Lewis County’s Frye headed to Rio Grande

VANCEBURG — Lewis County senior basketball player Taylor Frye has signed a letter of intent to attend the University of Rio Grande this fall.

Frye signed on with the RedStorm on Monday, March 4, in the Lewis County High School library.

The shooting guard helped the Lady Lions to 16th Region Tournament semifinal appearances in back-to-back seasons. She racked up more than 1,300 career points.

Frye’s statistics as a senior include 12.5 points per game, a 39.5 field-goal percentage, a 77.8 free-throw percentage and a 29.9 3-point field-goal percentage.

Frye is also a catcher for the softball Lady Lions and quite a good student, according to basketball coach Jay Fite. Fite told the Maysville Ledger-Independent that Frye maintained a 3.9 grade-point average.

“She has been huge in our success and she’s a great example to other young people by showing hard work and dedication pays off,” Fite told the newspaper.

Frye will join fellow 16th Region player, Ashland’s Kaylyn Gambill, at Rio Grande.

Rio Grande struggled through this past season, going 8-22, under 21st-year coach David Smalley. The NAIA Division I school competes in the Mid-South Conference.

Frye said she plans to study respiratory therapy.
