach Harold Tackett said he is talking to a few schools to fill that final spot.

Tackett expressed thanks to OLBH. "They jumped on board real quick," he said.

The three-day event will give more exposure to large gymnasium known as The Green House.

"We want to showcase the facility," Tackett said. "We're talking three days and four- to 6,000 people walking through the gym."

Tackett said Greenbo Lake has already agreed to help with the lodging of out-of-area teams.

"We want to do it first-class so that people will come back," Tackett said.

The coach said the tournament is still searching for sponsors.

The different ways to sponsor include a sponsorship board for $50, a bronze sponsorship for $500, a silver for $1,000 and a gold for $1,500.

Contact the school for details.

As high school football teams strap on helmets and prepare for Friday nights next month, the theme of the first couple of weeks of practice for most is simple.
    You gotta work. Hard.

“Our coaches and kids, we all know it, and that’s why they’re here and we’re here, and we’re gonna push hard every day.”
