Track season looks for smoother sailing

Greenup County Invitational begins busy stretch

ASHLAND — Keeping up with revisions to the area high school track schedule has required about as much energy as running the 3,200 meters.

And not just because of prolonged cold and inclement weather, which forced several early season cancellations.

Russell High School’s track, annually one of the main venues for area competition, is out of commission as far as hosting meets due to cracking and warping of five lanes on the south section.

RHS did find help in salvaging its annual Red Devil Relays. The meet will take place at Ashland’s Rex Miller Track on May 2.

Also, no large-scale high school meets are scheduled at Boyd County. BCHS decided not to hold its traditional Boyd County Classic, although athletic director David Trimble said the school will look into perhaps bringing it back in the future.

Boyd County was an option to replace Russell as regional host, but that plan did not work out.

Currently, the Class AA and A regional meets are scheduled for Rowan County. Originally, the Morehead school thought it would be unable to host meets this spring due to plans to resurface the football field inside the track, but that project was put on hold.

Rowan County will also have the Eastern Kentucky Conference Meet on April 12.

Greenup County hosts an invitational tonight as well as the Meet of Champions next Tuesday.

Upcoming meets at Ashland include: Ernie Chattin Memorial (April 20); Boyd-Russell-Ashland-Greenup Meet (April 30); Red Devil Relays; and Area 7 Championships (May 4).

According to last week’s KYtrackXC.com rankings, Rowan County’s boys are No. 3 in Class 2A, while Fairview’s girls rank sixth in Class A.

Fairview’s Paige McKnight has the top performances in the Class A 100-meter hurdles and 300-meter hurdles, while teammate Morgan McIntyre is No. 1 in the pole vault. Rowan County’s Laney Stone leads the way in the Class 2A high jump. Several other area athletes are ranked in the top 10 in their events.
