MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. —

Megan Hensley was as close to perfect as you can get, but mistakes cost the Kittens in the end.

Hensley threw a no hitter on Friday against South Range, Ohio, but the Kittens still fell 2-1.

The game was the second of an early doubleheader for Ashland at the Grand Strand Softball Classic.

With it being part of a tournamnet schedule, the game had a time limit of 70 minutes and was scheduled to go just five innings. But in the end it went through the normal seven innings.

The last two innings, though, were played under international rule — a runner was placed on second at the start of a team’s at-bat.

Hensley walked the first batter of the game, then followed it up with 15 strikeouts. But the sophomore had to overcome five Kittens’ errors.

In the seventh inning, with the runner on second, South Ridge sacrificed the runner to third. After another Hensley strikeout for the second out, South Ridge picked up the win on a passed ball.

Ashland’s one run came in the fourth inning off a Hensley single that plated Katie Baldock, who had the Kittens’ other hit.

In the first game of the doubleheader, Ashland defeated Jeffersonown 13-2 in five innings.

The Kittens outhit Jeffersontown 13-5 and exploded for six runs in the third inning.

Hayley Kilburn went 2-for-2 with two RBIs, two runs scored and a double for the Kittens and McKenzie Vanover went 2-for-4 with three RBIs.

Baldock went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and Hensley went 2-for-4 while scoring twice and had a triple.

Jordan Meade and Carly Conley added doubles for Ashland, while Sydney Cullop and Kory Nichols each had a triple.

Ashland finished 4-2 at the Grand Strand Softball Classic and improved its overall record to 6-4.

The Kittens next game is on Monday when it hosts Ironton.
