Russell-Flatwoods Softball 1-0 in pool play

AKRON, Ohio — Russell-Flatwoods Junior League Softball All-Stars shot out to a nice start in pool play of the Central Region Tournament on Saturday.

They defeated Missouri, 15-5, in six innings behind a 14-hit effort.

Offense has been solid dating back to the state tournament.

“We’ve really been knocking the ball around well,” said coach Rod Hieneman.

Sara Hieneman gave up no hits over three innings, while Lexie Hester pitched well in relief to help Russell keep a cushion after it jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first inning.

Hieneman was 3-for-3 at the plate, reaching base in all five appearances.

Catie Gullett contributed three hits of her own, while also scoring three runs, as 11 total Russell All-Stars tallied at least one hit.

Russell faces the host team from Akron today at 10:30 as pool play continues.
